“My Birthday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2014

We had a lovely couple of nights at this Hotel, the food was very good and they did,nt mind doing
an alternative if there was some thing you wanted,I love puddings and there was a lot of ice cream
on menu which I am not fond of (in Febuary) so they made me treacle tart!
The next night was my birthday and again they made something different, also they bought a cup cake
with a candle in it! I did mention it was my birthday when booking, but only because its the day before valentines and they might be busy, but they remebered.
Spoke to Ruth Watson when booking and she was lovely, you can tell a woman designed the room by the little extra touches.

Room Tip: We had good house double which is in main building overlooking road which is very quiet and has nice...

Thank you very much for your kind review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your birthday stay and for pointing out that we do try to be helpful when it comes to the menu. (By the way, there are always 4 or 5 non-ice cream desserts on the a la carte as well as two flavours of home-made ice cream and two flavours of home-made sorbet.) We hope you will return to enjoy the delights of Orford on another occasion.

We had a wonderful stay, dinner and breakfast.
What can really make the difference to me when having a meal in a restaurant, apart from cleanliness, atmosphere, ambience and excellent food and wine, is the service. This can make me give it a '10 out of 10', and until now this has only happened abroad in France or in The Netherlands.
Our dinner at The Crown was perfect, a missed fork was spotted and replaced without me having to ask for it (a small thing I know but it makes all the difference to me), there was no loud/intrusive background music and the atmospheric lighting and other customers made for a lovely atmosphere. The service was excellent and unobtrusive.
Our room was lovely and warm and spotlessly clean with a nice view.
There was a good selection tea and coffee, very nice biscuits and fresh milk. The toiletries and soap were very nice. The selection of DVDs was excellent.
We had the feeling of always being able to ask for anything ( well, almost anything).
So I give our whole experience a '10 out of 10', thank you!

We are very grateful for your delightful review of the C&C. I am not entirely sure we deserve 10 out of 10, but it's nice to think that occasionally we can hit the heights. Most of all, though, it's lovely to hear that you appreciated and enjoyed so many aspect of your stay from the food and service to the toiletries and lack of background music - the latter always being a contentious subject! (But I agree with you, which is why we don't have any.) We very much hope that a return visit will live up to expectations! Thank you again for your review.

We have stayed at the hotel many times over the past 7/8 years and always had a fantastic experience. I can't praise the place enough! The ambience is very relaxed but efficient and the staff are always friendly and smiling. Being veggie, we often have a problem in restaurants and hotels with little choice, but the Crown & Castle has over the past few years introduced a separate veggie menu with a good variety of both starters and main courses and we have always eaten really well. The wine list is consistently interesting and the staff are always happy to recommend a good bottle to accompany your meal. We have stayed in the main house and the suite (for a special birthday once) and all rooms are generously proportioned with very comfortable beds and great showers. This part of Suffolk is great walking country, pretty flat but never boring, so if you find yourself in this area, the Crown & Castle is THE place to stay and eat.

Room Tip: The best house doubles are the best option with fabulous views over the rooftops of the village with...

We not only thank you for the frequency of your visits but for telling the great wide world about the Crown and Castle. It really is very kind of you and we appreciate it. We are so pleased we come up to snuff in the hospitality, food, wine and accommodation stakes because that, after all, is what a decent hotel is all about. We look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future.

We had wanted to visit this hotel for some time having visited Orford Castle twice before. As our wedding anniversary is in February we took advantage of the offer available and arrived on a Saturday afternoon. We had a very friendly welcome and were shown to our 'best terrace' room. Really lovely - spacious, huge bed, fresh milk and delicious cookies, and the bathroom... just wow! Everything you could possibly want was there.
Having watched the rugby, we went over to the hotel for dinner, again were made to feel very welcome. Nice touch that Mrs. Watson called us by name and took our order, advising us on a couple of unfamiliar ingredients. The food was very, very good. Love the comments on the wine list, made us both chuckle.
Breakfast the next morning was delicious with a very good choice - not often everything is ordered rather than helping yourself to juice, fruit, etc - service again was friendly and swift. The only one comment was the very large pieces of ginger in the compote (2 of these) which were really not very nice. (Feel a bit mean mentioning it)
Dinner on the Sunday night again was lovely, topped off with a cupcake complete with candle to celebrate our anniversary. Breakfast on the Monday set us up for the journey home.
Really good to see the hotel busy, even on a cold, wet Sunday evening - loved it all!

Room Tip: No 31 really lovely with small private terrace

Your very generous review has brought a broad smile to our faces. We are thrilled that you enjoyed so many elements of your stay, from the welcome to the room and food. Thank you, too, for being so specific (fresh milk, huge bed, etc.) as it gives putative guests a really good idea of what to expect. As for the big lumps of ginger in the compote, again thank you for pointing this out. I have just spoken to our head chef who, oddly enough, had just been honing the recipe - we have agreed that in future the ginger will go in a muslin bag with the rest of the flavourings. (We never dismiss positive feedback.) I hope we will be able to welcome you back on a future occasion and, in the meantime, thank you again.

Our first visit to The Crown and Castle and it will be the first of many!
The staff are so friendly and service impeccable., attentive without being intrusive, an art in itself.
The restaurant menu is imaginative and the portion sizes are just right.

The garden room was lovely and everything thought of, loved Ruth's quirky comments in the folder and the soap smells almost good enough to eat

Thank you for a fantastic stay.!

Room Tip: We had a Best Garden Twin room, very nicely appointed and easy for us to unload and load the car...

What a nice, succinct, complimentary review - thank you so much for bothering to do this. We are very pleased you enjoyed the service, room and food, not to mention the wonderful Arran grapefruit soap - always a hit with out guests.

I am sorry the room took a little while to warm up. We'll make sure to turn the heating up high on your next visit, so that doesn't happen. Thank you again for your review.

I have long been an admirer of Ruth Watson and have enjoyed her unique newsletters, she runs this small hotel in the beautiful village of Orford in a similar style. We were given a surprise weekend as a gift and rang to ask if we could possibly take our two dogs with us. 'Of course, we love dogs' was the reply. What a lovely welcome for them, their own towels, dog treats and a special welcome note to them with some house rules - all very reasonable. We liked our chalet room, but the dogs only came in with us at night, after they had dried off from their 12 mile walk along the seawall towards Aldeburgh in glorious January sunshine. The dogs had the most lovely time and so did we. The Parlour is a really great place for a celebration and we enjoyed a lovely evening with 8 friends on Saturday night, food was delicious. The no mobile phone rule in public areas was holding, but perhaps at breakfast couples could be given two newspapers, so both can read at the same time, rather than one watching the other read, I did begin to wish I'd got my iphone with me :-)

Room Tip: If you have dogs with you the garden rooms are ideal.

We are so pleased you all enjoyed your stay with us. Thank you for the nice comments about the food and dog comforts (and the excellent walking for both two and four-legged creatures). I am sorry you were not offered another copy of the free Independent (i) newspaper as we always have loads of them. Please just ask next time – anything rather than use an iPhone! Or you could have a conversation, although David would beat anyone around the brains who tried to converse with him over breakfast and perhaps you feel the same!

Christmas, New Year and any other time of year, it truly never disappoints.

Quite apart from the excellent food and accommodation, you would be very hard put to better the service anywhere - attentive without being intrusive in any way, nothing is ever too much trouble and with things suggested before you have even thought you might like them!

To arrive is to unwind! Look no further - stay here!
