We wanted a quiet place for the two of us to wind down after the hectic pace of Patong. This was perfect, we took the advice and asked for a room at the back, no road noise at all. Good breakfast delivered to our private balcony each morning (upstairs is MORE private). Fabulous Thai decor. Easy walk into town, cheap tuk tuk back. Incredibly friendly staff, no request was too much. Cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.

This is a very friendly hotel with great rooms. We came jan/feb 2011 with our 9 month old baby. The staff were very friendly and made a huge fuss over our little boy. The room was vast and apart from a slight musty smell could not be faulted. The breakfasts were fantastic. Overall value was good. The main downer was that my wife's mobile phone was stolen from the room. While we were there a traveller had his camera stolen loosing all his photos. He was naturally gutted. Security obviously a problem so use safe at all times when not in the room. The hotel is some way from the main drag. This was a minor irritation but enough to mean that we are trying somewhere else when we return to Ao Nang in a few weeks time.

Loved every minute. The staff at this small hotel make you feel very very welcome. We only stayed here for 2 nights but i could easily have stayed much longer. Nothing was to much trouble all staff never stoped smiling.
Rooms were great very authentic which is something that Thailand is losing by the bucket load, every new hotel that is built seams to be of boutique design (not the reason why i go to Thailand)
We were in rooms 9 and 10 which were fab. Yes maybe they are looking tired but give me that everyday as opposed to a new shiny design with no character.
Great breakfast we went for the Thai option and were totally satisfied.
If ever i am in that part of Thailand i will certainly be stopping there again.
Yes there is a walk to the beach and the shops but it is easily doable and if you can,t
t then get a tuk tuk there are plenty to be had and they are cheap enough.
There are 2 pools and good service for Beers and cocktails.
Give it a go.

We chose the Cha Wan because of the good reviews on trip advisor. After staying in Thailand for two weeks in several hotels in this price range this hotel was definitely the worst.

Good points:
Breakfast was good and also the one lunch we had at the restaurant was very good quality.
The hotel is small and cozy with just 10 rooms around the nice pool area.
Just 10 minutes walk to crowded Ao Nang and Tuk Tuks always in the area (two large hotels right next door to Cha Wan, so there are always Tuk Tuks waiting up front).

What bothered me:
1. The noise. Rooms 1-6 are right be the road that goes uphill in this part. I have read about the road going by, but did not expect it to be that loud. We were only able to sleep with our ear plugs. The terrace we wanted to use but it was so loud we could not talk to each other. Also the breakfast we ate at the restaurant even though they bring it to the terrace. But we couldn't stand it there.
2. A/C not working properly. The A/C in our room was not okay. The thermostat was obviously broken so after a few minutes the room was cooled down to a freezer. We complained at the reception, but all she told us was to turn on the A/C when we go to bed. The english of the reception was very poor (also the worst I have experienced in Thailand), so I wasn't sure if she did not understand the problem right. So we had the choice of sleeping in a fridge and most certainly get sick or sleep by what felt like 40 degree C. This is why I book a room with A/C - to regulate it to a temperature where I can sleep at 20 degree C. Not here.
3. The english skills of reception are really bad. Besides the A/C experience they also had a hard time explaining how we can get to places. And were really trying to push us into booking a taxi with them. When we asked for cheaper alternatives to get somewhere they were reluctant to tell us (or did not understand us?).
4. Cleanliness. The room is clean at first sight. It smells a little bit moldy, but it was not too bad. But in the morning when the sun shines in it was obvious that they hardly ever dust the blinds that are in front of all the windows. The ones in the bathroom were covered in thick dust.

So all in all we did not have the experience we expected and we would not recommend that hotel. Even though I have not been to other hotels in Ao Nang there must be better options for that price.

The grounds of the resort are nice but the rooms are getting a bit dated. The walk to the beach is about 10min which isn't an issue as you get a bit of excercise going to the beach. Beware of rooms 1 - 4 as they're next to the busy road which will be bothersome at night when you're trying to sleep. I asked about moving but they didn't seem to interested in my request. I was here 6 days so I ended up using ear plugs to drown out the noise.

I would recommend this place if you can get rooms 5 and above, otherwise look for somewhere else.

Keep starting this review and then deleting it, as we had very mixed feelings about Cha Wan. We picked it solely on the reviews on here and Trip Advisor has always been spot on before but......
First the good points;
The lovely location with a few rooms grouped around the two tiny pools and fish pools gave it a hidden hideaway feel and plenty of shade for those not seeking a heavy tan. It was pleasant being away from the hustle of the main street and we were quite happy with the 10 minute walk up and down the hill.
The breakfast was excellent and the plate of fresh tropical fruit was the highlight; always fresh and juicy and nicely chilled. Evening meals were good too, with a range of Thai and Western at a reasonable price.
The staff were charming, but then they are everywhere we visited in Thailand.
On the other hand, our room was noisy and the patio was a bit fume polluted from the vehicles struggling up the steep hill right next to us. The room was a little grubby here and there and the maintenance was poor in places.
And beware of the bottled water; it does say clearly on the mini bar price list that it's 45 baht a bottle, I just never thought to look as I've never, ever been charged for a couple of bottles of drinking water in a Thai hotel where you need it even to brush your teeth. Not a huge expense once we'd twigged, but irritating, especially when we had a few odd bottles we'd brought with us.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the road. Buy water for 15 baht from the shop on the hill on your way in.

This place really deserves the number 1 spot. It was an absolute pleasure to stay here. Firstly, the staff were falling over themselves to be helpful. On the whole we found the customer service in Thailand to be dreadful but this was the exception.
Secondly, the rooms were of a high standard (we stayed in 5 other hotels around Thailand at a similar cost or more and Cha Wan had by far the nicest rooms including a lovely bathroom and balcony).
Thirdly, there were only 4 people staying there (despite it being number 1 hotel on trip advisor) so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. We were the only people in the restaurant and had the pool to ourselves.
Lastly, the location was fine. I was worried about staying here as it wasn't on the beach but it didn't make much difference. It was a 10 minute walk down the road. I was also worried about staying in Ao Nang as the Lonely Planet guide slags it off a bit but I really enjoyed it. Loads of restaurants and bars to choose from. Very suitable for youngish couples. Had a brilliant time there. If you can get a room (there are only 10 I think) then snap it up!!

Room Tip: Both rooms we had were lovely.
