“good location but service is terrible and staff are not honest”
Reviewed 9 January 2009

Location of hotel is convenient - near to shops, restaurants and beach..The deluxe room we booked was large and comfortable. No complaints about the room but the spa is in need of a renovation badly. Service in this hotel is non-existent. The buffet breakfast was entirely self service. The staff just stood around instead of offering coffee or tea or clearIng empty plates. We were also asked to pay for a pair of slippers that went missing even though we never took it and the only ones who entered our room was the housekeeper! If you are staying in this hotel, you should check the items in the room are accounted for because if anything goes missing you have to pay for it. It does not matter who took them. if it is missing you must pay! So ridiculous!

  • Liked — Location
  • Disliked — Service is terrible and the lady manning the front desk handled the missing slipper situation very badly

Absolutely brilliant place, a hidden gem. Located down a side street off the main road of Aonang, the hotel is a quiet oasis. Great location within easy walking distance of beach, cafes, restaurants, tours, etc. Nestled in amongst lush rainforest, the rooms are situated in separate buri's (four rooms per buri). We booked the standard cheapest rooms and they were spacious, very clean and beautifully decorated, with balconies overlooking the rainforest (just watch the mossies though!). The buri's are connected by rustic timber boardwalks which make the whole experience fun! The pool is great...not alot of room around it for lounging but great for cooling off after a busy day sightseeing. Breakfast is served in a gorgeous round outdoor hut - not a large selection, but there is an egg station along with the usual bread, cereal, fruits, etc. Staff were friendly, always saying hello when passing. We also got free fruit platters every day and welcome drink on arrival. We loved Krabi and will definately stay at Somkiet Buri next time!

We stayed in a deluxe room with 1 Queen size bed, and 1 King-single. The setting was beautiful, I absolutely loved the jungle theme and the pool. Unfortunately the hotel is a bit of a work in progress. As other reviews have stated, the breakfast is not great. The selection is limited and mostly covered in bugs. When we arrived the aircon was not working. On our last night the water was not working - no showers, and no water refill in the toilet! We were told this would last no more than an hour - it lasted all night. The TV reception was very poor, fortunately there was a DVD player in the room and someone had left an illegal copy of "The Happening". As for room service, it was very cheap and of good quality, however the surprise was having to pay cash on delivery, and not receiving any pre-warning of this arrangement.

We noticed a strange situation whereby some of the staff appeared to be living underneath the elevated rooms/pathways. We heard and saw them scurrying about, and even saw one fishing from the hotel pond - we did wonder if this was where the hotel sourced their fish from.

The staff were not the only thing scurrying about as we found out. We had left food on the balcony the previous night and found it nibbled the next morning. That night we decided to leave more food out, hoping to see a cute monkey or squirrel collect it, instead a giant rat emerged from a hole in the wall and absconded with the food.

To sum up, the hotel is fantastic in theory, but needs a lot of work. I would wait another 6-months before staying here. Give them some time to finish all construction work, and you may have a better stay.

We stayed at Somkiet Buri for 5 nights and really enjoyed our stay there. Before leaving for Thailand I researched this hotel and decided to try something a little different from the big hotels we normally like to stay in. We booked the deluxe room which had a king size bed and a double bed also has a little lounge area near a window which was very nice.

As other people have reviewed the breakfast is limited compared to the usual fare of bigger hotels. The cook did a mean omelete though, always with a smile. The house maids and bellboys were very friendly and helpful but the reception staff were a little indifferent and not very interested in making you feel welcome. This was not a problem as we really didn't need to speak to the front desk much during our stay.
The resort was very clean especially the rooms. They have started refurbishing the rooms as the bathroom is good but starting to show age in the tap fittings. One negative thing in the bathroom, it is a bath shower arrangement and the shower curtain does not keep the water from flowing onto the floor.

All in all I would certainly go back and stay there as we were very comfortable and easy access to everything at the end of the driveway.

  • Liked — The size of the room and the cleanliness.
  • Disliked — Shower and poor lighting for reading.

One of the mid-priced options in AoNang. I thought it was a great bargain.

The room had a double room. It was huge and clean. Beds were comfortable, but I like a firm bed.

This hotel is set about 50 meters off of the road that runs down the hill to the beach. The beach, restaurants, shops, longtail boats to Railay, agents to book tours around Phang Na Bay are all within a 2 to 20 minute walk. The hotel grounds are very nice and jungle like. Very quiet being off the main road and with all the trees and plants to buffer the noise. Yet all the typical beach town hustle and bustle is a short stroll away.

Only complaint, the air conditioner would periodically quit working. Told the front desk and they had someone come to work on it while we were away. But to no avail it still didn't operate consistently.

The service was very nice and did all they could to fufill any reasonable request. The breakfast was in an outdoor pavilion. Very nice setting, but be aware of mosquitos. Nice breakfast with buffet and made to order omelets.

  • Liked — Peaceful yet convenient location. Very Clean. Huge Room.
  • Disliked — Air Conditioner worked but not perfectly.

I stayed 3 nights in the hotel for my honeymoon, the room is large, clean and nice, lovely balcony. The hotel is like a little rain forest, very comfortable. Walking distance to shops, restaurant, pubs and also the beach. My criticism are the breakfast is below average, and i hope the lighting in the room can be brighter( no doubt is romantic), but is not good for reading. Overall, i really having a great time in this hotel and is value for money.

  • Liked — Serene atmosphere, peaceful and quiet but close enough to centre.

I've seen there are mixed reviews of this hotel, with many stating on the negative end that customer service was poor.

Just finished a quick weekend stay here, and was overall pleased for the price. Here's some noteworthy items:

First, booking was done with Latestays who did not send the info to the hotel. Luckily, they had a room, but wanted to charge me for the first night. They quoted their regular rate, and I simply told them (no paperwork) I received a discounted rate from the internet, and they without question acknowledged that rate. The next morning they made the phone calls and had everything settled with my booking before breakfast - plus point for service.

Went to the front desk with the following complaints on day 1 - A/C not cold, drain plug stuck in tub, and sink faucet has broken aerator thus spraying water everywhere. When I returned in the afternoon - done - another plus point.

I would advise for a good view to insist on a top floor room. I too had bottom, and even payed for the deluxe room, but was denied a great view and could only see all of the brilliant green jungle colors all around. Looking out of a window into the concrete jungle of Bangkok right now, this complaint seems a bit stupid.

There was a fair amount of construction going on, which did prevent me from sleeping in. Not something I really wanted to do anyway, but for those who prefer to relax at the resorts, this would have been a real bother. Not sure when this will all be finished - seems pretty eternal as a good deal of it invovled workers fixing the wooden paths everywhere.

Breakfast overall was dissappointing - not much choice and pretty well covered with insects if not eaten right when put out. I know it's difficult to avoid, but I've seen others make better effort.

Don't know about the pool, spa, dinner at the resort as I rarely "stay" at any hotel - just more a place to put a head down. Given that, I am overall satisfied with the resort - it's no Sheraton, but it was certainly good for the price.
