Always a restful stay over en route from Johannesburg to Maputo. The food is excellent and as good as any of the top restaurants in South Africa. Their attention to detail is amazing. The rooms are comfortable , although some are a bit dated. As you lie in your bed drifting off to sleep, the owls are calling each other outside. Marion and Paul offer personal service to all their guests.
Try and stay more than one night so that you can take a slow walk around their labyrinth

We stayed at Old Joe's Kaia on the way back from the Kruger Park en route to Johannesburg. The site was very difficult to locate as the N4 splits and heads off in two directions, eventually coming back together. The issue of getting easily lost further is compounded by how most cities and towns in South Africa are being renamed without any reference to their previous names (thanks SA Tourism, nice job)!

We eventually arrived at the Lodge and the owners were extremely welcoming and cooked us up a delicious supper. Sadly we only stayed for one night and had to depart after breakfast, which was ample and very tasty. The gardens are charming and the Lodge backs on to the Crocodile river, so we will come back some time soon to relax and explore the area.

We where there in July 2012. All the people there where very friendly. The food, was one the best we had in South-Afrika, the Breakfast was absolutly great. Served on a sunny balcon, we can enjoy all the birds an the great view. This is the perfecct start in the day. The diner in the mainroom was great. For this price, i think, you cant get a better food in South Africa. Also our Birdwatch with the guide was also very good. The guide told as a lot of things and shows us a little Kudu :)
I hope we can come back one day.

Sadly spent only one night here, but highly enjoyable. Both dinner and breakfast were superb and we enjoyed an early morning two-hour bird walk with Appreciation. Loved the ambience and specifically the flower arrangements all from the garden. Take time to walk to the veggie garden and labyrinth. We will be back, but next time for two nights.

I recently attended a birding course at Old Joe’s Kaia. What a wonderful venue it turned out to be. I certainly hope to make many more visits to the Kaia before I “kick the bucket”.

The first thing that strikes one is OJK’s beautiful setting in Schoeman’s Kloof. The magnificent views from the balcony only serve to emphasise this. Old Joe’s also offers ample opportunities to explore and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty, as we did.

Next, you get to experience the warm and friendly hospitality of your hosts. Paul and Marian go out of their way to please their guests, and it seems that nothing is too much trouble for them. Each meal is an experience to look forward to. Not only are they wholesome and very tasty, but they are also so very well prepared and presented. Marian seems to just keep on coming up with wonderful new recipes. An experience not to be missed.

Paul’s selection of background music is very tastefully done. It always complements the ambiance and is never too loud. It remains in the background and contributes to your relaxation.

My log cabin was a treat, too! It was very comfortable and well appointed. It was also very well maintained, with everything working absolutely perfectly. Sure, there was some traffic noise from the nearby road, but I soon got used to this and slept well.

The facilities provided for our course were dead right, so that we could study in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.

The course was well presented by a man who really knows his subject matter, and made good use of interactivity to keep us involved and interested. Well done, Ulrich!

Keep an eye on the Old Joe’s website for similar courses and events. I certainly shall. Learning in such a relaxing atmosphere was a real treat. Mind you, there is no need to wait for an event. A stay over at Old Joe’s would be a very relaxing and pleasant experience, anyway.
