“Not really an authentic market”
Review of Provencal Market

Visited the market in July 2014 and came back somewhat dissapointed. If Nyons is the capital of olive oil than you certainly wouldn't say that based on visiting the market. To us it was just another market. Nice to do once in a while but i wouldn't call this an authentic provencal market. There were too many vendors selling all kinds of rubbish imported from China or other countries/regions that have nothing to do with the Provence. A pity.

The Nyons Thursday morning market has everything! From mattresses to fresh-squeezed fruit-juice combos and Araucana eggs to BBQ roast chickens to fabrics, local fruit, vegetables, cheeses, homemade sausages, bread and pastries; paella to go, couscous, choucroute, pizza from the famous Provençal pizza trucks, honey, farm-fresh poultry and eggs, local lamb, fish, wristwatches, books, records, pottery, jewelry, flowers and plants, pocketbooks, rugs, CDs, clothes--new, handmade and used--you name it, they've got it. And then, do they have olives and olive oil! (Nyons is the olive capital of France.) And truffles in winter. One of the best markets in Northern Provence, especially since so many of the vendors are local farmers and producers. Friendly and happy with a relaxed air. Get there early, though, as parking is tight. The far side of the river and under the Pont de l'Europe have more places than the center of town, which is tight. Bring your wicker panier (basket), stock up, enjoy un café or lunch in one of the many cafés around the Place de la Libération and if you've any energy left, explore the Old Town. Lovely places to picnic with your goodies in the enormous park that runs along the River Eygues opposite the town swimming pool.

This is a must attend market for locals and tourists alike. Something for everyone. If you arrive early, you can place your paella order for pick up when you leave. Makes a fabulous lunch. Items we purchased included a tablecloth, saussison, a ring for my daughter, shoes, bread (2 actually because we ate one while walking), men's shorts and a box for lost teeth for the tooth fairy, or tooth mouse in France. What an eclectic, terrific, place!

What a wonderful market and town. If I had known how great it would be I would have arrived earlier. The fresh foods, the quality and variety of merchandise and the ambience make this an ideal market experience.

We bought a number of fresh food items and made a wonderful picnic for lunch. What a treat. Everything was so fresh and delicious.

We always spend at least one half day at a local market. In high season though the crowds can be horrendous - especially in Vaison and Carpentras. Much better to visit early or late season when the bulk of the visitors with families have left. Veg prices and sausages can cost a lot more than in the supermarkets so dont get too carried away! My last vist to a market was in Nyons in October - much more pleasant than the rugby scrum we faced in Vaison in August.
