Went here at the beginning of August 14. I had read all about the resort, as I always do, so knew all about the speed boat to the hotel, the floating jetty and the monkey trail.
We arrived about 8pm so was dark when we got there, the jetty, although a bit wobbly, was easy enough to walk on, the staff are there to help if needed and were very helpful.
We were met by a lady who took us to the reception to check in, but as we had booked into the club room we were taken there to do this, the usual things were needed upon arrival, passports, signatures and credit card. Looking at some posts regarding credit cards, I have travelled to many places and stopped at a lot of hotels and the use of credit cards upon arrival is the norm, why do people feel the need to moan about this, it's to stop you running up a huge bill and not paying for it. I always pay cash when leaving and the cc is always unblocked/cancelled, no problem.
We got a buggy to our room, it was just a few steps from the beach, but on the top floor, the views were amazing. We did have a problem with the electric wooden shutters, I rang down to maintenance who came up within minutes to have a look, they asked us when we wanted it fixed as it was 11pm we said the day after would be fine. We went for breakfast the day after and we came back it had been mended. Reception rang when we were in to ask if everything was ok and if they were working, good to see that they followed up on this. You get complimentary water each per day, if you need more there is some in the minibar which I think is reasonably priced.
There are some other maintenance issues around the resort which have been mentioned in previous reviews, but to be honest they are just cracked steps which I didn't think posed a problem.
Monkeys? One of the reasons I chose this hotel apart from the location was the monkeys, we were there for 7 nights and it wasn't until the penultimate day that we saw any. They were at the bottom of the monkey trail eating the fruit that was left there. There was a lot of them. They didn't pose any threat to people, they just ate what they found then the majority just left and a couple went for a a stroll along the beach, one even passed us without even bothering with us and climbed a tree. When we got back to our room that afternoon one cheeky male was sitting on our balcony, when it saw us it came over to the window thinking we were going to open it, it wasn't happy that we didn't. He soon left without the contents of our mini bar. One thing to note is not to be scared of them. All they want is food, if you ignore them they will not bother you, just don't leave anything on your balcony or they will have it.
The monkey trail - The hotel advise you not to use this, there is a boat that you can get that you have to book, we didn't use the boat we decided to be brave and use the trail. We did it 3 times in our stay. All I can say is go slow, wear sensible shoes and take great care. It is doable but with caution. We never encountered monkeys on the trail, but it is very steep at both ends with widely spaced wooden slats, and just a rope to hold on to. There is a relatively flat bit in the middle but as we found out gets very, very muddy and slippy when wet. It only takes about 10 to 15 mins to do it but once you get to the Aonang side you have to climb over rocks and negotiate a small river that's been carved in the sand (it was rainy season when we went). I'm glad that we did it though, but if you are going to try it please were sensible shoes. You also have to sign out and back in before you go on to the monkey trail.
Club room- first of all I have to mention Cha, Sa and Dang who looked after us in the club room, they were fantastic. They all made us feel very welcome and remembered what we liked to drink and eat. They are a credit to the hotel. Some people have mentioned about the lack of English speaking staff, we found most could and the rest got by, don't forget you are in Thailand, learn some of their language, even if it's just the basics, we did, and it helped.
There was one morning that it had been raining hard and the club room was full, which was very unusual, so we had to eat breakfast in the main breakfast room, on the one table that was left, we were told by a member of staff that it was because people were going into the club room as there was no room in the other area because of the rain. This was the only thing that let it down, we had paid extra for the privilege of being in the club room so was a bit annoyed that we couldn't even get in for breakfast.
As we had already booked half board we obviously didn't have to pay for our meals while we were there, but looking at the prices of the meals I thought they were relatively cheap, if you go into Aonang then you can get cheaper meals, but you are in a hotel and as such I thought that the meals were reasonable. The only restaurant we didn't dine in was the Japanese one as non of us like sushi, but the others were excellent, with very good service, the one thing we didn't like was the two guitar players who would come round to your table playing and singing, while you were eating. They stood right up to the table and I thought it was quite intrusive. The piano player on the other hand was fab. It was so nice to have some music while eating that wasn't intruding on your meal.
The pool area was lovely, there are 2 tiers and third which is like a jacuzzi. There is also a quite, reflective pool that hardly anyone went into, apart from us, it was lovely, there are sun beds all around the resort, so had no problem getting 3 together but there are still people putting their towels on them very early then disappearing, get a life, your in Thailand not Benidorm. There are sunbeds on the grass, on the edge of the beach and round the pools, enough for everyone.
You don't need to bring towels, they have a little hut where you can go and sign towels out, you can also have towels if you are going on a trip out, they are a different colour.
We hired a private long tail boat, from the excursion desk that took us to Hong Island, the person who took us was fantastic, he took us to the lagoon and helped us find star fish, amazing day.
They do need a proper shop in the hotel. There is one but they just sell things like snorkel gear, clothes, a few little souvenirs and toiletries. They need to sell food and drink and other bits. It is a very basic small shop.
While there i overheard someone mention about the dirty water in the sea, and also it's been mentioned in past posts, if you go at this time of year it is rainy season and the waves are much bigger and as such brings up the sand from the bottom which makes the sea look cloudy. We still went in and enjoyed it, just remember where you are and the time of year it is. If you want blue calm waters go somewhere else.

