Stayed for several nights over New Year, a last minute break, but by no means cheap. As we drove up the drive we questioned whether we were in the right place, the general appearance of the old building gives an impression of neglect.
We were pleasantly greeted at Reception, and given our room keys, together with WiFi codes, but not told they were only valid for 24 hours!
Our room was in the new part of the hotel, spacious, but rather odd that, having booked a twin room we had a double (4' 6") and a single bed. The décor was lovely, and the bathroom nice, but a little more attention should have been paid to the cleaning, lots of dust in corners and on things like the toilet roll holders. Lovely White Company toiletries, but had to ask for hair conditioner.
Usual tea and coffee tray, TV and hairdryer. As mentioned elsewhere, the room was very, very warm, and the window difficult to open. The air-con did not appear to work.
Breakfasts were good, huge range of food, and wonderful fresh honeycomb.
Apart from the New Year's Eve dinner, evening meals were excellent too, but £9.50 for the cheese board, what a rip-off, and the "home-made" oatcakes were dreadful!
New Year's Eve Dinner cost £109, yes, there was a glass of ok wine with each course, and a glass of dreadful "Champagne" to toast New Year. The smoked salmon used in the starter was cut way too thick, and very salty, odd because the smoked salmon served at breakfast was lovely! Dessert looked impressive, but reminded us of a very poor Black Forest Gateau from the 70's.
Even the staff were embarrassed by the crackers,- cheap and ugly. Why?
It was a shame that no one told us the programme for New Years Eve, we had to ask, and no one told us breakfast would be served later on New Year's Day.
We used the swimming pool a couple of times, it is very small, not really for serious swimming. Sadly we were warned of the Jacuzzi by a "regular" who pointed out that it was very cloudy and looked "unhealthy" She reported it to Reception, but nothing appeared to be done about it as it didn't improve.
Would we return? Yes probably if we need an hotel in the area, but not for New Year's Eve.
