We have stayed in this hotel for 3 nights and all of us had great time over there. Hotel service was excellent. Staffs were always very friendly and smiling face which I have liked most :) Room was clean and tidy. Hotel decoration is simple but elegant. Hotel pool is not too big but as we had pool access room my kids enjoyed every bit of it. Location wise this hotel was great. Everything was very close by. For Ao nang it just took us 6/7 minutes by Tuk Tuk.
The thing I didn't like was Breakfast choices. As we don't eat pork our food choice became limited. But hotel guys provided us chicken sausages everyday.
Overall Sala Talay is nice hotel to stay.

This is a good hotel. No complaints.
The bed was not as hard as many are in Thailand. Quite good.
large room with bath and a nice balcony.
Staff very helpful and attentative. Example. When my taxi I had arranged (not with hotel) did not arrive the bellboy took initiative and quickly found one for me on his moped . Ok I tipped Well and I guess he calculated I would but it made our day much easier and more relaxing.
Hotel is on Nopharat beach a few minutes walk or 20 Bath effortless ride from busy Ao nang beach
Beach is Ok for a swim in high tide and perfect for a long walk in the morning. very shallow. perfect for small children.
Breakfast was good with limited Cheese choise as only real drawback.
Nopharat beach further along the road is a bit run down with some boarded up places mixed up with the open ones.
Pool was clean and HUGE. Food good but pricey. You will probably eat elsewhere for lunch and Dinner.

Stayed at Sala Talay Krabi in mid Feb 2010. Location is at the quieter part of Ao Nang beach so those party animal or shopaholic types will have to walk about 10 minutes to where the action is. Check in was a breeze, the staff were friendly, the room was pleasant and spotless. Very pleasant experience. The breakfast buffet was nothing to shout about so if you want more variety, go out and patronise any one of the dozens of eating places outside. I would definitely stay here again.

After staying a total of 13 nights at Sala Talay, we can now understand why the reviews are so mixed- it does that to you! The staff are universally friendly and helpful - the receptionists, tour guide , security guards- all greeted us with a welcoming smile but I think there are some hotel management issues.

For example, there is a nearby restaurant which apparently belongs to the hotel but nobody points it out or recommends it and it serves breakfast at a lower price than the hotel! The hotel breakfast is criticized in a number of reviews but I think I would say it is adequate and the hotel probably suffers little waste (which is therefore good in a world which wastes too much already) but presentation is really only adequate and the background jazz muzak every morning is infuriating. I have attached a breakfast photo so that people can see for themselves.Lucky for you, I can't add sound.

There is a gentle breeze through the breeze grill where they serve breakfast, you can hear and see the sea but you cannot help but hear the road which is a busy one between the hotel and the sea . Add in the jazz and its not a good sound mix. In the evenings, the bar has a pleasant solo guitarist who is clearly audible in the breeze grill above but still the piped jazz CD is there competing plus with occasional surprises- like a Christmas carol!!

So for relaxing by the sea( the hotels motto) you do need a certain insensitivity to noise. The website has a background sound of gentle seas. Don't be fooled- its "Muay Thai, Muay Thai- every Friday and Monday night at Ao Nang Krabi stadium- championship boxing" - blared through mega phones from the local advertising van every 15 minutes or so which even drowns out the jazz CD.

We did actually ask about who chose the music and why not play Thai music and were told its policy to have "international" music. ( Management again). God forbid one should go to Thailand for a Thai experience. Perhaps I am a little harsh - Ao Nang itself is pretty touristy but you don't get food like that, made to measure shirts in 24 hours and a great massage for £5 in Europe so in my view a hotel in Thailand should play to Thai strengths, not pander to some dubious idea of international one size fits all blandness.

Rooms are spacious and the blend of polished concrete with wood seems to work but very little drawer space is provided so we effectively had to use our suitcases for drawers - not what you expect of a hotel in this price bracket. There was no sign of the Thai "runners" and flowers that they show on their website and whilst the windows are big and let lots of light in, they clearly had not been cleaned in a while - this is what i mean by management issues. The staff are there and willing but have not been properly directed.

One of the attached photos is perhaps an analogy for the hotel- a superb flower arrangement that is in such a heavy wire cage that you hardly notice the flowers. As a further illustration, there was a "free discount" of 30% on certain meal arrangements but we asked 3 different people what this discount was and how it worked and got 3 different answers but we finally worked out that if you ate at the bar with the pleasant guitarist , you could have 30% off between 8 and 10 which meant that they had to bring food down from the kitchen upstairs , lay a seperate table etc whilst the breeze grill resto above was totally empty on a Saturday night .

A few reviewers mention the smell - there is a sewage problem in the area but I don't think its in the hotel itself. When you walk 300m to the left of the hotel and over a bridge into Ao nang, you'll see where the whiff is coming from. Something that will need to be fixed but was not overpowering in the hotel and part of the charms of going on holiday to exotic locations.

The resto next door that apparently belongs to the hotel may or may not be any good - we generally ate in Ao Nang itself but the landscaped gardens that I have now seen that are mentioned on the hotel website are somewhat questionable. I have attached a photo of the wasteland next to the hotel which I think all rooms on the second and third floors would see and the resto building is visible. hardly exotic but there is plenty of choice close by so I don't regard that as a negative - just an illustration of the marketing of the hotel .

On the plus side, the free wi-fi in room is very handy and we had a Gr Deluxe room with an outdoor day bed which was superb for realxing during the heat of the day. There is actually an area in the lawns of the hotel also set aside for shaded relaxation but it was not set up with mattresses and no-one pointed out what it was for so we saw NOBODY use it in two weeks! It was only on the last day or so that we realised what it was for. A pity really as its a clever feature to complement the excellent swimming pool.

Other reviewers comment on the lack of pool side drink service and I guess that sums it all up. Its a cleverly designed hotel but lacks Thai charm and finesse. I'd rate it a 3 to 3.5 star right now which with decent management could make it to 4* but it can never be a 5* partly because of its location next to the road . It is not a Sheraton or Sofitel which we had hoped would be its big plus i.e. a boutique special place but the big boys know how to do class better it seems.

The spa we never used because the pricing is simply mad - double or treble the nearby alternatives even when they did a two for one offer! A pity because it would be nice to have a massage and go directly back to one's room but the massage at the ThaiSeaSand Krabi Travel & holiday Massage place ( next to Kenneth hotel) costs so much less that it pays for a few extra cocktails so why would you pay so much more for the same thing?

We were disappointed with the level of cleanliness in this hotel. When we checked in we found towels were dirty and had to change them. (blood on one towel stains on other). Expected more for the rate we paid per night.

Service and friendliness of staff was fine and the pool was good if you wanted to do laps.

This hotel needs some tender loving care.