Sorry it's been so long but I wanted to try and get everything in, all in all fantastic hotel, wonderful staff, amazing setting and excellent club room. Would definitely recommend.

Dear sugarpuff

Thank you for sharing your comments following your recent stay at our resort.

It was a pleasure to read you enjoyed your stay and thank you for explaining the issue of a credit card in check-in for other readers, which is as you explained very normal and the standard practice of all international hotels.

I appreciate your comments on the maintenance and also your comment about the use of the Club lounge during the rain, which we normally don’t do, I think some of the staff panicked this morning and thought it was a good option rather than let other guests wait, however we have already discussed this and provided the team with some alternatives.

Thank you for acknowledging the efforts of Khun Dang, Sa and Cha in the club lounge, they certainly are stars for us.

Yes the wildlife around and within the resort is truly unique and I am please this added to your overall experience.

Once again thank you for your generous support and recognition and we look forward to welcoming you back when you are next in Krabi.

Kind regards, David Martens

We arrived on the 25th of July to torrential rain, and were met at the Pier by a lovely attendant ( whose name fails me ) we were provided with rain ponchos, I must say a god send at the time . The speed boat was rather full and a little squeeze with guests heading back to the Hotel and luggage from arriving guests. We set off against the waves and eventually arrived at the floating Jetty..... Wow, it was like a ride at Alton Towers , obviously the Jetty was riding with the waves , I was a little concerned as I had a young daughter . But help was at hand with plenty of Hotel Staff to help each and everyone off the boat and escorted to safety of solid ground . We had a couple of serious downpours within 24hours but we were not deterred. We woke the next morning and had a visit from the resident Monkeys - be advised make sure you lock your doors, as they will come in and take what they want. One lady actually got bit . Upon arrival Staff make you aware of every eventuality. The Restaurants were great and the food was superb. The actual location is breath taking . We did venture into Ao Nang by way of the Boat ( tip - make sure you pre book in order that your not disappointed if you can't get your specific time ) also we took the MonkeyTrail ( not for the faint hearted ) we also walked around the rock at low tide . Ao Nang is ok and pretty much like what you would expect from a tourist point of view . We did have to search for quality Restaurants ........ Back to the Centara , We found almost every member of Staff most courteous and tentative in particular Greg ( I believe he was a trainee ) from the outside bar made our holiday most relaxing as he adhered to our every request, nothing was too much to ask and his smile everyday was most warming come rain or shine , Greg, keep up the good work you are an absolute credit to the Centara Grand , and credit goes out to the Centara well done to you all.

Room Tip: The Beach Villas are fantastic .

