My husband and I got married in Koh Samui in mid-January and spent most of the month travelling around Thailand. We stayed at some extraordinary resorts in first-class locations, and being a frequent visitor to Thailand. I have high expectations.
Sala Talay Resort and Spa in Krabi is a newly opened resort. We arrived in the last week of January 2009, and spent a week there. The resort had been officially opened for 8 weeks and taking this into account they did a great job!
It was reasonably priced, but I do suggest to anyone thinking of staying here to book the Lagoon Pool Access Room. It was extremely hot during January and there's nothing better than sitting on your balcony and if you feel up to it, jumping off your balcony into the cool water. The balcony gets heaps of sun from midday, so it acts like your own private sunbaking deck.
The rooms are spacious with plasma mounted TVs. They've taken a urban-minimilistic approach to design and have used raw materials like polished concrete for the walls. I like the use of concrete and wood, although it may not suit to everyones taste. In saying that, it's a comfy, no fuss room and has everything that you need.
The only fault about our room was that it had a foul 'dirty fish bowl' smell coming from the bathroom. It came and went, but was lingering around long enough to annoy you. I wasn't too concerned, and I'm sure it's a problem that can easily be fixed in the future. I'm sure it was just our room too.
Breakfast was half buffet style, with fresh fruits, cereals, muffins, croisants. A nice selection. You could then order your hot food and they would cook this for you on the spot. Large selection of fried rice, pancakes, Chinese porridge, eggs, bacon, baked beans etc
Breaky is served upstairs in their open air restaurant. It gets a beautiful breeze in the morning and has a lovely view of Nopparat Beach. Ao Nang Beach is the busiest part of town and Nopparat Beach is right next door. Sala Talay Resort is only a lovely walk into Ao Nang, yet far enough from the noise and hustle and bustle.
There is a long tail boat terminal down the road about 50 metres and allows you access to all the surrounding islands. Extremely convenient and cost-effective.
They have free internet for guests which is fantastic and there's no time limit. They have a gym overlooking the beach, a little library and the staff are wonderfully friendly.
Taking into account how new the resort is, they are doing a fantactic job and we wish them all the very best. I would definitely recommend Sala Talay Resort because it's in a great location and they provide a great service. Definitely 3 1/2 to 4 stars.
They own a restaurant adjacent to the resort called Pakarang Seafood Restaurant. DO NOT miss it. You can eat like a king for under $20 Australian/couple. That includes seafood, alcohol and the food is delicious. The atmosphere is devine. They have a live duo playing every night. It's just a great place to dine and it doesn't cost a fortune. The pineapple fried rice was huge and only cost $4 Australian....! Beautifully presented in a pineapple.
Good luck Sala Talay!
