“Heaven on earth.”
Reviewed 30 March 2013

This is the most wonderful place, more of hotel than a backpackers hostel. The surroundings are breathtaking and, being at the end of the road, so peaceful.
We received a really warm welcome from Tanya and were pleased that we were up graded from a double bedroom to the self contained annexe. This was very well equipped, spotless and comfortable. Shayne and Tanya are both really engaging and made us feel like long lost friends and that nothing was too much trouble for them. On their advice we walked up the track to see the glowworms then down to the jetty to catch the phosphorescence.
Our only regret was that we were unable to book for the two nights we wanted. It is justifiably popular and I imagine that you need to book way in advance if you have specific dates you want.
I hope that we may make it back to this charming place one day.

This place was such a great find; it is right next to the beautiful Queen Charlotte Track and the views from the jetty are unbelievable. It is such a homely, relaxing place to stay, with hammocks, free tea/coffee, a barbecue and a really cute dog! If you go onto the jetty at night the stars are awesome. The free kayak hire was also one of the best things as it is a fun way to see the sounds. The owners were so so friendly and helpful with everything- I stayed five days and could easily have stayed five weeks!!!!

I stayed one night at this wonderful place, and didn't want to leave. It is so clean, well appointed rooms, comfy beds, and has a great location next to the Queen Charlotte Sounds Track, beside a beautiful bay. Small and homely. But most of all Tanya and Shayne run this place wonderfully and offer such a warm welcome and service above and beyond. It was so appreciated, they go out of their way to make you feel welcome and ensure you have everything you need, and are a great source of information on the area. I totally recommend this place if you want a relaxing and comfortable stay in a beautiful part of NZ. It is the best place I have stayed in, in NZ and one of the best in the world. If I can I would love to come back.

Gorgeous accomodation in a fab location!
Called a backpackers, but that's a little modest! It's beautiful and the nicest backpackers we have stayed in!
Tanya and Shayne have basically opened up their home and it really is a home! Lovely open and light lounge with a clean and well equiped kitchen (they even have food and meals for sale if you dont have any of your own food!). They are fab hosts and helped us out loads! They have kayaks and bikes for use, which is great as the accomodation is literally on the lake and all the equipment to go with - new wetsuits, lifejackets.....

If you are planning on the doing Queen Charlotte Track then is perfect as the track ends at their door!

Check out the gloworms!

We stumbled upon it purely by luck and if we ever end up in Anakiwa again, we will be back!

Thanks for an amazing stay!

I totally agree with the other glowing reviews! We just loved this place and will definitely be coming back sometime soon. The location is just beautiful and the accommodation itself is clean, tidy, comfortable and well-priced. What really makes it special though are Tanya and Shayne, who are such warm and welcoming natural hosts. Within a day it felt like home and it was so hard to leave when the time came to go.

Our stay at Anakiwa Backpackers was awesome. The hosts, Shane and Tanya, are wonderful people and talented at making their guests feel at home and comfortable. The place is cosy, clean, and quiet, and the possible activities are abundant. Check out the biolumenescent critters!

Another classic end-of-the-road Kiwi lodge with a superb location at the start of the QCT. My wife and I hiked out one the track one evening and it was beautiful. There are kayaks available (for free, unlike most lodges) and it's an easy 1 or 2 km paddle to a nearby beach, passing nesting shags and scenic coves. The rooms and kitchen have everything one would need and are very clean. Upon arrival, and with no prompting, we were upgraded to a room with a private bath and a small balcony. The hosts were very accommodating and great fun to talk with. Great value, highly recommended!