Set on it’s own private beach and accessible only by boat, the surrounding fortress of Limestone cliffs with hotel nestled bellow give it the look of an exclusive club on a private island.Located on Pai Plong Bay with 500 meters of private white sand beach in the foreground and breathtaking cliffs as a backdrop it's a special location. The rooms, in traditional Thai style, are spacious, with large balcony, rainwater shower, giant bath and a view to die for. Some of the Islands inhabitants include monkeys, gibbons and lace monitors which provide children with endless amusement.
The pool area with caves and water falls set over three levels had our children declaring the pool ‘awesome’, whilst we grownups made similar declarations about the cocktail menu. The array of dining options made catching the hotel boat to Ao Nang obsolete. Breakfast in the morning at Lotus court restaurant overlooking a Koi pond and suspension bridge was a hit with the kids. They could feed the Koi and look for lizards whilst enjoying the extensive breakfast buffet. Lunch at ‘On the rocks’ beachside restaurant is a casual affair perfect for remaining poolside. Japanese restaurant Hagi with Teppanyaki bar was great fun and dining Al fresco at Rim Saai for authentic Thai and taking it up a notch with the delectable a la carte dinner menu at Lotus meant the dining options were extensive. Sailing, snorkeling, Kayaking or my favourite sport ‘Day Spa-ing’ are all on offer. There’s a kids club with games room and great paths around the resort for morning walks. We took a tail boat around to Railay only ten minutes away, which the kids adored, but had us realising how special our accommodation really was. It’s impossible not to be impressed by Centara Grand Krabi and the only distressing part of the entire trip was leaving.

Room Tip: Ocean view room up high

We loved everything about this hotel, though our journey with Centara unfortunately got off to a bad start. The hotel is located so you can only reach it by boat. The hotel has a shuttle service around once an hour, which is ok. But when we arrived at the pier in Ao Nang (after a long journey!), we were met by Centara staff who could inform us that the boat could pick us up in 1,5 hours!! 2 other families arrived at the pier at the same time as us, and had to wait as well. We find it very strange, that the staff couldn't just call the hotel, and ask them to send the boat (which was just parked at the hotel, doing nothing) for us. The boat ride is only like 7 minutes, so it's not very far!

But when we finally arrived at the hotel, we were amazed by the beautiful surroundings and the fantastic hotel. When you don't have heavy luggage, it is easy to reach Ao Nang city by using the Monkey Trail from the hotel. This takes around 10 minutes if you are fit. Just be aware that there are no lights on the trail at night, so bring a flash light! Regarding the monkeys on the resort, we weren't bothered by them. We were warned to lock our doors and not leave food out, but the only time we saw a (and only 1) monkey, was on the monkey trail going to Ao Nang, so it wasn't a problem at all.
We will definitely come back to this lovely hotel.

Thank you for sharing your comments following your recent stay at our resort.

I appreciate your comments about the boat transfers however the complimentary speedboat transfers has to operate to a schedule for various reasons including the number of trips the boats can take before re-fueling etc..

I was pleased that once you did arrive at the resort you saw how truly spectacular our location is. Of course our location creates many unique operational challenges and whilst we endeavor to meet these challenges, on occasion we do not.

The visits by the monkeys to the resort are unpredictable and there can be time swhen you see many on a daily basis and then there are times where you may not see them for many days.

Once again thank you for your kind support and recognition and we look forward to welcoming you back when you are next in Krabi.

We got off to a disapointing start, The day that we arrived, the staff said that it was the worst weather they had encounted in the 8 years they had been open. The Strong winds made it very difficult to disembark from the speed boat onto the floating jetty/pontoon. My wife and freind fell and had to be helped to shore. Once we had checked in things started to pick up. The rooms were exellent and well serviced. Breakfast was one of the best i've had (they had a man playing the piano). The pool was good with plenty of sun beds.
Because of the strong winds the beach and sea was dirty!!! ( as the hotel was" land locked" without any road access as they say it has to go somewhere!!!).
Because the sea was so rough for the fist 4 days we were "traped" in the hotel so it was good that the food in all of the restraunts was good.
What we did like was the diverse wild life, monkeys, lizards, snakes, eagles and fish were all seen in the 7days of our stay.
