“Love the serenity and the big rooms but a foodies destination it is not.”
Reviewed 16 December 2011

I stayed here with my wife and two young kids for 6 nights. The hotel itself is quite nice, comprising a number of villas, most of which are two rooms. We had a hillside view triple room (ie a double and a single with a baby cot as well) The rooms are very spacious even with a baby cot. My wife was very impressed by the large bathroom with separate large bath and shower. our room was 106 and had a nice outlook over the gardens and mountain. Some of the villas would not have as nice an outlook and I would stay away from 109 and 110. We we happy to have the hillside rather than poolside villa as they offer much more privacy when sitting out on the verandas ( which is covered with chairs and a small table).
Breakfast was decent if you want basic - toast, cereal, eggs. The cooked food at breakfast was generally cold and unappealing.
we ate one evening at the resort and the food was pretty bad. Spring rolls came out cold. When we mentioned this, they were thrown back in the deep fried and brought back out. As they had already been cut in half this second frying process created oil logged spring rolls - really bad. Most other dishes were cold. As the package included a dinner for two it is almost as though they figured we werent paying so why bother. They did prepare a chicken and veg stir fry for the children that was quite decent though.
The hotel is quite a way from the beach with the hotels hourly shuttle the only way in. Getting a tuk tuk back is very easy.
One saving grace is the new restaurant over the road called 'beer garden soi 11' from what I can tell. It's a German owned restaurant that does great food. We sacrificed a free meal in the resort for one of their delicious schnitzels. Their pizzas are also very good and the owner even makes his own peppermint schnapps.
Overall we had a great stay. Pleasant staff, great room, and wonderful serenity and seclusion. Don't come here if you want to be in the middle of it all but for destressing it is very good.

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights in December. The hotel was great - well maintained and hotel staff were friendly. The rooms were big and spacious. Even the bathroom was nice, as it had a nice big bathtub. THe only setback was its location is slightly out of Aonang town. They do offer a shuttle service every hour, which means you need to plan your time in such a way that you dont miss the shuttle, Otherwise, its about 100 baht just to get to the town which is only a short 3 min drive. A bit tough, as we had 2 young kids so timing was always off for us. There is only one restaurant in the hotel. Food is ok - but you have much more choices at Aonang. The pool is not very big - they have a tiny childrens pool as well. Did not see many families with young kids - maybe it was not the season. Overall, it is a nice, relaxing place.

Room Tip: They may offer a free upgrade to pool view if it is available

Having just come from a 5* resort in Hua Hin maybe we expected a little too much but it was the basics that disappointed us.

Phu Petra is a nice hotel and if you are planning on doing day trips whilst in Krabi and are using the hotel as a place to sleep then it does its job fine. If you are looking for a relaxing place with plenty of facilities I wouldn't recommend this place.

The room we stayed in was meant to be the best on offer (the majestic suite poolside villa), the room was big and clean in fairness. When we checked in the reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately there was a bad stench in our toilet, the smell of sewerage which was very strong, this got worse throughout the night and started to smell in our room. Furthermore we saw a Gecko (small lizard type creature in our bathroom) which we weren't comfortable with, although they are not meant to be harmful it's not an ideal situation. We complained about both things and were just told that the smell would go and so would the lizard.

The next day the lizard was back and so was the smell but it had got worse. This time I wasn't happy and neither was my wife (this was meant to be a romantic stay seeing as we were on our anniversary). After arguing the toss for sometime we managed to get them to change us to a different room but by this time it had spoiled our stay. Furthermore the mosquito's in this place are really bad and when we complained about this all they did was spray our rooms, trust me that this is not sufficient. Having read a number of reviews on here about Phu Petra and the mosquito problem I believe they should offer a plug in repellant in every room as standard. This was not offered to us.

The breakfast was average and I would say that is complimentary. In the aforementioned situations you would hope that the hotel manager would make a point of coming to see you and apologising for the circumstances but she didn't and I found her to not be very helpful and when checking out didn't offer any form of a discount.

On the upside, one member of staff in particular was very nice (Justin aka Julies), I believe Justin was an Assistant Manager, he tried to rectify our situation as best as possible and was always more than helpful - he is a gem that they need to keep hold of.

On a final note they offer a free shuttle service in to Aonang town every hour, this ran late by approximately 10 minutes everytime we used it.

On the positive side the showers are excellent and the beds are big. I don't think this is a bad place I think that we were somewhat unlucky during our stay which has left me with a sour taste but I still believe more could have been done to make the customer happy especially as this hotel has been rated number 2 of 61 hotels in Ao nang - I’d hate to see what the remainder are like!

