We booked a weekend in the Banyan Tree spa room as a treat for my birthday, as we opened the door, it was stunning, clean, well equipped and looked amazing, the bed was unbelievable comfortable, plenty of room the store clothes, shoes and bags without tripping over them constantly, as with many hotels, the bathroom smelt fresh and looked clean, with beautifully laundered towels and robes, plenty of super hot water whenever it was required and more than sufficient toiletries available. The tea and coffee facilities were well presented and stocked too, with the use of a kettle and a coffee machine, there was a great choice of teas, coffees and hot chocolate not to mention delicious home baked biscuits. We ate in the restaurant both evenings, there was a lovely atmosphere with friendly, helpful staff. The food was amazing, I love fish and had a lobster starter followed by halibut the first evening and scallops followed by lemon sole the second and it was all cooked to perfection, my fiancé who has in his career has gained a Michelin star himself was speechless and was dying to be able to find fault, but couldn't and thoroughly enjoyed eating the food that was obviously cooked by someone who loves his job and food. Although the hotel is situated on quite a busy main road, I didn't at anytime find it a problem. We enjoyed a lovely morning of shopping in Newbury. In summary fab place, can't fault it, so much so with got home and booked to go back for my fiancés birthday in September.

Room Tip: I would definately recommend the Banyan Tree room for its style and class, although is next to the main road, so maybe not if road noise is a no no for you but I think the positives of this room far out way the small negative.

This is the second time I have visited the Crab and enjoyed the food. The service is a bit disorganised though. Not sure having 4 different people looking after your table really works. Being asked if you want more drinks on 3 occasions by 3 different people in the space of 10 mins can be annoying when you are trying to have a conversation with your loved one!

We first went to the Crab in 2010 and have been back almost every year since. Recently stayed in Jan 2014 for my husbands bday. Each time we have been we have stayed in a different room. The rooms are fab! We love going to The Crab simply for the get away with great food and alone time together. It's fab for romantic couples! The food here is amazing. We often go for The Lobster but it's all fantastic. Great cocktails but it is very quiet but we like that for that kind of chilled night away. My top favourite rooms are Bird Island and Bora Bora. I'm not a fan of Soneva Fushi room. It's a bit tired and also quite noisy as by the road. I have recommended The Crab to so many people and we look forward to coming every year. I'm sorry to read about the couple the got the skin problem from the hot tub and quite rightly so, The management should have got back to you most defenatly. The only criticism I will say is on our recent stay, the waitress did come to our table 3 times with the wrong food. Not as good service as usual. However it didn't spoil our evening and we will be returning next year. We love The Crab! Oh and the breakfasts are great too!

We gave The Crab many chances to redeem itself but it failed at every point.

Our first room was insanely noisy. The manager did move us to a quieter room when we asked but the shower didn't work in there and we had to move to a third room just to get clean!

In the restaurant there are too many 'bad' tables: 2 seaters just plonked in the room and have waiters rushing past you constantly. As for the food, we ordered the crab (naturally) to start but it was fairly tasteless and full of shell. We followed with the seafood platter in which 50% of it was too disappointing to eat. When flagging these things we were met with no real offers to change/improve our meal.

At the end of the meal, when offered dessert wine, we were told there was only one available (without a menu) and when the bill came it was £54. Far more than we had intended to pay and significantly more than your average 500ml bottle.

When we approached the manager about our stay, they offered us a room upgrade if we stayed again - totally useless when considering our stay, the last thing we want to do was spend another £200 going back there!

A very underwhelming experience. So many other wonderful places to go, so try those rather than the Crab!

Room Tip: If you do go, beware of any of the rooms on the main road - so noisy! The cars constantly whiz past the windows as the road is right there.

Stayed on Sunday 2nd February 2014 in a hot tub room. We arrived and were shown to our room. The hottub was on and up to temperature. Jumped in there with a bottle of fizz before dinner. Although 'private' gardens you can see through gaps in fences and some of the upper rooms could overlook if they wanted to, but obviously not a problem if you're just enjoying the tub!! Robes and slippers provided as well. Although a Sunday night the restaurant was busy enough with people to create a lovely atmosphere. Our meal was absolutely amazing. We were brought an oyster (cooked) as an amuse bouche and it was yummy - never had one before! The service was very good - not slow as mentioned in some other reviews. Wine also very good. Excellent value for money and went back to the room to chill in the hot tub. We ordered breakfast to be delivered to the room at 10am and it arrived bang on time. Brilliant. Will come again.
