Madame lacks quite a lot in terms of customer service when she greets you (carrying a shopping bag, so you think she's a guest) by simply demanding "can I help you?"...but don't let this put you off. The rooms are nice enough (not our style of decor in an attempt to replicate, presumably, the early days of the hostellerie in 1904). The setting is calm. I had booked the day before and mentioned my dietary needs, which were never mentioned or dealt with-however I probably could have asked if I had been really bothered. It was a bit off-putting to be asked to order our meal before 7 by ringing down, but get over that idiosincracy and make a choice (you would hardly dare not when madame had told you you should. The waitress was wonderful, friendly and helpful and monsieur arrived to sort out drinks, after a slightly frosty start he warmed when we ordered the local wine (coteaux de chalosse). He discussed the four wines from the area with us and was charming. The food was on the good side of adequate and the fig sorbet was totally delicious (the melon wasn't half bad either)-apparently they are bringing out a liquorice version soon which we are assured is a real delight. The setting was calm and as all the other guests were French there was no noise after dinner as they were respectful when opening and closing doors. Breakfast was adequate if lacking choice (no choice of juice or whether you wanted a yoghurt or kiwi-madame just plocked them on the table in front of you regardless). Madame was positively glacial in the morning-even by her own standards and monsieur seemed to have been infected by her (or maybe he's just scared to be too friendly in the morning under her sullen gaze). Slightly pricey for what's on offer but worth it for the peace and tranquility. Pleasant bonus is a small local producers' market in the car park opposite on a Saturday morning in summer, with fruit and vegetables, bread and cakes, honey and wine.
