“Good location poor service”
Reviewed 24 February 2009

This hotel has a spectacular location and the rooms were great. The hotel realy needs to have a very close look at the services it provides. Staff were not helpfull, food was very average and way overpriced. The transport to Ao Nang was a shambles. They obviuosly want to keep the guests at the Hotel to pay over the top prices for meals. We also had to wait until 5.30 pm to get into our room after arriving at the Hotel at 1.30 pm.
A positive was the great pool.

I would recommend this hotel to couples and families! We were lucky enough to stay in one of the rooms with a jacuzzi, which I would highly recommend. Watching the sun set whilst sipping a drink in the jacuzzi is such a treat!

The hotel is amazing and the rooms are spotless and incredibly spacious. The hotel is situated in a cove directly on the beach, and the views are breathtaking.

If you can walk to the main resort (by the Monkey trail over the side of the mountain - approx 15min walk) then you will find cheap food and drink which is really tasty. The hotel is incredibly overpriced. The walk over the trail is good fun and the monkey's are really friendly. But the wooden steps are very rickety, so wear sensible footwear . There's also a boat that runs for free from the hotel to the main resort, but it takes you way past it and then you have to pay or a tuk tuk (approx £2-4) back down to the centre.

The only negative comment I would make about the hotel, is that we were out there when the protesters closed Bangkok airport, and the hotel could of been more helpful. They had the tourists in their hands and knew it.

The very high prices and poor quality food force you to walk to Ao Nang every day where there is a good choice at reasonable prices. We were made very welcome at the Last Fisherman Bar which is on the beach and would certainly recommend the barbecue. After a couple of visits we were made to feel like regulars and the barmen new our drinks. The free boat was always fully booked so we had to walk the treacherous route over the headland. The so called path was more like a ladder in places, it was very poorly maintained and the handrail was insecure. At the approach to Ao Nang beach there was no handrail at all and the drop was about 2.5m. At low tide it is possible to wade around the headland which we did twice but if the sea was choppy this was not really an option.

We spent very little time at the hotel due to the prices. The brochure says that all the rooms are ocean facing which is strictly true but the view from our room was obscured completely by the building in front. One of the most irritating things we found was the number of steps we had to climb just to get to the room. The wooden boardwalk had been designed by a sadist as it passed within 2m of our bedroom door after climbing three flights but we had to climb another 32 steps up and then another 32 steps down to get to the door.

On our penultimate day the mini bar was not filled up so we bought a couple of beers in Ao Nang and took them back. On the day we left they sent a maid to the boat we were departing in and held up the boat until we had paid her for the two beers we had bought in Ao Nang! Unbelievable for a 5 star hotel. As we were holding up the other passengers we just paid up and didn't argue.

On the 10th of February we decided to have a meal at the hotel as it was our wedding anniversary. We opted for the Thai restaurant as we had got married in Thailand four years earlier. The starter was appalling, I had spring rolls which tasted of nothing but dirty cooking oil and my wife had Thai fish cakes which had the consistency of rubber. When the main course came it was cold and I had to send two of the dishes back to be reheated. We had a bottle of wine for £24.00 which can be bought in the UK for £4.00.

After the meal we went down into the cocktail bar which was deserted, the staff were friendly enough and told us that it is always like that. A couple of people came in later then went after one drink. Once the happy hour finished we left.

We did enjoy our holiday but this was mainly due to the friendliness of the people in Ao Nang, if we go back we will stay in one of the many decent looking hotels there.

It seemed to me that the hotel was trying a bit too hard as they constantly had theme nights on but no one went because the prices were too high. If they reduced their prices and improved their food people would spend more time there.

We found the staff extremely friendly although their English was not too good (better than my Thai though!). On our departure day the zip on my bag broke and the bell boy found some parcel tape and did a temporary repair on it which was much appreciated.

I would not book this hotel again mainly because of the poor quality of the path over to Ao Nang, be warned.

I enjoyed several relaxing days at the Centara Grand in early November 2008. Overall it was a gorgeous hotel with very attentive staff. We stayed in a premium deluxe ocean facing club room and the view from our room was amazing.

There are a few unique aspects of the Centara Grand that you should know before you go there:

1. Accessibility - The hotel is only accessible by boat or by a steep path that winds over a cliff. The path connects the hotel with the beach in Ao Nang. It is approximately a 15 minute walk, but be warned that the path is very steep and narrow. I would not recommend it for children or the elderly. The path is lit at night but once you get to the Ao Nang beach, it is quite dark until you get to town. However, we did not feel unsafe at all. Also, during the day there are lots of monkeys in the trees and occasionally on the path itself.
The hotel runs a boat shuttle service to the Ao Nang pier 4 or 5 times a day. You have to sign up for the shuttle service in advance. We had no trouble getting on the shuttle at the times we wanted, but the hotel was not crowded when we were there. The shuttle boat seats less than 20 people so I can imagine that it would be difficult to get a reservation if the hotel was very crowded. Once you get to the Ao Nang pier, you have to either walk into town (kind of far) or take a tuk-tuk that costs 40 baht per person.

