Holiday Inn Resort Krabi Ao Nang Beach
Ranked #15 of 111 Hotels in Ao Nang
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 24 January 2010

My gf and I just returned from a 2 night stay at the Sala. I chose this hotel because of the location and value. The location was the best feature as it was 1)across the street from the beach ( a quiet stretch- but you would not go in the water as it was muddy) and 2)at the end of the main street through Ao Nang. Its easy to walk or take a tuk tuk into town from this point.
Pros-
Pool: We went for the pool room as we both enjoy swimming and thought it would be cool to access the pool from the room. It was unique, but if you are looking for privacy, this is not the place for you. The pool itself was clean and long enough to exercise.

Staff: I didn't find the staff to be inconsiderate as previous reviewers said. In fact they were pleasant, helpful and quiet. The language barrier is a factor so don't expect too much in the way of tourist advice or chit chat from the staff. They will quickly respond to requests for new towels and locking valuables.
Cons-
Breakfast: The breakfast was barely edible. Other reviewers have highlighted this and they were right. Most 4 stars will put on a decent western and asian breakfast- they missed on both. This is unfortunate as we wanted to start our day with a good breafast but instead found ourselves craving lunch on both days almost 2 hours later.

Bar: The bar was way overpriced. The happy hour is only 1 hr- from 12-1pm. This is too bad as part of the fun of a vacation is chilling at the bar before/after dinner but not when its blatant robbery. There is a mini mart around the corner where beers are 1/3 the price.

Bathroom in our room: The toilet smelled of a urine smell like someone had relieved themselves on the back wall of the shower or behing the toilet. During the night my gf noticed the odor coming out of the bathroom, even with the bathroom door shut. I thought about complaining but realized its likely the pipes underneath the toilet. Plus its vacation and I didn't need to deal with the disturbance of a maintenance man disassembling the toilet.

Mosquitos: The rooms are not sealed tightly and as a result I must have killed 5 or 6 a night before bed.

Let me be very clear - You are paying for the location of this hotel, and that is all. It is one of the only hotels in Ao Nang that is directly across the street from the beach. And yes, it is across the street, not right on the beach. Most of the staff is terribly unfriendly and unwilling to be helpful. The manager is downright rude. This was shocking considering how friendly the Thai people are and how amazing the service was at other hotels we stayed at in Thailand. They tried to charge us $15 for a phone call that I used a calling card for, and it took both my husband and I arguing relentlessly to have the charge removed. They will help you book excursions, but you don't know exatly what they are booking and what the full details are. And they somehow make you feel uncomfortable asking for their help in the first place. The rooms have a minimalist feel to them. The hotel is a concrete bunker, which considering its location and in light of the 2004 tsunami does offer a feeling of security.
The one positive thing I can say about staying at this hotel is it did seem to carry some clout when we went on excursions. Because it is one of the more expensive hotels in Ao Nang, we seemed to get upgrades on our trips, and the only reason we can figure is they saw where we were staying.
If being across from the beach is most important to you and you are willing forgo friendly service, then by all means go ahead and stay here. But as someone who prefers to stay in the nicer hotels, this one was not worth it. I would have gladly stayed up the road in a place that treated their guests a little better.

We stayed at Sala Talay for a short 4 day break. Check in was smooth and staff were very polite. We had a pool access room and were glad we did. It got quite warm and it was just so nice not having to go far for a swim. The rooms have a very unique style, with concrete walls and floors, but it was quite nice and cooling. There was some maintenance work going on near our room and we asked to move due to the loud drilling and banging. Within an hour, a porter arrived at our door ready to move us to another room. We dined at the restaurant which was OK, but better food can be found outside. The views of the beach at night from the restaurant were nice. The place was a bit empty as it was not peak, and sometimes the pool bar etc was unmanned, but that wasn't a problem. The beach is just across the road and at low tide at sunset, it is absolutely beautiful. We were very happy with Sala Talay and would love to visit again.
