Staying in this restored 14th century château is a real treat! The rooms are well furnished and decorated with treasures collected from Burgundy's flea markets, and are clean and comfortable with their own private bathrooms.
Hosts Nicole and Pierre are treasures themselves – they open their home and lives to their guests, inviting them to participate in whatever they're doing: I've picked raspberries, went hunting for dinosaur prints and fossils, rolled 110 pizza bases for the village's pizza day (a great opportunity to meet the other's from the village), tasted wine at the local vineyard when Pierre went to stock up, visited numerous local markets for food, and flea markets too. Nicole and Pierre are full of ideas on things to do (for adults and kids alike) and will help out and take you there whenever they can.
The village of Balleure is situated just of the A6 road, close to Tournus, so its a well positioned base to visit the region easily by car, and its train too. I had day trips to Lyon, Chalon-sur-Saone, Brancion, Macon, Cluny and visited other local villages such as Chapaize and Cormatin, often with Nicole and Pierre. Its the kind of village where everyone has a veggie garden and pots of geraniums at the front door, the houses are all old but beautifully restored, and everyone waves and says 'bonjour' even if they don't know you!
Nicole's cooking is delicious! There are some good restaurants nearby, but with home-cooked meals like this available on site, there's no better! If you want to taste something particular, just tell Nicole and if its in season, she'll cook it for you. Breakfast is included, though for those used to a big hearty breakie, you may want to supplement it – its a simple French style petit dejeuner of toast/brioche and coffee.
Staying at Château de Balleure is also a great way to learn French – Nicole is a retired French teacher so she'll have you chatting with the locals in no time!
I spent 4 weeks in May/June at the château and have made some truly great friends and lots of fabulous memories. Château de Balleure is more than just a B&B and staying here has made my French holiday a true French experience.
