I was driving along to go to a castle when I saw a sign for mushroom caves, decided to go & check it out. The drive to it is pretty & my timing was perfect. The next tour was in 20 minutes.
The tour guide was very friendly & full of information. The tour was in French & not sure if they have tours in English but I speak French so it was okay for me.
They tell you about the different types of mushrooms & how they grown, you also get to pick a mushroom & eat it.
The carved village is pretty amazing to think that it is all done by hand.
This is the same mushroom caves that The Amazing Race went to a couple of years ago, so that ended some fun to the whole thing.
Everyone was very friendly, including the people at the store.
I definitely think it was worth a short detour from my destination.

We wanted to visit, we said over the phone, but she said they were full - no places available for a tour that day. We then said there were 20 in our party. Oh, OK, we could come, but we couldn't just see the underground village (for 7.50 Euros), we had to accept the mushroom tour, too (for a total of 10 Euros).

My wife and I had visited once before, a long time ago, and were similarly treated, eventually not taking a tour. She is brusque to the point of rudeness, seemingly only interested in how much we will buy and timing the tours to her convenience. And the first time, there was no one there but us. Now, it is only worth a tour if she can make a lot of money.

Twice so badly treated, why ever think about visiting, again?

Two visits are combined but you don't have to do both. First you do the mushroom visit where you find out (in french) how mushrooms grow. These are top quality mushrooms which are sold to restaurants. The second visit, further along the caves, is a real work of art. Christian Lhermite has been sculpturing facades of town buildings into the soft white rock since 1999 (only works in winter). The detail is incredible. This stone is what was used to build the surrounding castles which hardens as it dries out once above ground, Unfortunately acid rain is slowly destroying the castle stone hence why Lhermite is leaving such a legacy for future generations in this underground wonderland.

Impressive quarry cave, with long tunnels, filled with mushroom growing blocks. I am sure the tour would have been much better if we spoke French, or if they offered an English speaking guide.
