“Brilliant food, attentive staff, lovely garden”
Reviewed 11 June 2012

We went here for lunch on a very wet day. We all had the "Posh Fish and Chips" special, which far surpassed our expectations when it arrived. It was a mammoth plateful of crispy haddock, salmon, scallops, tiger prawns, calamari, mushy peas and chunky chips. It was gorgeous and extremely good value for money at under £10. Although we couldn't enjoy the garden due to the rain, it would have been lovely in the sun - the views are great. We didn't stay in the hotel but wouldn't hesitate to as it looked wonderful and the restaurant was so welcoming. Would definitely go back.

Dear Sazzle02,

Thank you for your review, we all enjoyed reading it.

Our 'Posh Fish & Chips' lunchtime special has always been popular, and we often receive great feedback from our guests regarding it. Our garden, whilst small, is maintained by our full-time maintenance team and is extremely popular in the summer months - next time you visit, I hope we are enjoying some sunshine so you and your friends can sit outside!

Kind regards,

Just got back from a lovely 1 night stay at the crab in chieveley and was so thrilled with it. We stayed in La Mamounia room with our own private hot tub and it was just amazing. The staff were lovely and accomodating. We brought our own champagne and they happily provided us with glasses and an ice bucket. The room was beautiful and morrocan themed, very roomy and the bed was honestly the most comfortble and soft i have ever slept on in my 23 years of life! breakfast was delicious however i didnt manage too much after feeling a bit delicate from the champagne. My only complaints were our hot tub didnt heat up past 34 degrees without the manager having to come over and fill it up with the hot tap, but once this was done it was a lovely 40 degrees during the cold late evening. Also we got a bit peckish at around 11pm and there seemed to be no where to get food from and rarely any places that deliver this far out. Our stay at this hotel was definately one to remember and we will be making it a regular thing. Worth the 2 hour drive from home!

Room Tip: If you love a warm bright and cosy room choose La Mamounia, a good size with en suite and a private...

Dear jld010689,

Thanks for posting such a lovely review. Whilst we often receive complimentary comments with regards to our hot tub rooms, it is always nice to read positive guest feedback and your comments have been shared with the whole team.

All of our hot tubs are cleaned and maintained daily, and set to their default temperature setting of 38 degrees Celsius. If the cover is left off for any length of time, the water temperature has a tendency to drop by a few degrees, especially if the outside temperature is very cool. We can combat the drop in temperature by topping up the hot tubs with hot water.

We all look forward to welcoming you back on a return visit in the near future.

Kind regards,

Tim Healey

We started off by having a few drinks on the the sofas and perused the menu, whilst a Paella was being cooked in the corner of the restaurant. It filled the restaurant with a delightful smell and all I could see were happy faces everywhere. It was a busy night and it added a great amibence to the restaurant. We started off with some tapas for a starter which were delightful before moving onto one of the best paella's I have ever tasted and there so much of it as well that I certainly was not going to go hungry!! The staff were really attentive but my favourite part of the evening came with desert. The assiette of deserts was just heavenly. I can't imagine anything more that you would want from a pudding. A throughly enjoyable evening and I will most certainly be back.

Dear Charlotte O,

Thank you for posting your review about our Paella night. Your comments have been passed to the kitchen and front of house restaurant team.

The Paella night started as just a quirky idea and quickly became very successful; all feedback from those that attended has been excellent. Subsequently, we are planning similar events throughout the rest of the year.

We very much look forward to welcoming you back to The Crab at Chieveley in the near future.

We stayed at this hotel as a treat for my 30th birthday. The reception staff were faultless when we checked in, we were shown to our room and were impressed by the large bed and tv and of course the hot tub!! We went to the bar and ordered a jug of pimms which we took to the room and drank whilst in the hot tub relaxing in the afternoon sunshine, it was perfection!!
We ate at the restaurant in the eve which wasn't my cup of tea as I'm not a fish lover, if you are then I imagine you would be in your element as the menu was amazing. I had steak which was very nice. If I'm being honest I will say that next time I will be eating dinner at the pub down the road as it will suit my taste better and also be a bit cheaper as the prices where quite steep (although understandable with the quality of the foods and overheads)
The breakfast was very tasty too and the staff were very attentive.
Overall what a lovely chilled out break we had at the crab, I'm already planning when we can go back!!
Oh and I will also point out there are lovely bathrobes and slippers in the room as well as delightful smelling shampoos etc and there is a hairdryer in the room and coffee machine! As well as tea/coffee facilities and a jar of yummy biscuits :)

Room Tip: Choose a hot tub room! Amazing!!

