Stayed here to break up a trip back from a friends wedding in Sheffield. Could not have been more welcoming felt at home immediately. Steven, his partner, and his chef were lovely. There was only a skeleton staff on as not many rooms were booked being a Sunday. We were shown around and to our room everywhere was spotless. The whole place is being refurbished. What they have done so far is excellent. We were told all the refurbishment should be finished by the end of august. Nothing was too much trouble at all. Went down to the new bar for a pre dinner drink great selection :) comfortable seating, everyone was so friendly. Some of the locals arrived for drinks as the evening went on and it turned out quite a fun evening although Steven was rushed off his feet as more people turned up on spec to sample the food which was excellent. Menu had a good selection and nothing was too much trouble for the chef. We are definitely going to return and bring friends with us cant recommend this place enough. Thank you for a great stay :)

Room Tip: All the rooms we viewed were spacious en suit bathrooms were large as well. Room 2 is above the bar...

My girlfriend and I were looking for somewhere to stay just like this for our anniversary. We were in Birmingham for the day and it had taken us less than an hour to drive from Birmingham city centre to Kirkby House. When we got there, we were greeted by Steven who couldn't have been better! He was very welcoming and made us feel at home.

Initially we had booked a standard double en-suite, but it was only an extra £15 to upgrade to the master suite, so we chose to upgrade. The room was very quiet and peaceful; I haven't slept that well in ages! The bathroom was huge and included his and hers sinks, with the jacuzzi bath/shower taking centre stage. Our only concern was that once we had turned the jacuzzi on it did smell a bit like a drain. We failed to mention this to Steven as we didn't want to put negativity on what was a brilliant stay.

We decided to have dinner there rather than going out; party because there isn't much choice in and around Kirkby Mallory for food, but mainly because the menu was very tempting. There was a lot of choice on the menu and at £10 a head we felt it was reasonable value for money, especially considering it's all home made. I had the cottage pie and my girlfriend had the lasagne. We only waited about 30 minutes for our food; we could smell them cooking and it all came out piping hot. They both tasted really nice, unfortunately we couldn't finish due to being full up, which means we didn't get a chance to try any of the deserts, which again, all looked very tempting!

The main door for the building gets locked at 11pm; however you do get given a key which gives you access to a 24 hour side door. The car park gate was left open meaning that should you wish to use your car, you could at any time.

When we came down in the morning, we sat down with the other guests (all of which spoke to us throughout the duration of our stay) whilst we were waiting to be served. The whole place just has a homely feel to it .We also decided to have breakfast; opting for the cooked breakfast option which also gives you access to a breakfast bar including teas, coffees, etc. Personally, I loved the breakfast and thought it was perfectly cooked; it wasn't all to my girlfriend's taste, but that means there was more for me to enjoy!

The only negatives that we could find with our stay, was as previously mentioned the unpleasant smell from the bath once we'd turned the jets on, as well as the shower not being overly powerful. The carpet also looked quite worn with a few stains that hadn't quite come out. The carpet at the top of the stairs from the side door was ripped, also; however Kirkby House is currently undergoing a refurbishment, so that may be changed at a later date. Furthermore it would have been nice to sit near the bar, but due to refurbishment we weren't able too.

We would definitely recommend Kirkby house, especially if you're a couple looking to get away for the night. Although it is in a very quite little town, you can be back on majour roads within an hour, which is really convenient. We will certainly be returning next year, if not before!

Once again, I'd just like to say how good Steven is; he is a really asset to Kirkby House and it wouldn't be the same without him there.

Room Tip: Go for the jacuzzi room. It's worth what we paid for it, anyway !

We stayed here for business for couple weeks in May 2012. I can imagine it has not changed and see no reason for it. Secure parking in the enclosed courtyard.
It is in the middle of nowhere which was near the manufacturing facility we were working, but it also meant we were conveniently located for travel to sights not seen by many. The rooms were not lavish, but if you can stay in the "honeymoon suite" you should. No extra charge for it. It has a big whirlpool tub and shower and nicer beds, workspace and larger room. Clean furnishings, but being from the states, a word came to mind for most of its components. Hinky. Different, not quite right, skeptical. From the outlets to the hot water device for the shower.
They have dinner service, a tv room with bar, and the staff is really nice.
As with most of the English, ice in your drink is not normal, and you have to ask for it. Then they give you just one, sometimes 2 cubes.
All in all, a nice safe place to stay in the English countryside.

Room Tip: Honeymoon, or they might have called it the "couples room".

We booked most of the rooms at Kirkby House for a weekend, group gathering of friends from across the UK. We were made very welcome and the dining room was rearranged so that we could all sit on one large table for all our meals. The food was always good, with a nice menu choice, and good wine selection. House wines by the glass or bottles if you wanted something a bit more special.

There are lots of changes under way at the building, but everything was clean and well sorted for our visit so that we were not inconvenienced at all. It should be really great when the changes are finished, too.
We had the largest room, with a the biggest bathroom I've ever seen. It was all very comfortable and clean.
We didn't realise before arriving that the two ground floor rooms (for ease of access), do not have direct access to the main building, but these are only a few yards from the reception door, so not a great problem.
A couple of times - during the day - it was hard to find anyone if we needed something, but I expect this will be better when the building changes are all completed.

Must mention that the Chef is an authority on local history and is very informative, which was a bonus for our group. As we have a history interest in our group, we were gobsmacked to learn that Kirkby House stands on the route taken by Richard III to his final battle, and the one where his corpse was carried back to Leicester. Just along the road, about 200 yards away, there is the church where King Richard had mass on the way to his demise. This information needs adding to the main website as I'm sure, with the recent discovery of the remains of King Richard III in Leicester, this would be a great attraction to a lovely guest house.

A very friendly group of staff, who took good care of us and made us feel at home.

Room Tip: Be specific about your bathroom requirements, as a couple are not en-suite, although close. Ground...

We were looking for somewhere to stay while visiting relatives in the area and somewhere not too expensive. When we found this place we thought it looked to good to be true for the price, but took a chance anyway and I'm really pleased we did. We booked one of the upstairs rooms with a seperate bathroom on the floor below. The owners can't do enough for you and nothing is too much trouble. We can't comment on the food because we didn't eat there, but the restaurant looked really good. Everywhere is clean and tidy and although the carpets are a little worn and decor is a little tired in places the atmosphere and character of the building is fantastic with flagstones and period features. There is free WiFi and off road parking. We will definitely be back.
