“Got it just right”
Reviewed 17 September 2016 for a stay in August 2016

This is an excellent base for holidaying in the Languedoc. But it's also somewhere you could while away your time in agreeable fashion, particularly around the pool, if lacking the urge to venture out.

The overall place is large, attractive and well maintained with several different buildings and areas to provide variety. We stayed in the Cottage and one of the upper gites, both beautiful barn conversions with plenty of space and the odd flourish or quirk to make them individual.

The property is based in a quiet, winegrowing village, a 10-15 minute stroll over the Orbieu river to the bakers and the main shop where we obtained breakfast and provisions. The supermarkets are a few minutes drive towards the nearest town, Lézignan, which has several good restaurants, notably the Lou Griffou.

We had such a lovely time here thanks in large part to the owner, Honor, who has got this just right. She was an ever-available source of advice, assistance and amusement and became a holiday friend herself along with the very friendly family in the other gite.

When we weren't lazing around the pool or struggling to get going in the morning we did manage to squeeze in some trips:

Ribaute for the river swimming and a picnic on sun-baked rocks;
The lagoons at Peyriac and Bages and then onto Narbonne for beautiful buildings and cool alleyways;
Carcassonne for its rich history and stunning views of the citadel (but watch out for the tourist traps);
A vineyard in the Malepère AOC to learn about winemaking;
A wonderful stretch of sandy beach to the north of Gruissan.

Things that stick in my mind include a flock of pink flamingoes at the lagoons, wild boars' hooves nailed to doors at Bages, supping Minervois wine on the ramparts of Carcassonne while looking over to the vineyards it came from, the enormous fish in the deep water at Ribaute, the seemingly infinite stretches of sand down to Spain, finding a little lost dog for a neighbour, the very friendly locals tolerating our sad attempts at French, and the great big bear of a dog that is Bob, guarding us.

The week was rounded off with a good social evening at the local tapas bar (Chez Bembe) and a few hours in the beautiful city of Foix in the foothills of the pyrénées before our flight home.

Thank you Chris and your gorgeous family for a really enjoyable week! I felt I was on holiday with you and the other family too! I honestly think some solid friendships were formed that week and I look forward to sharing many a witty repartee with you over a glass of vin again some day (here!) soon. xx

Back for our second year at Maison de la Roche. The kids were looking forward to it all year! Such a lovely mixture of exploring and time by the pool and relaxing under the trees. We spent more time in Fabrezan village this time, only a few minutes away and with really lovely restaurants. Our favourite beach at Leucate called us back and being only about 30 minutes to the coast, it meant lots of fantastic days by the sea. We explored a few towns we loved last time and added others; castles, picnics, markets, puppet shows and picturesque windy streets kept us all entertained. Honor is always on hand to offer info on local events, suggest restaurants and provide anything you might need for your stay. We all think 2 weeks at Maison de la Roche goes in a flash and is never enough! Enjoy!

It was so lovely to see you both and your totally gorgeous cute children. Its lovely that the children feel so comfortable around MdlR and with me and Bob the dog and I enjoyed my little chats with them. Thank you for choosing to come back here. I realise there is a whole huge world to explore out there but it means a lot when people choose to come back... till next time (I hope!) lots of love xx

“Pretty gites with great facilities”
Reviewed 2 September 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We stayed in the cottage which we recommend for the small private garden. Very child friendly and lovely pool and childrens toys available. The gite is well equiped and perfectly situated for all the great days out the area has to offer in a lovely village with handy local shops. Only issue was the dog barking on 3 nights and the stairs in the cottage are not suitable for elderly and you need a stairgate for very young children. Otherwise, a fab stay!

Really delighted to meet you and also host both lots of inlaws when they visited each day. I have a stair gate and would have been happy to install it for you.You only needed to ask! And I apologise for the dog. I tend to bring him in most nights . But may not have on these occasions. I ask my guests to make sure they are happy with everything as I can always find a solution. Look forward to meeting you all again

“Fantastic Holiday at a Beautiful Property”
Reviewed 2 September 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We had a fantastic week at the Maison De La Roche, and Honor could not have been a better host. The gite we stayed in shared a landing with our friends who were holidaying with us. It was kitted out with everything we needed. Around the property were plenty of places to sit and catch the sun and enjoy a drop of the local wine (direct from the producer just a five minute walk up the road). Sitting out in the evening was particularly enjoyable.

