“Great staff, beautiful hostel!”
Reviewed 19 June 2011

Charming, owner-run place at the end of the Queen Charlotte Track. Newly-renovated. Absolutely beautiful. Nice enough for a honeymoon. Very friendly staff. Quiet; comfortable beds. Small hostel. A real retreat!

We were undecided about staying an extra day in Anakiwa at the end of our walk to recover, or returning to Picton - SO glad we stayed in Anakiwa! Arriving here at the end of 70km was like coming home - a beautiful sunny lounge area, guitars and books, wifi, beautifully airy bedrooms, sun deck and hammocks, and kayaks to paddle around the sound. We spent a truly blissful day enjoying cold, crisp Queen Charlotte Track Special Reserve Sav Blanc and relaxing our tired muscles. Tanya and Shane are simply lovely, and we wished we could have stayed with them (and the dogs!) longer. Great place, perfect end to a perfect hike. Thank you! xx

Great location for the start of the Queen Charlotte track. The kitchen was well stocked and the ensuite bedroom was small but comfortable. The only thing we didnt like was coming out of the bedroom straight into the lounge/diner. But it was excellent value for money and would definitely recommend Anakiwa Backpackers to anyone.

This place ticked all the boxes for a good hostel including nice location, cosy warm rooms (mmm electric blankets), clean kitchen with decent facilities and a nice compact lounge/eating area. Great to chill out in for a few days and use as a base for the Queen Charlotte Track or for water activities close nearby. If you've got a car its a great base to explore further afield or you can connect with water taxi, wine tours etc. Its a nice place to meet with fellow travelers and there are only a few rooms to its never going to feel too busy or cramped. Its also personal and feels a lot more homely then the large commercial hostels do. No TV!!! I love it. If you had a TV you wouldn't spend so much time chatting to your fellow travelers and you might as well be at home! Its a small place so you'll get to know each other quickly. Wireless Internet was handy (20mb free)

Outside are some lovely places to relax and enjoy some wine over looking the bay. There is an excellent onsite coffee shop (not sure if its year round) and some good kayaks to borrow and explore the sounds. The location is only a few meters from a stony beach and you can then be on the Queen Charlotte track in literally seconds! Great for biking or walking tours and treks further afield.

We sadly missed the hosts themselves but hope to return soon for a kayak trip. Some locals we spoke to said they were nice people who had invested a lot in the hostel and it really showed. We did a Kayak trip from the nearby Sea Kayak Adventures which was very awesome. They also spoke highly of this hostels owners. Anakiwa has a nice sense of community that way. So no complaints from someone that's stayed in hundreds of hostels but only writes to review the really good ones!

We stayed here in February 2011 and were already talking about returning within a few hours of arriving! It's an idyllic spot and right next to the end/start of the Queen Charlotte track which offers stunning walking. The owners Shane & Tanya are both very friendly and helpful - they let you use kayaks free of charge and can help out with loads of other stuff to do around there. We had the one bed seaview apartment which was great and fantastic value for money and great views!. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and would advise you to stay at least 3 nights, it's so relaxing. Not the place to come if you're looking to party but all the better for that. We can't wait to go back!

This place is a great little find. It is right at the end of the Queen Charlotte Track, with great views of the sounds. It is a very peaceful place, great for relaxing or using as a base for hiking. The hostel is more like a B&B. The main building only has 2 bedrooms, there's a 4-bed share right to the side. We stayed in the room with ensuite, I can highly recommend it. It is brand new, immaculate, light & airy. The room is big, with a fantastic matrass, enough hooks to hang your clothes on, a big, nice bathroom (power shower, hot water, and no icky shower curtain!) and to top it off a private balcony. We loved it. The open kitchen is a bit small, but as there are not many guests, absolutely adequate. Cozy living room, and an outside bbq. Make sure you don't get the 4-bed share though. We had to stay there on our last night, as they were booked full. This is newly renovated too, but very cramped. The hosts are super friendly, making you feel like a guest versus backpacker. They also sell a great local Chardonnay! The place may be a bit off the beaten track & slightly more expensive, but we felt like we were stayingin a lovely, secluded B&B, not a hostel. Would happily recommend this to any more mature traveller!

Ok, we did not listen to the reviews and booked only one night. Don't make the same mistake..... This place is excellent with great hosts. Don't expect a backpacker place, it is rather a B&B, so it's a really good value. The hosts are enthusiastic, happy to share their local knowledge, and they are so flexible. We decided in the morning that we wanted to do some walking, and they took us with powerboat to the first stop and we could walk back.
They have 3 kayaks that you can use free of charge, we did that as well.
In the evening you can walk to see the glowworms in the forest, its cca 10 mins walk.
The breakfast was basic but alright, and i appreciate that we could get breakfast without pre-ordering it, even at a late notice.
Great place indeed, I definitely recommend it. The location is also superb, right at the entrance of the Queen Charlotte Track. The house itself is nicely renovated, huge kitchen and living room, and very sunny bedroom (with a super-comfortable bed in the 'old library room' - had a better sleep than in my own bed).
You can also enjoy the hammocks in the garden, due to our short stay unfortunately we did not have the occasion to try them.
