“Wonderful Maison de la Roche”
Reviewed 17 October 2016 for a stay in October 2016

We stayed at Maison de la Roche in early October 2016.
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Honor, who was the perfect host & a mine of information on the local area & beyond.
The gite was well appointed & perfect for our week long stay.
We were thrilled to be invited to join Honor & friends at the village fete on the evening of our arrival and although tired from our long drive, we enjoyed every minute & were made to feel very welcome.
Maison de la Roche is only a few minutes from the A61 motorway, but is very quiet & private, making the perfect base for our holiday in the region.
We visited Carcassonne, Narbonne & Collioure during our stay, we are also quite keen bird watchers & enjoyed the wildlife of the area.
It was a delight to watch a Kingfisher on the river as we walked to the village bolangerie for essential supplies.
Watching the pink Flamingoes at nearby Gruissan was also another special trip.
Maison de la Roche is a wonderful base for couples & families looking for luxury accomadation in the heart of the Aude area.
We will certainly return.
Many thanks to Honor for our brilliant holiday, not forgetting Bob, the dog, who was always there to greet us on our return each day.
We would not hesitate to recommend Maison de la Roche to family & friends.

“Second Time Around – Another Lovely Holiday”
Reviewed 2 October 2016 for a stay in September 2016

Our first visit was three years ago when we stayed in Upper Gite 1 with our teenagers and had a fab two weeks in August. It was an easy decision to return – although this time just the two of us and we stayed in the Secret Garden Cottage this time.

What was so enjoyable was that we still had more to explore in this beautiful area as well as rediscovering some lovely spots. We already knew it was easy to get to (we flew to Carcassonne airport) and to get around (the roads are so good here) and we were confident that the Gite would have everything we needed and would be comfortable – and so it was.

Highlights were cycling down the Cafe du Midi (Mellow Velos in Paraza were very efficient), our wine tour with Taste du Languedoc (Matt is a great guide) and a trip to Château de Peyrepertuse. We also liked Leucate Plage and loved the food at the little tapas/oyster bar on the road as you approach the beach (Le Rikou). I had the best grilled tuna ever! We also enjoyed re-visiting Lagrasse on our last day – it’s so pretty and we really enjoyed our long lunch at La Petite Maison before heading back to the airport. Although we packed in quite a few trips, we did manage quite a lot of down time as well and it felt a really long and relaxing week.

And finally - of course Honor was as welcoming and as friendly a host as ever and full of suggestions of where to go when we were dithering about what to do! She has made Maison de la Roche such a wonderful place to base a holiday from.

Thank you Jane and Stan. It was lovely to welcome you back . The biggest compliment anyone can pay to a gite owner is by returning. (As well as all the kind words) I am pretty sure that there is still a lot for you to discover so look forward to seeing you back here one day soon . Thank you again for choosing MdlR for your holiday . A plus xxx

“Wonderful place”

If you are looking for a quiet retreat in an authentic stylish location then this is the place for you. We stayed in Gite No3, The Secret Cottage. Very spacious and fully equipped with touches of style throughout and a lovely bathroom with quality fittings. A very practical kitchen with mod cons and a fine range cooker all gives this place an air of luxury. A few small steps across the courtyard is the enclosed and beautiful swimming pool where you can relax and chill out after a hard day exploring this fantastic region. Honor is the perfect host and makes you feel so welcome, as though we have been friends for years!

We feel that we've only scratched the surface of the Languedoc region with its stunning scenery, canal du Midi and tiny villages scattered throughout. We would very much like to return and this place would be our first choice.

In summary; Perfect.

Thank you Honor for everything! See you soon hopefully and Bob the dog too! :-)

Often holiday bookings don't live up to their ratings/reviews, however this did. We booked the two bedroom gite and it was excellent. Honor's information regarding the local area was very good and on her advice we has a excellent wine tasting tour with Matt, all in all a great week.

