My wife and I spent our first 5 nights on our first trip to Thailand at the Phu Petra. We were exhausted after traveling 24 hours from NYC, and the hotel offered shuttle service from HKT for a decent price. The hotel grounds are small but quite nice, nestled between Aonang and the limestone cliffs. We spent one morning by the pool watching the sun rise; very peaceful.

Hotel staff is friendly, especially Justin (as noted by other reviewers).

The rooms are quite spacious, notably the bathroom with a a huge walk-in shower and big bathtub. That said, our room (#115) felt dark, even with all the shades open. Furthermore, it's difficult to leave the shades open as everyone can then see into the room. The bed is HUGE but very firm.

As others note the location is outside Aonang town. There is a shuttle service to town every hour and from town nearly every hour, so you have to plan around it. There is only one restaurant in the hotel, and the food is good - not great; we ate the Thai set dinner one night and felt the food in town is much better at a much lower price. Breakfast is good, though - lots of fresh fruit, excellent yogurt and granola, and fresh juice.

Not a bad place to stay - we felt the hotels we stayed in afterward (in Ko Phi Phi and Chiang Mai) were much more posh, but for the value this is a great choice.

We were looking for a nicer place to have Christmas dinner, and we were so thankful to find this restaurant. We did not stay overnight, but wish we weren't already booked somewhere else! The staff gave us the best attention and dinner presentation of any place we have eaten yet. A definite thumbs up to this place!!!

We were fortunate enough to spend 12 glorious nights in Phu Petra in December and loved every minute. The rooms were amazing, very big with huge beds, maybe a litttle hard but didn't stop me sleeping. The bathroom is fab!! Huge bath walk-in shower and all other usual ammenities. Yes the location is a little out of Ao Nang but the peace and tranquility of the hotel more than makes up for that. We found it was the best of both worlds - get the free transport into town where you can enjoy a lively time then return to the haven that is Phu Petra. Breakfast is a very civilised way to start the day at this hotel. A good choice ranging from continental, cereal, fresh fruit and if you wanted anything different all you had to do was ask. Above all the staff are great, from the housekeeping team right the way through every part of the hotel, they were helpful, polite and always ready with a welcoming smile..It was our first time in Thailand and thanks to Phu Petra we hope to return in the not too distant future.

Room Tip: rooms 108 and 107 have adjoining doors

We stayed for ten nights and highly recommend this hotel:

The service from all staff was at all times efficient and super-friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. Thai hospitality at its very best.

Location. The resort is only a very short ride from the main drag (free hourly bus down) but this gives you the huge and welcome benefit of a degree of peaceful relaxation, daytime or evening, not available at hotels along the strip. I walked down the road into town a couple of times and it took only 15mins to the centre! 100 THB for tuk-tuk back.

The hotel public areas, gardens, pool area and our room were all maintained to an immaculate standard. Again, we found it a very appealing place just to relax and enjoy the tranquility. They do not exploit their ''remote'' location in their restaurant pricing - prices are consistent throughout Ao Nang generally and Phu Petra was priced accordingly for food, beer and cocktails. The service and food was better here than at the restaurants of the beachfront hotels we tried.

We have given the Phu Petra resort 5 stars because the room, facilities, general establishment and, most of all, service were all as promised and we left feeling truly relaxed and looking forward to returning here.

Room Tip: Poolside rooms are best!

I stayed here with my wife and two young kids for 6 nights. The hotel itself is quite nice, comprising a number of villas, most of which are two rooms. We had a hillside view triple room (ie a double and a single with a baby cot as well) The rooms are very spacious even with a baby cot. My wife was very impressed by the large bathroom with separate large bath and shower. our room was 106 and had a nice outlook over the gardens and mountain. Some of the villas would not have as nice an outlook and I would stay away from 109 and 110. We we happy to have the hillside rather than poolside villa as they offer much more privacy when sitting out on the verandas ( which is covered with chairs and a small table).
Breakfast was decent if you want basic - toast, cereal, eggs. The cooked food at breakfast was generally cold and unappealing.
we ate one evening at the resort and the food was pretty bad. Spring rolls came out cold. When we mentioned this, they were thrown back in the deep fried and brought back out. As they had already been cut in half this second frying process created oil logged spring rolls - really bad. Most other dishes were cold. As the package included a dinner for two it is almost as though they figured we werent paying so why bother. They did prepare a chicken and veg stir fry for the children that was quite decent though.
The hotel is quite a way from the beach with the hotels hourly shuttle the only way in. Getting a tuk tuk back is very easy.
One saving grace is the new restaurant over the road called 'beer garden soi 11' from what I can tell. It's a German owned restaurant that does great food. We sacrificed a free meal in the resort for one of their delicious schnitzels. Their pizzas are also very good and the owner even makes his own peppermint schnapps.
Overall we had a great stay. Pleasant staff, great room, and wonderful serenity and seclusion. Don't come here if you want to be in the middle of it all but for destressing it is very good.

