“A short sweet trip”

I always wanted to stay here as I have visited this place for scones for couple of times and yes we did it. I consider myself as a nature lover thus of course I am in love with this place. Yes, it needs major improvements but I just can't say no to the hidden old english cottage & overprice scones set. The environment & surrounding were forcing me to forget the flaws. I love the lobby, restaurant, reading room, outdoor tea break, stairs to the room, bird chippings... if you are a nature sucker who don't mind a basic room with old furniture, a small washroom & no linen please book this place & enjoy your stay.

The "chalet" is actually a rambling collection of Colonial era, mock Tudor buildings, once a school for the Children of British ex pats. It commands expansive views over the mountains and valleys of the Highlands and certainly retains the ambience and many artefacts from colonial times. It is an interesting and quirky place, but in many areas badly in need of renovations and repairs. There are signs that work is underway but, from rotting window frames with the glass about to fall out to garden furniture that should have been sent to the tip long ago, much more needs to be done. Older guests or those who are mobility impaired or lacking in fitness should avoid the rooms at the top of the site, which can only be approached up a very steep flight of steps. While parking is available, which is a plus, the area is very narrow and the surface appalling. While the staff are willing and courteous, there seemed to be too few, they appeared over worked and lacking that ready smile that makes any lodging seem warm and friendly.

Room Tip: The rooms at the top of the site have good views, but are only reached up a considerable number of s...

We went there with a group of 12 so we'ce book several rooms. One just located beside the dining area and another slightly up the hill. It was a good architecture, many old stuffs in it, had a minor renovation for the room beside the dining area but I can see the common area need some refresh too. It was a rainy evening and we couldn't walk to our room without getting wet. No breakfast prepared for the price we've paid. Not even a welcome smile I would say. However, the staffs are helpful when we asked them to rearrange our room so on and so forth. And yes, no internet at here. One can easily missed the hidden signboard at the roadside to the entrance. It's very dark when the night falls so for those who're on their feet better bring a torch with you if you're late. Nice garden with poor maintanance I would say. Nonetheless still a comfy stay at least. Thanks to the old Britist style environment.

We truly appreciate your constructive comments about our property and will surely take note to improve on those areas. Some of them have already been taken into account like we have free wifi in the rooms and in designated areas, more lighting for the walkway to the rooms on the hill and work is underway to have a covered walkway around the hotel linking the rooms to avoid getting wet in the rain.We would like to welcome you back to our property in the near future.Thank You...Bye

We are an older British couple who had this place recommended to us. We booked by 'phone and settled for the set menu (US$25 a head).

Chalet it is not - chateau is more like it. The hotel/restaurant is an 80 year old Tudor style treasure of a house, full of antiques and memorabilia. The owner, Bala, met us and gave us a short tour of the lovely gardens and the house before settling us in the lounge with a pre- dinner drink.

The meal was excellent - Indian chicken curry with all the trimmings, preceded by lightly battered vegetables and followed by a deliciously light crepe. The house wine was more than quaffable. And all served in a delightful, full of character part of the house with a log fire blazing in the hearth.

The place understates itself by its badly painted entrance at the main road. In our view this is a must visit restaurant if in the Cameron Highlands.

Well, after a hectic fishing trip with family at Mersing-Johor, I thought it was a good idea for a short weekend gateway to Cameron Highland (about 2.5hr drive from Kuala Lumpur) to soothe those sunburns. We reached Cameron at about 1600hrs and immediately scouting for accomodation. As we past Brinchang to Tanah Rata, my mind was telling me to turn right to Bala's. The road leading to Bala's require some manuever skill especially on the tight and narrow turning. Parking is yet another precision skill. Beside these, everything should be fine. Went in to the reception and was offered a suite (sunset) for Rm300.00 without breakfast. As we walked to the room located at the 1st floor, the corridor gives an impression of comtemporary comfort and veranda itself is a garden of eden. The view from the room was spectacular with greenery and hills basically everywhere plus the cool air breezing to your face. We then spend sometime at the garden (of course yet another spectacular sight) for some tea and scones. Last but not least, the chalet staff are all friendly and helpful. This is the Cameron that one should experience, enjoy and relax.

Room Tip: Be friendly and with a smile will get more than you bargained.

The "hotel", which is expensive for the service received, has a charming architecture but it is in need of a renovation.
The service needs to be improved. With the exception of the security guard who wasa charming fellow and waited for us until 2 am to check-in, the rest of the staff are barely helpful.

We liked the gardens but unlikely to go back due to the poor service and high prices of the rooms. We booked the Raffles Suites as we were told that they were the only rooms available, but upon arrival, we noted other rooms that were available. We did not receive any special treatment / service despite the higher rate for the Raffles Suites. We had icy cold water for our showers.

We only came to Bala's for the afternoon tea and scones, Yes it was the expensive scone set we had BUT it was worth it. Just to relax in the garden and being from England, I felt like I was in the countryside. Plus the scones were worth it! Hopefully will be back soon :)