“The most beautiful accommodation in the South of France.”
Reviewed 19 September 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Wow, where to start?!..... If you want a holiday with less than a 2 hour flight from London Gatwick, luxury accommodation with every utensils you could need ( including beach towels and picnic hampers etc) , beautiful surroundings and amazing host then look no further. We stayed at the end of August in Gite 1 but all the gites are decorated to the same high standard and all have those extra finishing touches.
We spent each night star gazing with a bottle of wine( or two) in the secret garden with ,our now new friends, who were staying in the other Gites.
We had a lovely mixture of pool time, beach time and sightseeing, although the beaches and rivers won when it hit 39 degrees.
The river at Ribaute is a must, take a picnic and a rug- we went a few times,on one occasion there was a violinist playing in the middle of the rocks and waterfalls!..
The beach at Gruissan is highly recommended and well worth paying to hire the sun beds for that extra touch- lunches from the restaurant on the beach were devine.
Carcassonne cite was incredible to see with lots of bars/restaurants for a coffee/ lunch etc.
We went to Canal du Midi and en route stopped of for lunch at Cafe du Port in Parazza for lunch- Best lunch ever.
There is a lovely small pizzeria , 5 min drive from the Gite, at Fabrazan- which we used a couple of times, both meals were lovely.
There is a boulangerie within walking distance for your morning croissants and french sticks,
and a short drive away is the supermarkets and another boulangerie that is worth visiting , for filled picnic baguettes, croissants and an extra little treat!
Honor is the most fantastic host, was always on hand for recommendations of places to go and advice....and even called up to order us a take away pizza for lunch on our last day, nothing is too much trouble .
All in all we had the most perfect week in the South of France, came back with more friends than we went with and can't wait to get back out . Thank you Honor, Holly and Bob - your were amazing and helped to create another week full of beautiful memories for us all.

“Got it just right”
Reviewed 17 September 2016 for a stay in August 2016

This is an excellent base for holidaying in the Languedoc. But it's also somewhere you could while away your time in agreeable fashion, particularly around the pool, if lacking the urge to venture out.

The overall place is large, attractive and well maintained with several different buildings and areas to provide variety. We stayed in the Cottage and one of the upper gites, both beautiful barn conversions with plenty of space and the odd flourish or quirk to make them individual.

The property is based in a quiet, winegrowing village, a 10-15 minute stroll over the Orbieu river to the bakers and the main shop where we obtained breakfast and provisions. The supermarkets are a few minutes drive towards the nearest town, Lézignan, which has several good restaurants, notably the Lou Griffou.

We had such a lovely time here thanks in large part to the owner, Honor, who has got this just right. She was an ever-available source of advice, assistance and amusement and became a holiday friend herself along with the very friendly family in the other gite.

When we weren't lazing around the pool or struggling to get going in the morning we did manage to squeeze in some trips:

Ribaute for the river swimming and a picnic on sun-baked rocks;
The lagoons at Peyriac and Bages and then onto Narbonne for beautiful buildings and cool alleyways;
Carcassonne for its rich history and stunning views of the citadel (but watch out for the tourist traps);
A vineyard in the Malepère AOC to learn about winemaking;
A wonderful stretch of sandy beach to the north of Gruissan.

Things that stick in my mind include a flock of pink flamingoes at the lagoons, wild boars' hooves nailed to doors at Bages, supping Minervois wine on the ramparts of Carcassonne while looking over to the vineyards it came from, the enormous fish in the deep water at Ribaute, the seemingly infinite stretches of sand down to Spain, finding a little lost dog for a neighbour, the very friendly locals tolerating our sad attempts at French, and the great big bear of a dog that is Bob, guarding us.

The week was rounded off with a good social evening at the local tapas bar (Chez Bembe) and a few hours in the beautiful city of Foix in the foothills of the pyrénées before our flight home.

“We miss you!”
Reviewed 8 September 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Back for our second year at Maison de la Roche. The kids were looking forward to it all year! Such a lovely mixture of exploring and time by the pool and relaxing under the trees. We spent more time in Fabrezan village this time, only a few minutes away and with really lovely restaurants. Our favourite beach at Leucate called us back and being only about 30 minutes to the coast, it meant lots of fantastic days by the sea. We explored a few towns we loved last time and added others; castles, picnics, markets, puppet shows and picturesque windy streets kept us all entertained. Honor is always on hand to offer info on local events, suggest restaurants and provide anything you might need for your stay. We all think 2 weeks at Maison de la Roche goes in a flash and is never enough! Enjoy!
