“Cheap and cheerful!”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

My boyfriend and I loved Popeyes, may not look like much when you first arrive but the rooms are nice and clean, they have air con, a safe and a powerful shower! Wifi is also really good all over the guesthouse. The best part though was the Dreams bar outside where its really easy to meet other people, there are free games and Yaya who runs it lets you play your own music, we had really great nits there. Can't remember how much we paid but was one of the cheaper places around and you still get a great night sleep. We had laundry done and there is also a 7-11 down the street which comes in handy. its also close to shops and the beach. You won't be surrounded by luxury but for a typical backpacker this place is amazing!

Popeye Guest House was in a great location and we really enjoyed our stay. Our friend joined us for the last 2 weeks of our Thailand stay and we were so happy the first place she got to stay with us was here. We had a double room but paid a small additional fee to have an extra bed put into the room. We emailed the hotel our request and they got back to us and had the extra bed ready on our arrival. Our friend ended up arriving a day early and they let her stay in our room for one night without paying for our full stay up front and were really accommodating in regards to her needs being alone that night.

We booked a fan room but ended up paying 150 two nights for the air con (as the weather was so hot here! I am currently sat in our next hotel sweating buckets!) and it really cooled us all down. The TV had a wonderful range of channels more than I would expect at a guesthouse (the only other place we had this many channels was when we went all out on an airport hotel). They did our laundry cheaper than anywhere else too!

There was so much going on in this area! Loads of bars 5 minute walk (they are interesting bars too! Lots of ladies looking for business but great fun for a group of girls). There were travel companies in the road who sorted 'special price' for trips.

All in all we loved popeye and would return!

The location was good, a 5 minute walk from the beach and close to plenty of shopping, massage places, tattoo parlors and restaurants. Average service.

The key is attached to a card, which you have to put into a slot in your room to switch on the power - this means you can't leave anything perishable in the fridge, or any of your electronics charging (unless you plan on being in your room the whole time!).

We initially booked an a/c room online via booking.com but when we arrived and saw the room we decided to go for the fan option which was 100B cheaper. The lady who manages the place was really nice and friendly allowed us to change our booking without any problems.
The room was very good in size, with hot shower, TV and fridge. It was very clean on arrival and it was also cleaned every 2 days. Guesthouse is located on a quiet side street, just around the corner from Family Mart, shops, restaurants and about 200m to the beach.

The manager was always extremely friendly and helpful, she allowed us to use the PC in her tatto studio next door for printing, offered a laundry service on site and organized a taxi to the airport 100B chaeper than most places. Wi-fi in our room was very good.

We booked the twin beds AC room via online (Facebook page look for Popeye GuestHouse AoNang). Her English is really bad altho I've asked many many questions she only could answer yes or don't answer you at all. Lol, anyway we were afraid that she wouldn't remember our booking but surprisingly she did! We came from the krabi airport via taxi (shared cab with another couple for 600baht per car, if you take the bus it will cost 150 per person so if you see someone booking the cab just walk ahead and ask if they don't mind sharing the cab with you, btw u can only book the cab via the counter tic) Guest house located at the ally near TMB bank so if you r coming from the airport, after you pass mcD on your right, the turning to the ally is on your left at 300-500m on ur left very near to the TMB bank.
Anyway the room comes with water heater, AC fridge and a cable tv and twin beds. Reasonably clean :) the toilet door a lil bit sheer transparent. Hehe. We paid 600 baht per night after crazy bargaining cos usually that room is at 700 baht per night. Usually 600 baht u get a smaller room without TV. No drinking water supplied so do get them from the convenient stores nearby, tap water not for drinking. The lady is super nice n sweet she can make calls for u for free :)
If you r looking for a good cheap massage place walk down to the beach and on the left after u pass the fisherman bar go ahead and find stall no.14. For dinner u can try luck yim or are ba ba. Tantas food too salty and bamboo takes forever for food to come. The night markets are nice too! Can get those backpacks counterfeits for a bargained price (65L north face for about 700 baht, 20L deuter bag for 250baht)

My wife and myself booked this place thru the internet after reading the reviews here. We were not disappointed. It is clean, has air conditioning, water heater, safe box and wifi. It's a no frills place to stay for those who need a place to sleep only. Its proximity to the beach is so ideal and with the prices, it'll be hard-pressed to find a better value place. The owner is a very nice person. We absolutely love it.
However, don't use the tour agency as recommended by the owner as you can get a better deal by walking to the pier itself. We got a trip to Phi2 (Bamboo, Lei, Don & snorkelling from boat inc free flowing drinks & lunch) at 1500Baht compared to tour price of 1800Baht.

Extremely kind owner/manager. Ask her to show you her travel agent friend around the corner. We booked a day trip to Phi Phi from her friend, and that agent actually walked over to the guesthouse to tell us the bus to the boat was running a bit late the morning we were supposed to leave. The bus showed up a total of five minutes late - that kind of service just doesn't happen in Thailand in my experience. About the guesthouse: overall, very good. We booked for 3 nights and ended up staying 5 nights. Our room was cleaned one time, but there we no ants at least. The beach is a couple hundred meters from the guesthouse, so the location is good enough. The guesthouse is in an alley with a couple of bars, a couple of restaurants (best fried rice next to right next to Popeyes), a beauty shop, and a massage parlor. There's a 7Eleven 100 meters north bad south of the guesthouse, so technically you could crawl everywhere you needed to go. The only two main 'cons' were the loud music coming from the bar until midnight every night, and their 'comforter' was simply a queen sized towel - not that comforting! But great air con, clean rooms. Try booking through Popeye's directly, there are cheaper rooms than those published/offered on booking websites. And skip Ao Nang beach and go to the one immediately north called Napparat Thara Beach (you have to walk on the street around the big hill/cliff to get to it).