The local area was beautiful, far more pleasant than previous holidays when we have stayed nearer the coast , with plenty to do. From relaxing in the many excellent restaurants to white water kayaking - you can holiday at any pace you like.

What really made our week exceptional though were the suggestions of what to try from Honor. She was always on hand when we needed advice, but left us to our own devices the rest of the time.

With the property having a locked front gate it was possible to let the children play freely around the property without being worried about their safety. We spent quite a lot of time around the gite, making particular use of the wonderful pool.

The extras that were provided for us, such as towels (even for beach use) and the large number of toys and games, meant that we could travel light but still have all that we needed on hand. The beach tent was particularly useful.

In short, it is a beautiful property in an exceptional region and we would strongly recommend it.

Thank you Honor for making us so welcome.

“Lovely holiday at a lovely Gite.”
Reviewed 28 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We stayed in one of the upper gites with a family we traveled with in the other. We had an absolutely fantastic experience all week. The host had extensive local knowledge and made us feel welcome whilst giving us the space to enjoy ourselves. We enjoyed some of her many recommendations including the beautiful town of Lagrasse , river swimming (and picnic), kayaking and great local restaurants (which she booked for us!)

The gites are absolutely lovely, with privacy being maintained by the surrounding wall and trees, which made it ideal for us with a travelling party of two families as we could enjoy the swimming pool and grounds securely.

There were a number of little touches that enhanced experience, like wi-fi, beach towels provided for the swimming pool, and the loan of bucket and spade for the beach.

Overall a fantastic holiday in a wonderful location!

“All round brilliant time, great host and wonderful accommodation x”
Reviewed 21 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We had such a wonderful time at Maison de la Roche - not only was the accommodation really welcoming, stylish decorated and full of everything you need - but Honor was a fabulous host - welcoming, open and full of good local knowledge of where to go and what to see. We very much enjoyed a day at Ribaute, a quick trip to Carcassonne and Narbonne and dinner out and about in the local villages. Lazy time by the pool was also fabulous. Book swap, toys for younger children, pool accessories, BBQ's and even picnic baskets are all provided for you to make your stay easy and totally relaxed. Highly recommend to all. The family dog Bob was a huge hit, very gentle and friendly x

“2 weeks was not enough”
Reviewed 18 August 2016 for a stay in July 2016

We've had lots of great holidays in France but this year's trip was outstanding, thanks to our wonderful gite accommodation - Maison de la Roche - owned and run by the lovely Honor.

Situated between Carcassonne and Narbonne, you've got lovely places to visit, easy access to the coast, fascinating heritage sites nearby and the beautiful countryside of Cathar Country to enjoy plus great wine, delicious food and a good chance of great weather. We enjoyed the lot! However, coming "home" each day to Maison de la Roche was a pleasure in itself. In fact, some days we didn't even bother going out at all! The three gites have been attractively designed and furnished, they are well appointed and very comfortable. In the unlikely event that something you need is missing from the gite, Honor will lend you her own (eg we fancied using a cafetiere rather than the gite's coffee machine so Honor gave us hers to use for the duration of our stay). All the gites are spacious and airey. We stayed in Upper Gite 2 and had the added enjoyment of the lovely view across to the hills.

The outdoor facilities are fabulous, with the pool area being the highlight. It's in a lovely position where both sun and shade is achieved throughout the day, so anyone can enjoy relaxing there. Great seating areas throughout the rest of the garden mean that you can find peace and quiet even if the pool is in use by noisy children!

Children are very welcome at Maison de la Roche, it's very safe and enclosed - rather like a beautiful, private oasis to be discovered behind the high walls and gates that enclose the grounds. There are lots of play things for them to enjoy while the adults relax. We were lucky enough to enjoy the company of the two families staying in the other gites during our 2 week stay. The old adage of "arrive as strangers, leave as friends" certainly held true. Honor organised a fabulous wine-tasting and tapas evening for all the adults one evening which was brilliant fun and definitely contributed to the sociability we enjoyed at MdlR.

I liked Honor from the moment I spoke to her on the phone when I was considering making the reservation. To be honest, after that first phone call, I wasn't going to book anywhere else! She's friendly, approachable, helpful and a mine of information about the local area, restaurants etc. And she's a terrific on-site presence at MdlR as it's also her home. I wish I lived there. 2 weeks was far too short!

All in all, I can't recommend this place highly enough. Summer 2016 - it was perfect.
