“Better than expected.”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

I must admit that we were unsure whether to go in or not when we first arrived in Orford but we asked a few people coming out and they said it was worth a visit. The castle has very little furniture or displays inside and to get the most out of the visit, it is very important to use the audio set guide, which was very informative and has been excellently put together. It really helped to make the experience and time spent there worthwhile.

“Amazing castle”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

Orford Castle is almost unique in England in that it is only one of two castles that feature a cylindrical keep design (the other being Conisbrough Castle in South Yorkshire). Built by Henry II in the 12th century to counter the ambitions of the powerful Earls of Norfolk in East Anglia. Inside the castle, you can visit three main levels (basement, middle floor and great hall, which also features an exhibition of the castle and surrounding area). There are also lots of passageways and chambers to explore - great for the kids. It's also possible to climb up to the roof level with superb views over the Suffold coast (Orford Ness) and countryside. Unfortunately, there is no access to the three roof turrets, but you can go inside them. An audio guide is available from the shop if desired, but I would recommend just buying the EH guidebook (£2.99).

Facilities at the castle are confined to a small shop. If anyone needs the toilet, there are public toilet facilities in the village (next to smoke house).

“Good half day outing”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Orford Castle is a good way to spend a couple of hours, listening to the tour at your own pace and taking in the atmosphere of the castle.
I would not recommend this place for a whole day out - we were only there an hour or two.
If you want a longer day out and want to go to an English Heritage place, try Framlingham Castle.

“Bring your stair legs!”
Reviewed 2 August 2014

Beautiful keep with lots of medieval toilets and lots of stairs! Fantastic views but Only for those energetic enough. There is parking, but it was full of people eating at a nearby expensive restaurant. I'm sure if they had a parking attendant they would make as much charging for parking as they do from Visits to the castle.

“Historical Treat”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

only the keep remains - it's important because of its shape - especially designed not to be easily undermined in the reign of Henry II. Great views towards Orford Quay from the top. Modest museum within. A lot of stairs to climb!
