“Simple and adequate”
Reviewed 6 October 2011

I have just back from Krabi and had stayed in The Small from 2nd till 6th Oct.

The Small is a new hotel (3 stars), with her sister hotel - Hotel La Praya (5 stars) jus opposite the small alley (2 mins walking).

Location: Great location, located right at the road junction between Aonang Beach and Nooparrat Beach. It is about 8-10 mins walk to Aonang Beach and 5 mins to Nooparrat Beach.
It is the first hotel at the small alley which i feel great as it is easier to find and nearer to town. Many other well known hotels are located at this small alley as well, Red Ginger (next to The Small), Apasari Hotel, Ananta Burin, Buri Tara Hotel and Aree Tara Hotel. Google map and tripadvisor map is not that accurate. Try to search for the other hotels instead of The Small.

Arriving from airport: It is easy to find and i reach there via Airport shuttle bus (tell the counter staff where you wanna go, they know about The Small) and the bus will stop right at the road junction. It will cost 150baht and journey takes around 50mins - 1 hour.

I have stayed in the standard studio room. Check in and check out process was easy and smooth. No free upgrade despite low season. Room is clean, equipped with new furniture and spacious with minimalist design. Water pressure very weak and hot water is inadequate for rain shower. There was a blackout on my last day for about 2 hours due to rainy season ( whole Krabi town had electric cut). First time experienced it in hotel (no back up power support).

Daily breakfast was below average - good varieties but taste was a bit bland for me (fried rice, fried noodle, corn/chicken soup/porridge, bread and pastry, egg corner, salad bar, sausages and ham, fried vege, fritters). Food are supplied from her sister hotel including the room services menu.

During my stay, the upper deck pool and jacuzzi is under renovation. So not luck for good swim there. The only pool available for swimming currently will be at ground floor connecting to the pool access room. This pool is small but beautifully designed. Hotel La Praya offers 3 bigger pools and is open for occupants in The Small.

In a nut shell, I'm glad that I had stayed in The Small with the promo package: Stay 3 pay 2. It was an enjoyable simple vacation although not much activities during rainy season.

stay there for 3 nights and love everything about it. the room is big and clean, service is excellent, pool is nice, location is good, price is affordable.....what more do you expect really? some ppl are not willing to pay alot for accommodation and yet are never satisfied and expect too much from it. though the hotel is not right at the beach but it's close enough, just about 5mins walk. I'd prefer to stay a little further away from all the attraction for a quiet night sleep and I had 3 excellent nights of sleep (never had that for a long time). didn't bother to book room with breakfast coz I read a lot of negative comment about it but not to worry, just around the corner you could get cheap and tasty street food or you could just buy some of those really good sandwiches at 7eleven. Some restaurants offer cheap breakfast as well. The hotel has nothing much to offer but why bother, you're in Krabi....the attraction is out there. Am going back there.

Introduction
Was looking for a short & cheap getaway for the weekend to celebrate my partner's birthday & was initially deciding between Bali or Krabi. In the end we decided on Krabi because the airfares (from Singapore) is much cheaper & we heard there aren't much activities there except for the island trips which is good because we wanted to having a relaxing holiday.

We first heard the hotel from a travel agency & it was introduced as a "new wing" to the Krabi LA Playa Resort. The name given was The Small Beach Resort. I tried googling for info on the resort & was frustrated as it turns out the hotel is also known as The Small, The Small Hotel or The Small Beach Hotel, so for those who wants to get more info on the resort I suggest trying the different name aliases.

Booking
We had booked a package that includes 3 nights stay, a city tour plus the 4 islands tour at a very good price. However, 3 days prior to the trip the agent called us up to inform the studio rooms we booked were full & we had to top up an additional S$70 per pax to upgrade to the pool side view. I was very annoyed at such tactics because from what I read from the reviews here & elsewhere, if they ran out of a type of rooms, they will give free upgrades (especially when we had paid the sum in full in advance) As I did not believe they ran out of rooms, I went to Agoda to check out & true enough there were still rooms available & they were having a last minute sale & I could get the room per night at a much cheaper rate though its without breakfast (which I heard is lousy anyway) & without all the add-on options. After more research online, even adding on the extras will cost me less, I decided to cancel from the agent & booked online.

Checking In
Travelling in to Krabi was easy & straight forward to their modern International Airport. Initially avoiding all the "taxi touts", I soon realised that they have standardised fares throughout Krabi & to prevent touts & over charging which is really a good thing (though I realised there are exceptions to the "fixed" price) Fare to Ao Nang Town is 600 baht by Taxi & 150 baht by airport bus. Their taxis are just standard saloon cars with no taxi decals. Checking in was straight forward with the usual welcome drink but very common with Thailand boutique hotels, they only have 1 access card per room & the card has an embedded strip for turning on the power so the usual biz card in slot won't work & it sucks because it would be nice to come back to a nice cool room from the beach. The staff even though they can speak little english, generally do understand what we say if we speak slowly & in the structure they understand (for eg. same same, cheap cheap, key no work, go left right etc...)

