Good base in Tanah Rata for visiting the Cameron Highlands

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 18 Sept 2017via mobile
Stayed at Arundina for one night visit to the Cameron Highlands. The accommodation is in a well-kept guest house a short walk from the main high street in town. The room was very clean and comfortable, and overall it was a good visit. We had a deluxe room and it was quite compact in size but served it's purpose for one night. I'd say it's slightly overpriced, but it seems that anywhere semi-decent in this area is at least £35+ per night. Breakfast was simple (toast, cereal and hot drinks) and they allowed us to spend an hour at the guest house after we checked out while we waited for our bus. Overall, I'd recommend it if you want a nice place to stay in the Cameron Highlands and are happy to pay a little extra for it.

Upon checking in, I was pleased to note that the request I had submitted earlier to have the bed pushed against the corner had been obliged and attended to. This attention to my request was most appreciated.

Was pleased that there were Ikea baby chairs available for use in the dining area.

Would be happy to stay there again. Thank you.

Suggestions for improvement: Would appreciate it if breakfast could be available earlier. 8am is a bite late for those who wish to get an early start to the day. 7am, if not 6.30am, would be better.

For
Quiet location to close to town
Spotlessly clean
Parking

Against
Not cheap for what it offers
Breakfast is basic and would have been okay but for the quality of the jam and juice etc. The impression were that they were the cheapest available. Orange juice should be made from oranges in my view.
Some confusion of the booking despite two emails send and received from them confirming the booking.
Breakfast orange juice rating 0.
Not bad but would not recommend.

I am surprised how a nice hotel like Arundina can employ such an unpleasant receptionist!! This lady has absolutely no sense of customer service and she gave us the impression that she loathed us being at the hotel. There were no pleasantries from her, not even a simple Good Morning when we walked in. During the check in process, she basically shoved a book at me and told me to fill in my details. Then she told us the house rules, (like no shoes in the house) but the tone she used was like we were prisoners in a camp who had to follow rules. Mind you, for a guest house, this place is not cheap. She then took us to our room, gave us some instructions and then walked away without even asking if we had any questions. I did not even realise she had walked away! The next day she was equally unpleasant. At breakfast, when we ask her about the water dispenser, once again in her rude tone she told us to read the instructions! There were a few more incidents, but I will leave it for now.

There was another lady on the second day (I think her name was Rose) who was so much more pleasant. It was a pity Rose was not on duty when we arrived. Our impression of the hotel would have been so different

The hotel (or guest house as it is called) is nice and clean. We took the deluxe room which is a good size and had a lovely private garden. Furnishings were nice and bed comfortable. Wifi was available. Bathroom was a decent size too, but the shower door was not sealing and the whole bathroom floor got wet when we showered. Towels were ok. Water heater does not really work, you won’t get hot water but just lukeward.

Location is good, so close to town yet not noisy or crowded. Parking is available.

As it is a guest house, there are no lifts, TV, air-conditioning etc. The bathroom only has one soap dispenser at the shower which is apparently 3-in-1, ie handsoap, shower gel and shampoo. There is a fan in the room but without a remote – you had to get it from the front desk. Likewise for a hair dryer – only available at the front desk. However, it’s a very simple dryer which overheated before my hair was dried!

Breakfast is a very simple affair. Toast, cereals, fruits and instant coffee, tea and some cordial drink.

I think it’s a pity the hotel has not invested in little things like a hair dryer in every room, better toiletries (no glasses in the bathroom to put your toothbrush), fan remotes, some drinking water, better breakfast etc. I think this hotel has a lot of potential to improve if it gave a bit more attention to things that would improve the quality of our stay.

Overall, the hotel is comfortable but our trip was completely spoilt by this very rude receptionist! She is a liability to this otherwise nice premise.

Room tip: The deluxe room are a better size.

Dear Jasszir88,

We deeply apologize for the unpleasant experience that marred an otherwise lovely stay you had at Arundina. Thank you for highlighting what we lack in service so that we may continue to improve, and train our team to serve our guests better.
We hope to serve you again in the future, and look forward that you would experience a much more memorable stay with us.

Regards,
Sita

The hotel is nice and clean with lots of flowers in the garden. It's located near the city center but in a calm area.
Tastefully decorated room with a good bed. Simple breakfast.
We were greeted when we arrived by a staff member who kindly helped us with reservations for the following day (inter-city bus and tour). However, the following day, we were disappointed by the attitude of the person on duty (breakfast, check-out...) who was very unpleasant.

We stayed in the smallest room which was more than adequate for two people. It was clean and very simple, with hot showers, large common use area, and a very convenient walk to town. It has a beautiful outdoor garden area to relax in as well. We would definitely stay there again during another visit!

Room tip: If you have more than a suitcase or backpack, I would choose one of the larger rooms.
