Many folks refer to Old Joe's as a great halfway stop between here and there. We think it is a destination worthy of a visit in its own right. We have enjoyed three weekend stays there and plan more. When you arrive the welcome is always such that it feels Marian, Vikki and Paul have been waiting just for you - and their service, friendliness and hospitality endures your whole stay. The gardens in which the lodge is located are so beautiful and our time on the wooden deck above the gardens, bird watching, dining intimately or just sitting chatting was wonderfully relaxing. Meals are just exquisite. You need to taste them - culinary treat of note. 'Nuff said.

We've always opted for the log cabins because of their great positioning in the lush "forest". They are more than comfortable, spotless and really cosy. We really enjoyed sitting on the small verandah watching the birds flit from branch to branch. (In fact this is where we had our first sighting of the elusive Narina Trogan).

What we like most about Old Joe's is the relaxed, warm "home from home" ambiance created by the hosts. The decor is wonderfully unique, warm and original and the gentle rhythm of classical guitar in the lounge is so relaxing.

Old Joe's is a must.

We have been to Old Joe's Kaia in the past and specifically went back there for several reasons. Firstly it is a beautiful, peaceful place in awesome surroundings. Secondly, the food is truly exceptional and without a doubt the best you will find anywhere in the area. Thirdly, the management and staff are friendly, personable and pay attention to the finest detail. It is a wholesome and pleasant experience from start to finish and we will definitely go back again. It has become one of our top destinations in the low veld.

Old Joe's creates a" home from home" atmosphere. The staff are wonderful and friendly and always willing to make great suggestions of things to do in the area. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The cosy evenings in the dining/ lounge area or eating on the wooden deck overlooking an indigenous garden teeming with birdlife are not to be missed. The library and attention to detail by providing all the things one forgets - mosquito mats , umbrellas, torches cosy quilts and to my husbands delight, filter coffee make this a very special place to visit. Last but not least is Marian's indigenous labyrinth which provided a place for reflection for all of us.

Old Joe’s Kaia has a perfect driving position halfway from Johannesburg to Kruger Park.
We stopped in this wonderful country house the night before our visit at Kruger and, we loved so much, to come back a second time.
The hospitality is friendly and intimate at the same time. Paul and Marian take care of every detail to make you feel at home.
The wooden cabins are so lovely.
We also recommend the Marian’s cuisine. The food is delicious and presented with the utmost care.
Have dinner in Old Joe’s Kaia is really romantic!
We want to say thank to Paul and Marian for the beautiful memories of days spent at Old Joe’s Kaia.

Stay here for the food if nothing else! Dinner was great -- four excellent courses using fresh produce and very reasonably priced too. But if you're hungry you might get a bit impatient -- food is slow cooked and service leisurely. Of course trout features widely on the menu. Breakfast was also a treat -- menu was wide and delicious.

I have a few gripes -- the first is not the fault of Old Joe's -- it can be noisy because Old Joe's is situated on the Scholemanskloof Road which can get busy, even at night. The rooms and bathrooms are also tired and need of refurbishment. Pool looked a bit murky.

If you go, be sure to go on the recommended walk across the fields adjacent to Old Joe's. It runs along a very attractive section of river.

Spent the week-end here with my two children. We had a wonderful time, made all the more enjoyable by excellent hosting, wonderful food, and calm atmospere. Birdlife was fantastic and the y have a wonderful Labyrinth.
The central facilities are so comfortable and relaxed and the hosts could not do more to make our stay more comfortable.

I will go back.
