“A boutique resort - relaxing and quiet setting.”
Reviewed 21 July 2013

We stayed 7 nights and wanted to stay longer. The resort is located about 2 km from the beach. There are motel rooms situated at the front of the resort near the restaurant and reception and bungalow style units set back in the lush jungle style gardens strategically placed around the main pools. As a family of 4 (with 2 teenage boys) we had the 2 bedroom bungalow. this was very spacious for all. Has a medium size fridge freezer in the kitchen along with sink, microwave, kitchen table and kettle. Also had an outside lounge area with chairs, table and ceiling fan. The rooms all had separate air conditioning units. Beds were firm and comfortable. Very large bathroom with own LCD TV. Breakfast was quite adequate. It has the normal egg station (poached, scrambled, fried, boiled, omelets, etc),cereals including bircher muesli, toast, breads, pancakes, pastries (various croissants and buns) chicken sausages, asian dishes and fresh fruit and yogurts. due to the smaller volume of quests the hotel has, the quantity of food put out is proportionate - Thais don't like to waist food, nor should they. It its not there just ask and they will oblige. Coffee was fresh and not instant coffee as I have read somewhere else. You may need to ask for some refills however.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. they offer a FREE drop off to the beach/main shopping stip and will also collect you if you call them. This was a great service which we used often each day. Other places charged fees for same. this service made our stay so much more relaxing and enjoyable.
Free wifi internet in all rooms and it was reliable. Both pools was lovely and enjoyable. It was like we had the place to our selves most of the time.
We hope to return again next year. Cant wait.

Just spent 6 nights year in June and cant stop raving about it. The staff were incredibly helpful with everything, offering us directions, cheaper ways of getting around and always smiling and greeting us.

With a free shuttle into town the location is fine. Only a ten minute walk anyway, which we did most of the time. Being back from the road only adds to the peacefulness and serenity.

The rooms were spacious, comfortable and always clean.

Thank you Phupimaan resort for an amazing stay and we will be back again and again :) :)

I travelled with my husband, 2 kids and my parents and booked 2 deluxe rooms.

Arranged pick up (mini van) for 6 of us from the hotel which costs us 1200 THB which is very expensive. We met a driver along the streets of Ao Nang for our transfer to the airport at only 600 THB, also on a mini-van. So try getting in getting your pick up elsewhere..or I can also share the contact if needed.

The staff who greeted us was really nice, warm and friendly, and, as expected from the reviews here we were told to settle our bill upfront. The friendliness didnt stay long as she suddenly realised that we have 2 children (8 and 10) with us and thus needed to pay extra on top of what we had already paid.

I might have missed reading the fine prints when booking the room, but so from experience, in other hotels, I was asked only to pay for breakfast for the kids if sharing the room with parents..my explanation didnt gel well with her. Apparently, in that hotel, only children below 5 travel free?? After much unpleasant exchanges she then said ok, she will charge only for 1 child and that too at 50% 'discount'.. I was happy to pay but her atttitude needs some working on..we told her ok we will pay, but, only upon check out. It made one wonder if the smiles and hellos in the beginning was only superficial...
Upon checkout, when my husband came to settle the bill...he was told that the charge for the children no longer applied..on well..so my advise is to check how are the charges like if you are travelling with young children....
And yes I had this as a warning too > if you break anything in the room you will pay! like doh!

ok personal views aside, the room was really spacious, 2 double beds, a single bed and a sofa bed righ by the window. The safe is not your usual standard safe so my advise is to get the staff show you how to do it before meddling around with it. The toilets are ok > no problem with sewerage smell that some mentioned here.

I like the fact that the resort is small > thus eliminating the crowd. The pool is always almost empty and a joy to hang out at > no towel service near the pool > collect it from the reception.

Breakfast is so-so, they'll prepare the eggs according to your likings..but the choices of food is blah..the usual bread, muffins and cakes, salad, choices of noodles, rice and some dishes.

Theres no lift, so if you are travelling with the elderly, climbing up stairs might be a problem

Distance - A little far from the beach and the heart of the action..but the cart is at your service from 10am to 10pm...so thats a saving grace...

