“So special that its tempting to keep it a secret”
Reviewed 22 May 2012

We didn't think anywhere as special as this existed in the UK. Astoundingly good . Amazing dining experience , the food, the ambience , the service were all faultless. We had only booked one night and stayed in one of the shieling lodges separate to the main hotel. Absolutely wonderful accomodation and the setting is achingly beautiful. Worth every single penny. I would rather stay one night in this lovely peaceful haven than three somewhere more average.Full marks to all the staff, it takes a lot of hard work to provide an experience which is this good. We will return and just pray that it remains as special with the attention to detail we experienced on this occasion.

Room Tip: The shieling lodges are lovely -fall asleep to the sound of water over stone from the burn nearby.

We stayed here to celebrate our 1st Wedding Anniversary and could not have picked a better venue to do so.
From the minute we arrived until we sadly left we had a fabulous time in one of the Shieling Lodges which are individual ''rooms'' which would put many a 5 star hotel bedroom to shame set in the hotel grounds.

The level of attention to detail from James the General Manager & his staff is second to none and they go out of their way to ensure that you are looked after.

We opted for the 7 course Tasting Menu for dinner and were not disappointed in the 7 small tasting courses that were presented to us.

Combined with some well chosen wines recommended by James we had a wonderful meal that we shall remember for a long time.

Breakfast was again another theatrical experience and one to be savoured.

The views from our Lodge and down the Loch from the hotel jetty were simply stunning.

Yes the cost of the superior rooms can be expensive but for a special occasion well worth it for this level of service & quality.

Looking forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: Go for the Shieling Lodges for some luxury & escapism.

Praise where it is not only due but most certainly deserved.......the attention of all the staff to detail and our personal requirements was outstanding. The superior suite lived up to its description and more. It put to shame many five star hotels I have stayed at. It was large airy, well heated when required and superbly equipped from the bed, mattress and pillows to the assortment of teas and wonder of wonders; ground coffee and percolator. The marble bathroom was fit for a palace. So why the title of this review? The style of cooking, lavishly praised by so many others, was not for me. I would call it "nouvelle cuisine" with the pejorative connotation that word now seems to encompass. After a day`s walking in the glens we wanted good old fashioned Scottish cooking....eg a fair sized bowl of scotch broth or similar, a plate of venison medallions or prime Aberdeen Angus fillet steak, or finely prepared Scotch salmon etc etc with home grown vegetables but what was served was a series of miniscule dishes prepared as if for an art show. They tasted superb but were as far as we were concerned fit to be starters. The soup on offer would hardly have filled a small coffee cup. When haddock was available for breakfast I expected a single fillet but a piece only about two inches square was served. At the price I expect two eggs any style instead of the single small proudly "slow cooked at 50*" egg that was presented. My wife requested off the menu Scottish salt porridge and appreciated what the chef cooked.

I was expecting The Beatles and got a string quartet. Perhaps I do have poor taste.

Room Tip: Superior room fantastic

From the moment we arrived until the moment we left everything............and I mean everything was above and beyond anything we have experienced in any other hotel we have stayed in and that includes a few so called 5* establishments. From the moment we were welcomed into the hotel by James and Rodney it was obvious that this was service with a real personal touch. We went there for our wedding anniversary and as a result we were put in one of the cottage suites just outside the main building. It was just fabulous with a huge bathroom with roll top bath. The bedroom was just as classy with great views down to the loch.

The food and service in the restaurant was truly wonderful. Each dish was an absolute treat to both the eye and the palate. This is some of the best food I have ever tasted and the skill and dedication of the kitchen staff shone through. Combine this with front of the house service that was just superb and the whole experience was absolutely memorable. James knowledge of wines help to guide us through the choices and the recommended wine was a treat. The serving staff explained every dish in great detail and were most helpful without ever being intrusive. Wonderful!!!!

A good nights sleep in a very comfortable bed was followed by a breakfast that was delivered with the same class as the night before and the same excellent flavours and presentation was there on the various plates yet again.

This is one of these hotels that shows how it should be done. No detail was overlooked in ensuring your stay would be one never to forget.

A huge thanks to everyone working in the hotel from the front of house to the unsung heroes of the back room staff for making this a very special wedding anniversary. We will be back soon.

We can only echo and add our voice to the existing reviews of this stunning hotel. In fact this is less of a hotel and more of an experience. From the minute we set foot in the door James and the rest of the staff made this place feel special, their attention to detail, respectful friendliness and thoughtfulness are an example to all other hotels. The loch view room we were upgraded to gave a breathtaking view of snow capped mountains and Loch Tay, who needs a TV when you have that view. The food was just as good as the other reviews say and the menu and wine list had clearly been put together with thought and no little skill. We feel like this little gem of a hotel won't stay a secret for very long. One word.... Spectacular!

First visit since the new owners took over. Overall nice ambience and great food.Views are still stunning. Recommend the taster menu, truly excellent.I will be intrigued to see how the designer re-branding goes, Especially enjoyed the personal attention from James and the team.