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights in December. The hotel was great - well maintained and hotel staff were friendly. The rooms were big and spacious. Even the bathroom was nice, as it had a nice big bathtub. THe only setback was its location is slightly out of Aonang town. They do offer a shuttle service every hour, which means you need to plan your time in such a way that you dont miss the shuttle, Otherwise, its about 100 baht just to get to the town which is only a short 3 min drive. A bit tough, as we had 2 young kids so timing was always off for us. There is only one restaurant in the hotel. Food is ok - but you have much more choices at Aonang. The pool is not very big - they have a tiny childrens pool as well. Did not see many families with young kids - maybe it was not the season. Overall, it is a nice, relaxing place.

Room Tip: They may offer a free upgrade to pool view if it is available

Having just come from a 5* resort in Hua Hin maybe we expected a little too much but it was the basics that disappointed us.

Phu Petra is a nice hotel and if you are planning on doing day trips whilst in Krabi and are using the hotel as a place to sleep then it does its job fine. If you are looking for a relaxing place with plenty of facilities I wouldn't recommend this place.

The room we stayed in was meant to be the best on offer (the majestic suite poolside villa), the room was big and clean in fairness. When we checked in the reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately there was a bad stench in our toilet, the smell of sewerage which was very strong, this got worse throughout the night and started to smell in our room. Furthermore we saw a Gecko (small lizard type creature in our bathroom) which we weren't comfortable with, although they are not meant to be harmful it's not an ideal situation. We complained about both things and were just told that the smell would go and so would the lizard.

The next day the lizard was back and so was the smell but it had got worse. This time I wasn't happy and neither was my wife (this was meant to be a romantic stay seeing as we were on our anniversary). After arguing the toss for sometime we managed to get them to change us to a different room but by this time it had spoiled our stay. Furthermore the mosquito's in this place are really bad and when we complained about this all they did was spray our rooms, trust me that this is not sufficient. Having read a number of reviews on here about Phu Petra and the mosquito problem I believe they should offer a plug in repellant in every room as standard. This was not offered to us.

The breakfast was average and I would say that is complimentary. In the aforementioned situations you would hope that the hotel manager would make a point of coming to see you and apologising for the circumstances but she didn't and I found her to not be very helpful and when checking out didn't offer any form of a discount.

On the upside, one member of staff in particular was very nice (Justin aka Julies), I believe Justin was an Assistant Manager, he tried to rectify our situation as best as possible and was always more than helpful - he is a gem that they need to keep hold of.

On a final note they offer a free shuttle service in to Aonang town every hour, this ran late by approximately 10 minutes everytime we used it.

On the positive side the showers are excellent and the beds are big. I don't think this is a bad place I think that we were somewhat unlucky during our stay which has left me with a sour taste but I still believe more could have been done to make the customer happy especially as this hotel has been rated number 2 of 61 hotels in Ao nang - I’d hate to see what the remainder are like!

Room Tip: A room by the poolside is nice

We are sorry for mosquitos and lizard you found while staying with us. We normally do fumigation process to get rid of mosquitos and some other insects twice a month but not a wholly 100% effective since our landscape are in tropical rainforest. However, we are very appreciated of your reccommendation about plug in repellant. We actually have five of them and offer as per requested but we will now buy more and will attach in every room.

For shuttle bus, our standard is late for 5 minutes to wait for other guests; however, it's not normal in your case. I promise to find out what has happened and fix it up to our standard.

My deepest apologies for not saying sorry regarding unpleasant situation you faced while you were with us. I've actually been acknowledged about your unhappy feeling of some circumstance and Justin consulted with our Engineering team of how to get rid of drainage smell. The team tried to fix it on the first date but the smell seems not to go anywhere as we again received complaints from you in the second night. Justin inform me of how unhappy you both feel. I then inform Justin to upgrade you to the biggest type of our villa, which is Family Grand Poolside Villa type. As you said, Justin is a gem. I hand my trust on him. That's why I did not show up and say "sorry" about the circumstance, which I should do.

I then again want to say sorry for my negligence and also thank you for your reccommendation.

We promise of keeping things much more in order and doing better and better.

Welcome you back again next time to see how improvement we all try so much to make it become excellency in both service and functions.

Best regards,
Ms. Vipada Thanasakcharoen
