This resort just opened in Dec 2009. So it has been just over a month now since their opening. Resort website said that it is a 4 star resort, but from my point of view, it needs lots of improvement to be a 4 star. Next time I'd rather choose a resort that has enough experience of serving guests and number of reviews.

Pros:
1. New facilities and spacious room
Everything is clean and new. Rooms are spacious with patio.

2. Friendly and kind staffs
Every single one of the staff is really nice, friendly and willing to help you.

3. Nice scenery
This resort is located in front of hills and lush greenery, busting quite a nice view and scenery.

Cons:
1. Literally no soundproof in your room
I could even hear the person next door's counterpart talking over the phone. Also outdoor air conditioning unit's noise wasn't filtered at all and I couldn't sleep.

2. Too isolated
It is in Ao Nang beach area, but to the main street where most restaurants, cafes and other amenities are concentrated, you can't walk. Either take the resort shuttle bus that runs every one hour or rent your own vehicle.

3. Small sized swimming pool
Compared to other resorts that I have been to in Thailand, swimming pool was quite small. Also they might run short of sun bed when the rooms are fully booked.

The Phu Petra was nothing like what the internet pictures led me to expect. It is nothing special. I found it too secluded! The main street is really too far away. Guests must rely on the shuttle service to get out. There are no tuk-tuks waiting outside the property to take guests into town. The shuttle service is really needed, but guests are forced to the schedule.

The Phu Petra is very boring! There is no gym or any other activity items/services except the small pool. Even the television channels are extremely limited. There is a large covered deck and a lot of open space around the pool, but there is no nice lounge seating. All this space is empty with zero ambiance. It is very uninviting. Even the lobby is stark and unwelcoming... and excessively hot with mosquitoes. There has been no thought into the lobby setup. There is a desk with brochures piled all over it, another desk with old mags and old books piled on it and a plain table with two computers... no pens or paper. The setup of these three stations is very weak and cheap. So is the towel table by the pool. And there is often not even any music being played in the lobby or deck area. There is an ugly stereo setup with cables running across the deck floor to large black ugly speakers. Terribly unsightly and unbecoming of a place that claims to be an almost 5 star property.

The villas (more like cabins) are squished together. The room interiors are of course new with some nice touches. The water pressure is weak, the bath mirror area is poorly lit and there are a zillion light switches throughout the room. The decor is plain and does not reflect anything Thai. It is slightly modern, but plain. The internet pictures make the rooms look much nicer than they really are.

The service and breakfast are very poor! I do not think there has been any training provided to the staff. They truly are clueless and do not initiate service towards guests. They only provide service when a guests takes the effort to locate them and ask for something. There is no pool service at all. Self-service all the way.

I wanted to love this place and expected to write a rave review, but sadly it was a big boring disappointment. I cannot recommend the Phu Petra unless you are seeking complete seclusion in an utterly boring environment. I can only hope there is a lot of improvements in the future to up the class and service level. Not quite a three star property. Very, very average at best.

Phu Petra is not a 4.5 resort. It is very average and small. It is currently in soft opening so not all facilities are operating. There is currently no gift/sundry shop, no lounge and the spa consists of two mattresses on a bare floor. There is no gym facilities. The lobby building, veranda and restaurant are very barren. The staff are not service driven but, if approached, will assist with requests. The staff seems to need a lot of direction. However, there isn't any management overseeing operations so the staff seem unaware of what to do. The website depictions do not really match the real thing. This is a very small property and the bungalows are very close together. It does not have a resort feel at all. It is more on the rustic side.

The location is very remote. It is too far from the main street to walk so guests are reliant on the shuttle service to get into Aonang and back. Best to rent a motorbike during one's stay to be able to come and go as one wants. The road that Phu Petra is on has no lighting in the evening so is pitch black.

The pool is very nice especially with the gorgeous mountain view. There is no pool attendant so guests must setup there loungers with towels and open/close the umbrellas on their own. Guests must also go to the restaurant to request any food or beverage to have poolside. The staff never come around the pool to ask if guests want anything and never some to collect empty drink glasses. Guests take them up to them. The towel stand is a table with fabric skirting (like a hotel banquet table) with the towels plopped on top. Rather ugly. The pool area trees are not in planters and the plants along the veranda are in plant store plastic pots making the pool area look very unfinished. Phu Petra seems to attract couples so the atmosphere is nice and quiet around the pool. The lobby/pool music seemed limited to the alternating of two CDs. One Chinese instrumental the other Western 80's pop music. Overall, Phu Petra does not feel Thai at all.

Phu Petra does not provide guests with beach baskets, mats or towels for day excursions. This would be a nice touch for a 4.5 star property. Some guests hang their swimwear and towels over their bungalow railings which looks very summer camp so detracts from any "resort" feel. Some guests brought their own beach towels so there is an array of towel prints hanging around.

Breakfast needs much improvement. Some offerings look like leftovers from the previous evenings menu.

The rooms are new and nice. The shower/wet room is very roomy. The water pressure is not good. Strong surges of hot water and then cold & weak water pressure. The water seems to be generated from a pump.

Phu Petra is not a resort. It is not 4.5 stars worthy. Phu Petra is a nice remote place for adult couples to spend a few days in simple rustic quiet surroundings. I would not recommend Phu Petra for families, nor for anyone expecting detailed/attentive service, nor as a base for an entire stay in Aonang. I would recommend Phu Petra for a break from the Aonang touristiness.
