We are a 50 and 60 something couple, so not exactly in our prime anymore! Although we have previously been canoeing, this was a superb, leisurly day ona beautiful stretch of river.
The canoe is booked according to the distance you intend to cover, we chose a double canoe from Cenac to Beynac - about 13km. There is no time limit, you can just let the current take you and spend all day if you want, as the company pick up every hour until 9pm at your end location.
As a guide it took us 3 hours but we took a picnic and stopped for a while en route.
The canoes are of a good standard and they provide a large waterproof container for cameras, picnics etc. My only gripe is that there is no backrest provided and our backs did ache a little after a while. To be fair, It is normal NOT to have a backrest but we did notice another compant that did provide canoes with backrests so if you have a back problem it may be worth shopping around.
Don't hesitate, it's a great day out - rated as the best day of our trip, and a great way to see some of the lovely riverside villages.

Thank you for your great review. Pick up is every hour until 7pm from Beynac so you have enough time to drift downstream. Glad you enjoyed your canoe trip.

This review is for a trip I did in 2010 I have been trying to get back ever since ...it was that good

Without ruining next years trip by you all reading this and booking all the canoes up next year before we get back there....These guy's are nice people and they run the best canoe hire and planned trip on the river.

I can tell you that this is the best Day's holiday I have had for Many years. So much so that I cannot wait to get back and do it again.

My Wife and I had a double open and the two kids (aged 24 and 27!) had a kayak each!
Yeap! It was one of those grown up lets take the kids out days that don't happen that often because they have all grown up and left home...
Anyway we/I decided to do the full day trip that these guy's hire the boats out for about a 30K trip...I suggest you get there early about 9am and catch the bus/van up river about 10/15k.. for a 10Am start. at Calviac. Choose a bright sunny Day and a river that is nice and docile and you have the setting for a perfect day (do choose your day)

Gentlemen (advice to the wise) you get in the canoe first and hold it steady on the paddle for your lady! I did it the wrong way round and ended up with a rant as it grounded straight away against a rock because she could not hold it herself, trust me guys.... do this or pay the penalty of a slightly miffed wife all day as you ask why she could not paddle properly (big mistake!) Leave the Kids to get in and get wet by themselves...
Any how
The price for the day for all three canoes was about 100eur (not that expensive for a whole day) a three canoes. Prepare a picnic and some wine and paddle downstream moderately stopping for rests and the scenery. You do not need to do a hard paddle because the river flows at about 5K per hour anyhow. However try and have aiming points so you can pace yourself down the river. I aimed to be halfway (Cenac) by about 12:30-1Pm.. ish,

You do need to take sun cream and plenty of water..

However there are plenty of stops en-route where you can top up on fluids.

Notable good ones are...Roque Gageac? (it has a good patisserie for coffee and cakes (I had to buy something as a penance!) and then towards the end at Beynac If you can pace yourself to make it at about 3PM there is time to have a late afternoon light lunch.
Do not over do the lunch though as you still have to get back in and have 2K to do to arrive at the pick up point at 5PM. where there is also a café..

Words of warning or shall I say advice......
Put your phone in a water proof made for it floating case. You could loose it and the fish haven't learnt how to send in their photos yet to you've been framed! The river in places can be shallow and you can catch a rock unexpectedly. So keep your eyes peeled and avoid them or be prepared for a ducking with your kit..

Wear clothes your happy to get wet in. If you don't capsize the kids will splash you any how.

Do not wear anything expensive like watches, rings or necklaces. if you loose them overboard you will never get them back. And they can also catch on stuff and prevent your mastery of the paddle...which just does not do..... if your British..

Take just enough money for your meal and food in a waterproof carrier travel light and don't get cumbersome!.

In essence travel light or have just one day bag for you all with a floatation bottle inside it in case you drop it over board. Having said that you can hire a big cask for stuffing your stuff in. But you do not really need it unless you are taking a DSLR or similar item and need to keep them dry.

you will really enjoy this trip

Well done MO and the boys

We stumbled upon this canoe/kayak company while looking for another. Their location was a perfect one to start a 2 hour trip on the Dordogne River. The fellow spoke English and was very clear with his instructions about what to see on the river, safety points and the take out point. And the timing was perfect.

We saw several chateaus and castles from the river, along with the beautiful town of La Roque Gageac. The river was high at this time of year because it is level controlled so the paddling was easy. We chose 2 single kayaks which made it easy to take pictures.

We stopped for a picnic in the sunshine along the way. A very enjoyable way to see the area.