2. Check-in/out process - the check-in location is in the town of Ao Nang. Once you are checked-in, they drive you to a boat which takes you to the hotel. I've read several reviews with complaints of a frustrating, long check-in process. However, I did not experience this. We were offered drinks and snacks at the check-in location and once we had filled out the necessary paperwork, we were immediately taken to the boat. The quick service was probably because we were the only ones checking-in at the time.
When you check-out, the hotel determines what time you will be taken by boat back to Ao Nang. If your flight doesn't leave until later in the day, you can't stay at the hotel. You have to go back to the check-in facility in town.

3. Club Lounge - We paid extra to have access to the Club Lounge. It was not worth the extra money. The employees in the Club were not friendly and refused to give us bottled water several times during our stay. We were told we had to sit and drink the water in the lounge. The snacks were small and the computers (for the free 1/2 hour of internet) were always occupied.

4. Restaurants/Tours - The restaurants at the hotel are very overpriced. There are plenty of good restaurants in town at a fraction of the price. The only meal we ate at the hotel was breakfast (because it was included in our room rate) and lunch one day by the pool. The breakfast was fantastic - lots of variety and very good.
Also, the tours offered by the hotel are also very expensive. Go into Ao Nang and book your tour directly with one of the many tour companies. You will save a lot of money. The one aspect of the hotel that seemed reasonable was the dive center. The people there were very helpful and the scuba diving prices seemed very reasonable.

5. Room rate - Check the website often because the hotel changes their rates often. I cancelled and rebooked my reservation 3 times because they kept offering better rates. I was very happy with the room rate I ended up.

Overall, I was very happy with my stay at the Centara Grand and would definitely recommend it for a memorable experience in Thailand.

After a fantastic stay in The Peninsula in Bangkok and 3 days in the Mandarin Oriental in Chang Mai, this was due to be the icing on the cake with a week by the sea in an 'exclusive' setting. For 16000 Bht per night (350 pounds per night!!!) we were given a dirty room, doors wouldn't lock, staff generally not bothered. The state of the decor is not at all what appears in the pictures - room was very tired in every way The evening meal which came to over 100 pounds was really awful. Luckily, we got away the following morning (only way to leave resort is by boat) as we explained we were not prepared to pay more than the Dorchester in London for a very average 3 star hotel. We read reviews of several places on trip advisor and came to the Sofitel in Krabi which is all of the following: spotlessly clean, luxurious, enormous pool, brilliant staff, great food, fantastic rooms and facilities... 5 star in every way. The relief of escaping the Centara cannot be put into words! Without doubt, the worst hotel I have ever been to.

We stayed at the Centara for a few days of our honeymoon and I would never go back. The settings are beautiful but everything is difficult, you can only get to the hotel via boat and they really sting you if you want to leave, they have a shuttle boat which goes to Ao Nang but they can only get about 10 people on it, once it is full (which is booked days in advance) they charge you 10 times the price of a long boat for a water taxi which when it turned up was a long boat, crazy

Lets start with the good....Amazing Location and views with private beach and lovely large rooms. Ok, the bad.....I found the hotel quite expensive (2 banana smoothies £10.00), As other reviewers have written, there are lots of niggley rules that grate on you. The check in Ao-Nang was fine, but just seemed a pointless waste of time. The cliff walk is fine, but its a very rickety wooden staircase for able bodied people only. Most of all I found the hotel to be very tired looking. They have lots of wooden furniture, by the pool, in the restaurants and on your verandas and also in the shower (yes, in the shower), but none of it is maintained, so its all weather faded/damaged. The tiles set into the tops of the tables, many of them were cracked/smashed. Some of the rope detail around the the Fish ponds was either missing or damaged. I could go on and on....Overall we found the hotel quite souless with no atmosphere whatsoever. Given that its not that easy to go elsewhere because of the loaction, you would think that hotel would be made to feel a little more welcoming. Its not, so we went out every night into Ao-Nang, we usually got the complimentary boat in and paid for a Longtail back for around £6-8 for a 3 min boat ride. Be sure to book the free shuttle boat early, as the hotel was only half full when we were there and a couple of times we were told the boat was full, which is very annoying. As for the food, we ate 1 dinner and 1 lunch at the hotel, 3 out of the 4 dishes we had were of a pretty poor standard, however I spoke with a few other residents and their thoughts re the food were mixed. On the whole I was disapointed with the Centara, I dont think its worth its 5 stars and I wouldnt go back or recommend it to a freind.