Room Tip: A room by the poolside is nice

We are sorry for mosquitos and lizard you found while staying with us. We normally do fumigation process to get rid of mosquitos and some other insects twice a month but not a wholly 100% effective since our landscape are in tropical rainforest. However, we are very appreciated of your reccommendation about plug in repellant. We actually have five of them and offer as per requested but we will now buy more and will attach in every room.

For shuttle bus, our standard is late for 5 minutes to wait for other guests; however, it's not normal in your case. I promise to find out what has happened and fix it up to our standard.

My deepest apologies for not saying sorry regarding unpleasant situation you faced while you were with us. I've actually been acknowledged about your unhappy feeling of some circumstance and Justin consulted with our Engineering team of how to get rid of drainage smell. The team tried to fix it on the first date but the smell seems not to go anywhere as we again received complaints from you in the second night. Justin inform me of how unhappy you both feel. I then inform Justin to upgrade you to the biggest type of our villa, which is Family Grand Poolside Villa type. As you said, Justin is a gem. I hand my trust on him. That's why I did not show up and say "sorry" about the circumstance, which I should do.

I then again want to say sorry for my negligence and also thank you for your reccommendation.

We promise of keeping things much more in order and doing better and better.

Welcome you back again next time to see how improvement we all try so much to make it become excellency in both service and functions.

Best regards,
Ms. Vipada Thanasakcharoen

We came here on honeymoon and thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Tucked within spectacular and lush surroundings, we absolutely felt we were in paradise. We experienced good service in other hotels in Thailand but. Comfortable beds and a very serene pool setting. Not the cheapest, but we thought was a very good value.

All in all, I would have to say that this was the lodging highlight of our trip across Thailand!

We stayed here for 7 days with our six year old boy and the Phu Petra was a comfortable, quiet oasis for us.

The Majestic Suite we stayed in was well presented, spacious and very well laid out. I won't go into details as these can be found on their web site and in other reviews. I must say that the villa had the best toilet-bath-shower room layout I have encountered for a tropical resort. The bath tub is large and the entire area outside the bath is a shower area - no problems with accidentally wetting a dry area.

While the suite was only about 10-15 m away from the pool, we did not experience any noise disturbances. The suite is quiet and cool - its a fantastic place to hideaway from the sometimes scorching afternoons in Krabi.

The Sila Petra restaurant was where we had our daily breakfast which was of a good standard. We had a couple of evening meals when we were too lazy to catch the shuttle to Ao Nang beach and we found the food good. One thing that surprised us was that the prices were competitive and sometimes cheaper to similar restaurants in Ao Nang.

The friendly service we received from the resorts front desk, restaurant and pool was outstanding, The staff are really nice and helpful and we felt very welcome at the resort.

We stayed in Aonang for several nights once we landed in Thailand. Phu Petra certainly set the standard for Thai hospitality! The location was a bit out of the way but there was a free shuttlebus service and it felt like a whole different world just sat by the pool.

The food and cocktails were some of the best we had over our whole holiday and we found ourselves comparing everything to this hotel for the remainder of our holiday. Got to have a friendly chat with some of the staff who made our stay that little bit more memorable. Top class service! Even arranged our bus and ferry ticket to our next destination, Phi Phi Islands!

Room Tip: Rooms towards the back (furthest from the pool) are nearer to the A/C power units, hardly noticeable...

Grabbed this hotel on a great offer during low season and the hotel didn't disappoint.

Set against the gorgeous limestone karst mountains, it's tempting to simply lie by the pool and soak in scenery. Of course, if you go during October which is low season for a reason (plenty of rain), there's not much time for the outdoors.

Huge rooms, huge bathroom with standalone shower, spacious bathtub and wash basin... It was more than comfortable for 3 girls.

The breakfast was adequate, a simple american buffet style. Although the flies can be disturbing so watch what you eat. Sometimes, the flies get trapped in the yoghurt, or buzz around the fruits.

The hotel's restaurant has pretty decent food, although it can get a little repetitious. We ate the set dinner one evening, and it was basically 6 dishes of prawns and chicken in different sauce. Service is a tad slow, given they only had 2 waiters. But hey, you don't go to krabi to rush around, now do you?

The only downside was that we found ants in the beds on our final night. We had 2 rooms - one had a couple of ants, the other a lot more. Thankfully, the hotel sprung into action (even though it was 1am) and offered a new room.

Other thing to take note of is the location. It isn't the best remote resort for nothing. A distance away from the main beach area, you have to either take the hotel's shuttle (a large, airy converted truck) or a tuk tuk. Be sure not to overcrowd the tuk tuk (5 adults crammed into a tiny space may seem like an economical idea at the start..) As the roads has many dips and the tuk tuk can seem awfully flimsy and it hurtles down a dark lane.
