“Old Joes Kaia”
Reviewed 22 September 2013

We have just spent a wonderful weekend at Old Joe's Kaia. Marian and Paul and all the staff made us most welcome! We were given a pretty room with a balcony , where we could watch beautiful birds , including the Nerina Trogan and Oriole . If you need to know anything about birds , Appreciate is absolutely amazing with his knowledge! His HUGE smile tells you , exactly how much he loves answering the questions!!! The food is absolutely wonderful ........ Beautifully presented and tasty. The wine selection is very thoughtfully chosen , definitely not your usual selection! A walk in the garden is a must .we also had a lovely walk along the river , all clearly marked. The labyrinth is beautifully maintained and very relaxing to walk along. A Wonderful weekend.

Room Tip: All the rooms are nice!

After a long day on the road Old Joe's is a great place to stop, rest and reload! We particularly like the Kaia's as the rooms are quite and homely! The food is always an absolute must and don't skip dinner as this is one of the highlights of a trip to Joe's! We will definitely be back and recommend you to stop and see for yourself!

My wife and I are lucky enough to spend several weeks each year in South Africa and we travel quite extensively yet we have never been as impressed as we were by Old Joe's. Our log cabin and view were a real and expected pleasure but it was the aura of sanctuary and seclusion which really captivated us and this is something which the owners, Marian and Paul, very consciously work to create. The setting gives them a flying start but every aspect reinforces this: the cuisine is individual and beautifully presented; nothing is too much trouble; and I never thought I could comment positively on background music, but Paul's sensitive and coherent moods of sound drift unobtrusively through mealtimes with a wonderful ambience.
Old Joe's is consciously planned to support a natural, for some spiritual, atmosphere. For the way staff treat each other and their guests to the thoughtful and beautiful walks available, it would be a real shame to stay only one night at a time. If you want a short break which is more than accommodation I believe you would love Old Joe's, as long as you are not a high speed Joburg business type too stressed to slow down and look around you.
The sense of commitment and idealism is genuinely tangible and also unpretentiously entirely sincere. All we could advise as the slightest caveat is that the nearby N4 can just be heard at times, but this is not constant and we soon forgot about it: the stunning scenery, the warmth of the welcome and the fastidious attention to every detail obliterate any negative. It even seems to attract the nicest and most interesting people as guests!

Room Tip: The log cabins are a delight - oh and Old Joe's is situated off the North N4 loop, not the South...

I agree with other reviews about Old Joe's being the perfect stopover on route to Kruger. We got there late after a long flight and it was very nice to have a gourmet meal in their charming diningroom. The food is very fresh, organic, and prepared with alot of creativity. Breakfast was also first-rate and served on their deck overlooking the mountains and surrounding garden.

Our family of four booked the family room which was perfect for us - especially with two separate baths. Very spacious and clean. There is a nice deck with a view that I wish I had more time to enjoy. I would definitely stay two nights if you are getting an early start to Kruger because you will miss the labyrinth and all the beautiful artwork in the garden, not to mention the awesome breakfast. If you are coming back from Kruger, this is a perfect place to stop for lunch on your way back to Joburg.

Room Tip: Call ahead if you are running late - there is a locked gate at night

We just spent the long weekend at Old Joes. We arrived as typically stressed Joburgers and left feeling like we had been away for weeks.

The food is excellent, the wine selection good and the service is attentive and personal. It is one of those places where you instantly relax as there is 'nothing' to do apart from lounging around and exploring the lovely gardens and the nearby Crocodile River. We had an excellent guided birding walk with Appreciate which is a wonderful way to spend a few hours.

If you do wish to get out and about, Old Joes is conveniently placed to Nelspruit, Kaapsehoop and other tourist spots in the Lowveld.

Thanks to Marian, Paul and James for their personal service.

We will be back to spend another super relaxing weekend.

Old Joe's Kaia is a wonderful getaway - its tranquil surroundings with an easy walk down to the river are just what you need to unwind. Follow this up with Marian's wonderful dinner and a bottle of wine from their carefully-stocked cellar, and it makes for a perfect evening. The service here is always friendly and attentive and therefore this is a place to which we always come back to.