Dear hollyroberts08,

Thanks for your review and your comments. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay with us last week. It was definitely the right weather to be drinking Pimms in the hot tub!

Our menus are, as you would expect from a seafood restaurant, heavily focused on fish and shellfish dishes. We do, however, offer several meat and vegetarian alternatives for starters and main courses on all our menus - some of which are as popular as our best-selling fish dishes.

The amenities in our 'famous' themed rooms are of the best available quality that we can source from our suppliers.

Again, thanks for posting your review, the team and I very much look forward to welcoming you back very soon.

Kind regards,

My partner booked this for us last minute as a birthday treat and im so happy he did! The room was perfect - loved the Moroccan style (although i believe the rooms all have different themes), and the hot tub was a fantastic addition - particularly as the weather was so good when we visited. The bed was really comfortable and i really cant fault the room at all - very clean with a very large tv! We also had dinner in the restaurant which again was fantastic, as was the service. Cant wait to come back :)

I booked the Crab as a surprise for my husband's birthday. We stayed in a hot tub room and ate lunch, dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. The rooms are interesting and well appointed, especially the Espresso coffee machine was a nice touch. Lovely soft fluffy towels etc. The hot tub gardens are private and nice but be warned they set them at what I consider a dangerously high temperature e.g. 39-40 degrees. They said most people want them that hot. Having owned one and when you go to a health spa they are usually about 36-37 degrees. Those few degrees was too much. My legs were burning - it was like stepping into a red hot bath. The maintenance man said if we go again we need to let him know and he will pre-set them to our required temperature which is a good idea. They changed our room to one which had a hot tub slightly cooler. They did this with no fuss and were very accommodating. The food was lovely for all meals, especially the paella on Thursday night. We had the sharing desert plate which was huge - beautiful by huge! All in all a lovey experience and very helpful and friendly staff. We will definitely return. It was a very hot day and we did find the bedrooms rather hot I must confess as there is only one window/door to let air in. Possibly the walled garden outside prevents too much cool air flowing?

Room Tip: Hot tub rooms are great, just make sure you tell them the temperature you want it set at otherwise y...

Dear Jacqui W,

Thanks for taking the time to post a review.

Our hot tub rooms have always been our most popular, and we often receive complimentary comments from our guests staying in them. All of our rooms are equipped with Nespresso coffee machines, freeview television and DVD players as standard, all of which have been well received by our guests.

The five hot tubs we have on site are set to 38 degrees Celsius as a default setting. Through guest feedback, we have found that this is a temperature that most of our guests find most comfortable. I appreciate that some may prefer it to be cooler or hotter, and there are clear temperature dials on the control panel for our guests to adjust for their own comfort.

Whilst it is not a current standard of practise, if a guest were to request in advance that the temperature be slightly lower for their arrival, we would oblige willingly and make the necessary arrangements.

I am glad that you enjoyed our 'Paella Night' last week, we have run them every Thursday throughout May and they are becoming more and more popular. Please keep an eye on our website for upcoming events throughout the summer.

We all look forward to welcoming you back to The Crab at Chieveley soon.

Many thanks, and kind regards,

I visited the Crab for lunch with my husband on May bank holiday (7th), we thought we would treat ourselves since we had a day off work together and we certainly were not disappointed. We arrived early and were given the option to either sit straight at our table or at the bar for a drink. We were suprised that our table was available, it seems that the table was ours for the whole service, none of the table-turning nonsense. It was very busy, as expected for a bank holiday but the service was perfect, the staff were organised, well dressed and polite. The manager was excellent when he took our order, made sure we had everything we needed, didn't rush s even though the restaurant was very busy, he was friendly and very helpful with questions on the menu and the wine - he seemed young, but after speaking with him I understand why he is management. We were very impressed to say the least.

I cannot fault the food at all, our starters and mains arrived promptly (again, a suprise as the restaurant was so busy) and they were both delicious. I love fish and my dishes were cooked to perfection. Compliments to the kitchen staff. Had the cheese for afters, fantastic choices of British cheeses.

I would most definitely eat at the crab, I was very very impressed.