View - absolutely stunning! Lush, green beautiful view from wherever you are, in your room, bfast table, pool..defintely a plus point there

Cleanliness - My mom complained that her room wasnt cleaned properly, the sand at the balcony wasnt cleaned, and her toilet sink leaked, and it wasnt fixed until on the 3rd day we were there...Our room was ok, but thats probably because with children a room can never be spotless :)

Theres a minimart near the resort..which is about 2 mins walk away..it has the basic supplies like water, snacks, and even a laundrette...its a Muslim owned minimart so you wont find alcohol there tho..7eleven is about 10 mins walk away..

Theres a small eatery down the hlill of the resort, just beside the mosque, with very reasonable priced food..if may look a little run down, we have 2 meals there with no issues so far. The green curry is the best I've ever tasted. It starts operation at 2 pm. We were there one time at about 1230 not knowing they are not opened yet, but they were so accomodating to actually open up earlier since we couldnt leave anyway due to the rain :) These guys are the real deal..truly amazing...

So, in summary, other than the slight hiccup upon check in, I think the resort is great, if you dont mind a bit of seclusion and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the markets and the beach...

My friend and i stayed here on the 23rd May - 27th May. We searched a lot of the various hotels and decided on this cos of the timber setting. It makes us feel more like a resort than a hotel. Nonetheless, the moment we arrived... it doesn't disappoint us AT ALL.

It was like a piece of paradise. The place is quiet, away from the crowd. Pool is beautiful. Room is simple yet cosy. Staff were super friendly.

If you seek for somewhere quiet and peaceful and gives you a sense of belonging, this should be your choice.

Toilet is huge but the toilet tends to give out some sewage smell which i believe can hardly be controlled.

Lobby staff is always friendly and helpful. I like the transfer. It is at your call between 10am - 10pm around Ao nang area. I like the driver very much. Always carry a smile.

Pool is relatively huge. We stayed at room 301, we may not have a nice pool view, but the mountain view in front of us is mesmerising.

Breakfast is simple. we did not enjoy the spread very much. Hope that they can improve a lil on that.

During the monsoon season, you get a lot of mozzies, likewise for this place. But they do offer some mosquito coils and just make sure you dont keep the balcony door open for too long.

We love this resort and we will definitely return to this place again.

Room Tip: 3rd floor balcony are bigger than those in 2nd floor. No lift, just gonna climb

We had the most amazing time here. The hotel is relatively small and that means you get a personal treatment.the food in the restaurant was really tasty and was very reasonably priced.
It is a little bit of a walk to the main stretch of hotels, markets and the beach, but it doesn't take long to walk there and it meant that it was peaceful when you wanted to get away from it all.
We had an absolutely lovely time.we stayed for 3 days and then went to a 5* expensive hotel for the other 3days and I have to say phu pi maan was the highlight.
The only caveat in this review was that we got and upgrade on our room which was amazing so it did mean we got incredible value.

Pros: This property and pool is lovely, many flowering trees and water features. The staff is friendly, helpful and always pleasant. We especially enjoyed Weena. Hotel had a very flexible complimentary tuk tuk shuttle which you can take to the beach front. Breakfast was very good and varied, eggs made to order, fresh fruit, as well as asian options. Dinner was good as well, alcohol is not served but you can bring your own. Pictures make the rooms look new, and although clean, the floors and furniture are a bit worn.
Cons: Morning coffee was instant nescafe, not brewed. Basic rooms do not look over pool, only the 1 and 2 bedroom villas are poolside/ poolview. View of mts from our end suite room is impeded by electrical lines and tower, but we were glad to have the view and light! AC turned off automatically when leaving room and took time to cool down upon return. Tours booked thru desk cost more than when you book yourself (paid 200-250 baht more for a day tour than the others on the tour). Airport transfer cost 800 baht thru hotel vs 600 baht when self arranged. It is convenient to book thru hotel, but there are many tour operator booths on the street. Pillows were very hard and full, tough on side and stomach sleepers!

Room Tip: suite on end (207) has a picture window on side with mountain view as well as a large balcony in fro...

