My gf and I just returned from a 2 night stay at the Sala. I chose this hotel because of the location and value. The location was the best feature as it was 1)across the street from the beach ( a quiet stretch- but you would not go in the water as it was muddy) and 2)at the end of the main street through Ao Nang. Its easy to walk or take a tuk tuk into town from this point.
Pool: We went for the pool room as we both enjoy swimming and thought it would be cool to access the pool from the room. It was unique, but if you are looking for privacy, this is not the place for you. The pool itself was clean and long enough to exercise.
Staff: I didn't find the staff to be inconsiderate as previous reviewers said. In fact they were pleasant, helpful and quiet. The language barrier is a factor so don't expect too much in the way of tourist advice or chit chat from the staff. They will quickly respond to requests for new towels and locking valuables.
Breakfast: The breakfast was barely edible. Other reviewers have highlighted this and they were right. Most 4 stars will put on a decent western and asian breakfast- they missed on both. This is unfortunate as we wanted to start our day with a good breafast but instead found ourselves craving lunch on both days almost 2 hours later.
Bar: The bar was way overpriced. The happy hour is only 1 hr- from 12-1pm. This is too bad as part of the fun of a vacation is chilling at the bar before/after dinner but not when its blatant robbery. There is a mini mart around the corner where beers are 1/3 the price.
Bathroom in our room: The toilet smelled of a urine smell like someone had relieved themselves on the back wall of the shower or behing the toilet. During the night my gf noticed the odor coming out of the bathroom, even with the bathroom door shut. I thought about complaining but realized its likely the pipes underneath the toilet. Plus its vacation and I didn't need to deal with the disturbance of a maintenance man disassembling the toilet.
Mosquitos: The rooms are not sealed tightly and as a result I must have killed 5 or 6 a night before bed.