First Impressions
The hotel looks bright & cheery with very nice corners for people to chill... except the common areas have no air con & the afternoon sun makes the areas very hot & uncomfortable to hang out. The room is rather big, new & of the design chic. The bathroom has a blind that could open up to see the bedroom so we dupped the shower area as a penguin show corner as from outside it looks like a zoo enclosure. There was no tub but there is a rain shower head with barely adequate water pressure. Shampoo & shower gel are available & though I generally do not use them in other hotels, I simply loved the scent of the shampoo. Amenities are basic with the usual bar fridge, TV & safe. The balcony is a nice area to chill with a view to the swimming pool. What I liked best is the wide dressing table with a bench. To top off, wireless Internet is free & the signal is good so we could continually get info on what to do around Krabi.

Food
We took the package without breakfast as the reviews were really bad but we realised the surrounding food stalls open rather late so we end up eating cup noodles as the day tours start from 8am so on hindsight, a bad breakfast is better then no breakfast.

Location
The hotel is located roughly in the middle between the tranquil part of Nopharatthara Beach & the bustling town area at Ao Nang beach. We turned to the wrong part (Nopharatthara Beach) when we first arrived and thought that Ao Nang town was really a dead town though the sunset is spectacular over at Ao nang Muang Krabi end. Its only at night when we tried the opposite direction did we realised we had walked the wrong direction! To get to Ao Nang town proper, once leaving the hotel, follow the road uphill towards the mini mart. Though its 10min from the main hustle & bustle, we actually liked the slight seclusion of the hotel with lower human traffic & less noise. Its also near to a good restaurant call Wangsai towards Nopharatthara beach & E-San Thai food towards Ao Nang Beach. For the more nudget conscious there are food stalls across from E-San though we find the quality at E-San much better for only a price difference of less then 100 baht.

Activities
The Hotel has 2 pools, one at ground floor where the poolside rooms have direct access, & one at the roof top. We were glad we did not pay the extra for the pool side access room though we used the pool quite extensively. For privacy, the curtains have to be completely drawn but while I was swimming I could easily see into several rooms & noticed the layout is the same as the studio ones. The depth of the pool is 1.5m & abt 20m long so its quite decent for lap swimming. However due to the unique tapering design of the hotel, the wind is funneled through the pool area which makes it very cold. The roof top pool has good view of the surrounding area & privacy but the water has a very stale sourish taste.

Though the hotel offers tour bookings for island trips, elephant rides or airport transport etc, it is advisable to head down to Ao Nang Town itself & check out the various "Tourist Information". Even though the standard rates are published though out Krabi, one can get very competitive & below rack rates from different agencies. The price difference can differ between 100 - 400 baht for each item. For eg, we got our 4 Island trip for only 400 baht (per pax) while the common published rate was 6-700 baht per person! As for Thai massage, the massage parlors immediatly around the hotel are only 200baht per hour while those in Ao Nang town is going from 350 baht & above.

Checking Out
Checking out was straight forward though we didn't realised their checkout time was 9am so we were in the room till the reception called & politely asked whether we are checking out. They only checked the mini bar & that was it. The taxi service was also prompt at the hotel doorstep.

Conclusion
Having walked around the town & looking at other resorts, we were happy that we chose The Small Hotel because we feel certain exclusiveness & quietness as compared to others, even to its bigger LA Playa sister resort where we can sense the morning madness when throngs of tourists were moving about going for breakfast or preparing for their tour departures. We were also spared the sales touts when coming out of hotels. The room is big & comfortable, just perfect for us travelling on a limited budget & just wanting to chill out for extended periods in the room or by the pool. For the price I got, I really have no complains or higher expectations.

Room Tip: 1. Get the studio rooms facing the pool rather then the road. 2. For Pool access rooms, get the cor...

it's a very beautiful hotel, a tourist is looking for. clean, friendly, nice, comfortable hotel.
location wise, slightly far to the ao nang town but there are always tut-tut available till late. but it's nearer to the seaside.
the only dis-satisfactory i get is - some of the reception cant really speak english, not enough to communicate to tourist.
other than that, this is an excellent place to stay in when you are in ao nang.

by the way, the room with pool access is fantastic!

Room Tip: pool access room!!!

We stayed at the Small over New Year 2010-11. We were traveling as a couple with a baby, my dad and sister and were given very well appointed connecting rooms. The rooms have a small balcony overlooking the pool area. Bathrooms are spacious, neat and dry. The hotel itself does not have much to offer, the pools maybe small, but we had fun with out little one ! I used the hotel spa, rates reasonable and massage good.
What i really liked about the hotel was that the breakfast was not included in our price, so we were not stuck with having to eat there everyday. They do serve buffet breakfast, however. Also, unlike most hotels during new year, they did not have compulsory
New Year Eve Gala dinner (usually at some exorbitant price). This way we could look around and enjoy the new year dinner at any of the other restaurants along the beach.
Needless to say, Krabi was magical at night, with all the lanterns up in the air and the fireworks at the beach.

This hotel is also very well located, right on the main road and yet a little away from the hustle of the beach. Lots of eateries and massage places and shopping within very walkable distance.

Great value for money and good rooms. Just the kind of place you need to explore Krabi (since you will be out more often) !

Positive: Upgraded our room from pool access to honeymoon suites at no charge. The staff are friendly and helpful. Nice outdoor jacuzzi in every pool access room.

Negative: The breakfast get cold easily as they shut off the heater after 830am. The pool is a bit small.