Stayed here for a week at the end of March. After a slightly unconventional transfer, we were left stranded in the middle of Ao Nang, a quick phone call to the hotel and the shuttle bus was there moments later to take us to the hotel, which took about 2 minutes. We were met by wonderfully friendly staff with big smiles and a cool fruit drink, which made us feel very welcome. There has been several reviews on here about the check in process - we didn't have any problems whatsoever, we sat on the comfortable sofas sipping our drinks and looking at the huge Koi Carp swimming about the pools outside reception while the paperwork was brought to us to look over and sign. Makes a nice change from standing up and queuing at a hotel reception desk! We were shown to our room, which was very nice, two large double beds, a nice bathroom with separate bath and shower (great water pressure for those that get upset about these things), and a balcony with a couple of chairs. We were in the most basic of the rooms at the Phu Pi Maan, and it was great, had everything you needed. If you are planning on spending every day of your holiday at the hotel and in your room, then have a look at the other options, but I would save the money and use it to go on trips and see a bit more of the country rather than a hotel room. That said, in the morning and getting ready to go out on an evening, it was nice to watch TV in the room - a mix of channels are available including Discovery and BBC News.
We didn't eat dinner at the hotel, but we did have breakfast. If I'm honest, the hotel could probably do with having a little look at what they are serving for breakfast. Don’t get me wrong, its fine and perfectly adequate, with a choice of cereal, made to order omelette and usually something 'Thai' like rice, but it’s not amazing and maybe a little more choice would be good. If I could make one suggestion to the hotel about the breakfast thought it would be to stop using the instant coffee and use filter. Not an expensive change but it would make a huge difference. Staff in the restaurant were always pleasant and smiling which got the day off to a good start.
The pool area is great, although we only spent half a day by the pool the whole time we were there. There are 2 pools, one upper and one lower, and there are plenty of sun loungers to go round. It never seemed crowded, and the pool has great views of the cliffs in the distance making it feel like a proper tropical retreat!
A bit about Ao Nang itself. Ao Nang is essentially 3 main streets - the street on the beachfront, and then 2 streets going up the hill at either end of the beach. Kind of a "U" shape. Phu Pi Maan is located towards the top of one of these streets. It takes about 10 minutes to walk down to the beach, and maybe 15 to walk back up again. There is also a free shuttle bus from the hotel, we used it a couple of times and if you ring them from the beach, they are there in minutes if you don’t fancy a walk back up. We enjoyed walking around because there are plenty of shops en route to have a look at. Speaking of the shops, having spent the first couple of days in Bangkok, shopping was a very different experience in Ao Nang. Thai people are generally very quiet, non pushy and don't really do the "hard sell" which is good because most of us Brits don't like it. There seems to be a lot of "non-Thais" who have shops in Ao Nang and who like to stand outside and hassle you as you walk past. It gets a bit annoying having someone try and drag you into the same tailor’s shop/restaurant/souvenir shop every night! Also the prices are very expensive compared to elsewhere in the country. If you are staying somewhere else first, I would suggest doing all you’re shopping there, as you will find Ao Nang much pricier.
We ate at a few nice restaurants. Have a look on Trip Advisor and you will see the ones which are well rated. I would recommend the Massaman for lovely Thai food at a good price, Lae Lay for a treat in a nice hilltop setting looking over the town and most of all the street food! We ate street food every days (and lots of it) and we neither of us was ill once! OK, the stands don't always look spotlessly clean, but what do you expect! Walk up the hill, away from the beach and you will get a lot more for your money. Beautiful BBQ chicken and kebabs, fantastic fruit shakes, pad Thai and plenty more. For those that are worried about drinks made with local ice, the ice they use in drinks/shakes is all bought in, and is made in a factory with purified water so it is perfectly safe to drink.
I would recommend visiting as many of the islands and beaches as possible. You can do this on either long tail boats from the beach in Ao Nang or on a speedboat organised by a tour operator. I would avoid the big trips on the speedboats if possible as they are so crowded it’s difficult to enjoy it. Long tail boats are slower, but definitely more authentic! Feel free to ask if you have any questions about what islands to visit and how, I'd be happy to share my thoughts on it!
We also went to the Nosey Parker Elephant Trekking place, I might do a separate review on that, but we really enjoyed it. It’s 10 minutes from the hotel and they come and pick you up and drop you back off again. No concerns whatsoever with animal welfare despite what others have said.
Overall, the Phu Pi Maan was great and I highly recommend it. The staff really make it, in particular the 2 ladies on reception we so friendly, always smiling and there to help with any problems you might have. They even spoke to restaurants and tour operators for us and sorted out a couple of issues we had with trips etc. Don’t hesitate to book; I think you get good value for money.

Room Tip: Don't worry about the villas, the standard rooms are very good - save your money and spend it o...
