“good location, bad condition”
Reviewed 11 February 2014 via mobile

The only good thing i can say about that place is a good location. Anything else sucks. We payed the breakfest, but we never ate it, because the restaurant looked like unclean and sometimes there wasn't breakfest serwed at all. Rooms are unclean, full of ants and sometimes even crockroaches. Toilet spill on the floor and does not flush properly. Reseptionist was rarely there and the place was over all in bad condition.

We have booked 2 rooms in Dec. 2013. There was in the hotel decription a Photo of a restaurant with seawiev, We like to have breakfast and look out of the sea, but the restaurant was not a part of our hotel. The breakfast was very poor, only 2 pies of toast, 2 pies of ham and a fried eg. Tee or coffie was usually served after the breakfast was eat, the coffie was not good. It was the hotelboss who served the breakfast many times and 2 of my gests only eat breakfast 1 time, because his fingernails look like he just have repair his car and there was very dirty on the floor. The restaurant open 07.00, but I never see the serving of breakfast started before 07.45, you must wait very long time. One morning I have waited long time, the servent have served for 3 gests, after 10 minutes he take it out again and came quickly and served for me. It was ofcource totally cold and unacceptabel to serve breakfast which have been served for other gests in 10 minutes.
The rooms whithout wiev, was marginal with a TV and fridge. The shower was ok, only cold Water in the zink. Internet was ok. Cleaning of the rooms only 3 times a week. We must buy toiletpaper and soap more times.

We just returned from Krabi and stayed in Baanlay for 4 days. We were looking for a cheap, yet clean place with aircon, soft bed and fridge. We got just that and were very happy to pay what we did. We only slept and showered there, but that is what we needed. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we felt safe. Thankyou Baanlay, we will see you again as we live in Phuket.

I stayed here for a few days in June, and of all the SE Asia places I have stayed over five weeks, this was, by a long margin, the very worst place of all. When I checked in, staff reassured me that I would be able to use a computer at the reception 24 hours a day. This turned out to be a big fat lie, and I had to use an internet caffe nearby. When explaining my disappointment, I was treated in the most rude manners and ruthlessly "invited" to go away. I latter presented my case to the hotel owner who gave me a little discount off my bill - but it did not pay for the incredible rude manners of the hotel staff. Come here if you want: plenty of insect bites during the night, loud air conditioning, insects scrolling your room, electricity randomly switched off in the day you will check out, useless staff who must be too underpaid to actually care for the guests, dirty linning. in one line: never again, thank you!

I suspect the other reviewers here were expecting something a little closer to the $300USD/night ocean view resorts that fill the area, but my wife and I were very happy with our stay. The room was spotless and included blinding-white sheets, the mini-fridge was full stocked with an assortment of water (2 free bottles, replaced each day), pop and beer. The pop & beer wasn't free, but was the same price you would pay at a mini-mart (as opposed to the $12USD for a bag of nuts you would find in a corporate-run hotel). The satellite television was handy after a long day at the beach as well, even if the only English channel was BBC. The free wi-fi was a very nice touch and we took full advantage of it. The breakfast was indeed quite sparse, however the hotel itself has a only little cafe in the front and doesn't claim to be a full restaurant. The staff was quite pleasant and helpful.

The main strip along the beach was primarily for shoppers, and was very full of affluent tourists, many of whom had children in tow. The selection of restaurants was quite good and the seafood dishes were delicious - perhaps a little pricey, but relative to home they were still extremely cheap.

The 'beach' in Ao Nang isn't really a beach for swimming/sunbathing but rather a landing spot for water taxis. There are *spectacular* beaches only ten minutes away that could be reached by taxi for only 80B. You can buy a return ticket to one or a combination of beaches and return whenever you felt like it (they prefer to travel full so we had to wait 15 minutes for a taxi for fill up with other people)

If you're looking for very quiet, clean place to hang your hat for a few days Baanlay Bungalows may be a good choice. There's no swimming pool, no ocean view and you won't wake up to the sound of waves crashing on the beach but you can find that in Ao Nang if you really want it and don't mind pay 5-10 times as much as you would for Baanlay Bungalows.

The " bungalows " are just rows of concrete rooms adjoining each other, and looking at each other. Our room was dingy, dark and dirty. There was no furniture, not even a chair. We were there for four days and nothing was ever cleaned. The rooms are at the back of an Indian restaurant, and down an alley way from the beach. The beach there is full of longtail boats and you had to walk right to the other end of the beach to swim. The breakfast is set out on a tiny table in reception and you have to try and find somewhere to sit out front to eat, where there is not enough tables, and it smells, and there are cars etc. The staff were miserable and very sour faced. They couldnt care less about you at all. It was the worst place we stayed at in Thailand. I got severe food poisoning in Ao Nang and the fact that Baanlay bungalows was near the pharmacies was the only good thing about it !! The staff showed no concern or help, and when we asked for a clean sheet after 3 days of fever it was literally thrown at us !! It was overpriced and thoroughly awful. Ao nang was like the costa del sol, expensive, souless and like Baanlay bungalows, somewhere to avoid at all costs !!

My partner & I stayed here for 4 nights in a double air conditioned room. It was reasonably spacious, had cable tv (which was broken for about 24 hours then fixed), comfortable large bed, hot water a minibar & a lockable drawer instead of a minisafe. It was a concrete bungalow style in a row with 2 others attached & looked on to more rooms across the way, the small area this site was on meant all rooms were like this with no real view.

The breakfast was very limited, there was tea/coffee/water/juice out along with pineapple & watermelon & bread/butter/jam. When you came down they'd ask you how you wanted your eggs (fried/scrambled/omlette) then they came back with them with 1 (tasty) sausage. Fine for a short period of time but boring otherwise.

The restaurant Baanlay Thai Kitchen was on the beachside though when I say beach, most of Ao Nang's beaches around here were lucky if they were a couple of meters wide stretch of sand.

There are plenty of shops & restaurants nearby so the accomodation is in a good location, we felt it wasn't worth the money though but then we didn't really enjoy Ao Nang as a resort itself.

  • Liked — plenty of restaurants, shops & bars nearby
  • Disliked — in a souless resort
