Unfortunately myself and my fiance stayed in Bird Island - a hot tub room - and caught folliculitis from the hot tub. This is a skin infection caused by poorly maintained swimming pools and hot tubs. We saw a doctor as our skin got increasingly rashy / itchy / sore and as we never go swimming, the only option was the hot tub. It also developed 72 hours (ish) after our stay which is exactly right. Now - we have stayed at this hotel before and really enjoyed ourselves so sent them a very lovely email suggesting that they address the conditions of their hot tub to prevent other people catching folliculitis as it really is horribly unpleasant. However - they didn't respond! We find this incredibly unprofessional and so have posted our complaint on here instead, which we would not have done had they simply responded.

The crab at Chievely
We booked a two night break and were made to feel really special. Every member of staff we met were polite and friendly. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We arrived a little early as the check in was at 4 pm so we sat in the bar and with the help of two or three staff members completed our online quiz!
Our room for the night was Tree Tops, a safari themed room, spacious and comfortable. Lovely touches included the homemade biscuits and plentiful toiletries.

Our evening meal was delicious, beautifully presented with immaculate service. We found the waiting staff efficient but not too obtrusive , just as it should be. The Crab is an award winning establishment and you will find lots of reviews on line describing the food far better than I can!
Breakfast was served in the restaurant. There was the usual, and quite ordinary, cereal boxes and fruit salad in tiny bowls a choice of juices and muffins. However once seated you could order from the menu for freshly prepared Eggs Benedict, scrambled egg and traditional breakfast. These were delicious especially the Eggs Royale a indulgent twist on Eggs Benedict ,with superbly poached eggs and lashings of smoked salmon! The toast was made from their home made bread, brought at the start of the meal and replenished if needed.

For our second night we moved to the Borro Borro room, which had an outside hot tub. The staff managed the transition from one room to another seamlessly giving us a very late checkout from Tree Tops and an extra early checking to Borro Borr.
Each room we stayed in had ample electrical sockets to enable recharging of technical equipment.
Not sure if this is a superb fish restaurant with rooms or a destination hotel providing an excellent menu, but we have booked a return visit , taking advantage of one of their package deals.

Room Tip: Each room is different, so best to ring to ask about these very individual rooms .

For a meal it was Terrible. ( the B&B is very good, I have written a seperate review of that.)

The food is pretentious and expensive. When we asked the waiter if it was possible to change the meal (add something) he said “NO”, at that price I would expect him to tap dance if I asked!

Very expensive for what you get, it is not worth the drive (even if you lived in Chievley!).

I just like to warn other travellers about booking with this hotel.

We booked a one night's stay (with our friends who we only see very rarely) as a surprise for our husbands and for my wedding anniversary which falls on valentine's day. I booked in June 2013 and pointed out that it was valentine's day and was given a price of £205 for bed and breakfast for the two of us.

On 6 January we got a phone call saying the chef had changed the menu for valentine's day and our stay our now cost another £50 per adult due to this change. I just could not afford that and we have now cancelled our stay.

I think it is terrible that a hotel can take a booking and then try and charge an additional fee even though it was pointed out at the time it was a special booking.

I now have to make alternative arrangements at such short notice for my wedding anniversary, most places that are within my budget are now booked up!!!!

Just wanted to warn others so they do not make the same mistake.

We went for lunch, couldn't fault a thing, staff very pleasant and attentive, food exquisite !, I had roast lamb with all the trimmings while the other three in our group ate a la carte, myhusband had the monkfish en-croute along with our friend, her husband had the rack of lamb, all cooked to perfection. When the waiter realised it was a birthday celibration, at the end of our meal they came out and sang happy birthday and brought out petit fours with a candle and happy birthday pipped onto the plate, a very nice touch.

Room Tip: Did not stay, only went for lunch

Me and my partner have stayed at The Crab at Chieveley hotel every year since we have been together. We go back every year because not only are the rooms beautiful but the staff are so helpful and polite. We have stayed in the famous rooms with an outdoor hot tub and also the spa suite with the indoor spa bath. I really like the outdoor hot tubs, although outdoor they are private hidden under a little roof the hot tub is spacious for a couple but so romantic, perfect for summer but we did stay in October one year and the outdoor hot tub was still lovely as it kept us really warm. The rooms are so special as they are all different. Personally my favourite room is the bayan tree room with the indoor spa bath, the spa bath is so relaxing and the whole room was beautifully laid out and very modern it also has a very big screen tv. The whole atmosphere of the hotel is lovely and it is situated close to the centre of Newbury so there is so much to do before check in. I didnt eat in the restaurant as me and my partner both dont like seafood but i have heard positive things about the food. I have booked to go back for 2014 the rooms can be pricey but defiantly worth the investment!

Really Good food & OK service. Be wary of the size of the main courses as they are smaller than your starters. Specially Gnocchi- but it was delicious. A bit expensive but a good treat for your pallet.
