We were visiting my niece in Cambridge and after reading reviews we chose the Blue Ball Inn for a family gathering on a Monday sunny evening. We found a table but no one came over to greet us, the pub was fairly empty. We placed our order from the limited choice on the blackboard, staff not friendly.
The Chicken Balti (Jar of sauce poured over chicken).
Quiche was over powered with fatty cheese and chicken dish consisted of two thighs and a few green beans.
This is my first ever negative review, but on returning home my daughter was violently sick and myself with griping pains in stomach.
I phoned immediately to inform them of our condition and was unimpressed with their response.

Hi Elysia, very concerned to read about your experience, if you look at our reviews on this site you will note it is the first negative review we have received since we reopened the pub 2 years ago.
I would be very happy to discuss this with you if you want to pop in or call ?
Just in case you don't I have made a few comments below in response to your damming review;
-I am sorry you feel that we should provide a meet and greet service, as a small traditional pub we ask that customers come to the bar to place an order, as in the custom in a an english country pub.
-Our menu is very limited, as our website states we are first and foremost a pub that keeps excellent ales, we do offer a limited selection of dishes, these are cooked fresh every day and certainly we don't just pour a jar of sauce over anything. I am afraid the quiche does have cheese in it,I don't know of a recipe for quiche that doesn't, ours have a good quality english cheddar in them.
-Our manager told me of your conversation , and I am very satisfied with how he dealt with the situation . Many of our customers ate the same meals that evening and you are the only people to have complained, and also claim that 2 of you were ill from eating different dishes.
As I said, please call to discuss this you would like to do so.
regards
Toby

Had a lovely meal with friends and family in a private room at the Blue Ball Inn. There were 9 of us and the service was great and the food was very tasty and good value for money.

We were staying at Anstey Hall in nearby Trumpington and were attracted to the Blue Ball by the reviews on Trip Advisor. What a great pub! - lovely location, nice home-made well-priced food and good beer. We went on our first night and liked it so much we came back on our second. Yes - its small size means that the range of food is more limited than in many pubs but there was enough choice to keep us interested across two evenings. Our only suggestion would be to perhaps have a slightly wider range of puddings. We understand that they do accommodation too so that would be well worth looking into.

Hi Paul , thanks for taking the time to post such a great review, delighted you found us and came back for more !
We will look at the selection of puds, although we are very restricted by having such a small kitchen etc
Normally there is only a choice of one,but we will look at adding a 2nd.
Do come and try our new rooms, they have proved very popular since we opened the B&B side of the business a year ago.
cheers

We stopped by at The Blue Ball yesterday after a long day filming in Cambridge. What a delightful small pub, we were so pleased to find it. Un-pretentius, peaceful, very reasonably priced, great coffee, beer and food, individual decor and really friendly staff. When we return to the area we will be back.

It is a nice place but...... limited beer choice and even more limited foodchoices of average quality puts me off. Nice house fo locals, but not special.

Hi , many thanks for your visit and your review, its great that you find it a nice place-although we are a very small pub and hence we are limited on the number of beers we offer,
We always have 3 cask excellent ales on offer, plus a cider and the wonderful Adnams Dry Hop lager, and we recently added a draught stout.
Effectively this has doubled the number of beers on offer since we re-opened 2 years ago, and although we would like to offer more the cellar just isn't big enough.
We have also a very small kitchen so we remain a pub that sells some food rather then becoming a gastro eatery that sells some beer, and we are sorry you didn't find our selection of dishes enough, we will work to add to the menu where we can.
cheers
