“It just gets better, many upgrades!”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

We have been to Estero Beach Resort more than a dozen times. I've already written a review, which contains many tips, and useful information (so check it out), but some things have changed, so here's an update!

Our most recent trip was just a couple of weeks ago. The drive was a little different due to part of the "cuota" being closed. The first two toll booths are still open, and during the first week of July, it was $2.50 per car at each booth. A few miles after the 2nd toll booth, there is a detour to the free road. Don't worry, the detour is clearly marked "Ensenada Libre." The detour takes you through the hills of Baja which has it's own kind of beauty, and best of all, it's free! An upside of the detour is that it takes you near the beautiful Guadalupe Valley- known as the Napa Valley of Baja. There are plenty of vineyards where you can go wine tasting, and sometimes take tours of the wineries. (I'll get back to wineries later). The downside to the detour is that it is one lane in each direction for the entirety of the drive, and passing other cars can be dangerous. Just sit back and enjoy the drive- it's relatively short, and safety is most important. The Mexico federal government promises the cuota will re-open no later than September 15, so at that point, you can take the beautiful toll road all the way down to Ensenada.

Once we arrived at Estero, the staff was as friendly as always! The grounds and landscaping are beautifully manicured and well maintained, as well as any resort I've seen. The rooms have all been upgraded! Some of the upgrades include air conditioning in every room(!!!), new carpeting and bedding, flat screen tv's, coffee makers in each room, shower upgrades, etc. Not all rooms have all of these upgrades, but it is a work in progress- fantastic, nonetheless.

As far as safety, there is a guard shack at the front of the property, and another guard shack about 1/4 mile down the driveway by the front desk. We have always felt safe in Baja, but the guard shacks at Estero make it that much better.

The pool is as beautiful as ever, and the swim-up bar makes it feel like vacation. They usually have pineapple and/or coconut drinks you can order! These are great for pictures.

The views of the ocean are the best for any hotel in Ensenada. The beach to the north/west (El Faro beach) is a sandy beach where it is great to take walks, and early in the morning when the tide is down, seashells are scattered along the beach, making it a unique experience.

Amenities at Estero include: Seadoos for rent (with a bay convenient for riding on the ocean), quads for rent (and a track on property), tennis courts, ping pong tables, bikes and kayaks for rent, and tours (wine tours, trips to La Bufadora, Las Canadas-which is a place you can zipline, etc) you can take. The staff at the front desk are extremely helpful guiding you to what you would like to do. Linda is very friendly and very knowledgeable about wineries!

TIP: if you plan on going wine tasting and you have a particular winery in mind that you would like to visit, call in advance to make sure they are open to the public that day. They are sometimes closed for private events. Otherwise, there are many options for wine tasting as you will see once you get there. Also, if it is warm at the beach, it is probably hot in the valley, so try wine tasting on a moderate temperature day.

We have a new favorite taco stand called the Big Burro which is straight out of Estero's driveway, past the guard shack on the left side of the road. The grilled shrimp tacos are amazing, fish tacos are great, and their Big Burro is far too much for one person to eat! The family who owns it is very friendly, and we look forward to seeing them on all of our trips to Estero.

The restaurant at Estero is very consistently good. There is indoor, and well as outdoor seating, depending on your preference. Occasionally, they have special nights where they barbecue outside and have live bands playing cover songs. Sunday there is a large buffet brunch with many options! The sushi we have had there has been good as well.

It is worth noting that cruise ships now offer an excursion to Estero Beach for a pool day four times per week. That means the pool bar is open most days.

This is hands-down our favorite vacation spot. It is very reasonably priced for all of the amenities!
It is great for families, or for couples who want to get away! I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Room Tip: Downstairs rooms are great for close access to the pool and restaurant. Upstairs have a little bett...

With the right room, near the pool, this was a great place to stay. A bit off the beaten path, but it would be difficult to find a friendlier or more beautiful location. Comfortable pool area and pleasant, swim up bar. A $99 per night special made it easy on the wallet. I'm agreed with the other positive reviews of this hotel.

Room Tip: Room 209 was very comfortable and located in a building I'd recommend.

This hotel has been around 30-40 years but you would never know it by the way it is maintained.

The restaurant has some of the best food I have eaten in Mexico.

The shrimp omelet is to die for. The traditional huevos rancheros are also very good. The dinner menu is excellent. The pricing is just a little on the high side but the quality of the meal is worth the price and the service is always excellent.

Room Tip: Even though they cost a little more try for an ocean front or ocean view room. the prices do go up...

Didn't realize this place was so popular...stayed in room 324. They also have RV camping (cheap). It's a gated resort with a view of seals and dolphins! I was there just recently when the seals just had pups..It is sooooo beautiful, I didn't want to leave. They have a museum, also bike and kayak rentals..They have a tennis court also, which is in better condition than some of the courts I've played on in California. It's on an ocean inlet where you can catch all sorts of fish. I met the daytime bartender at the restaurant and bar. His name is Miguel, who is a laugh a minute. He speaks perfect english and spanish. I developed a special bond with him and he helped me with my spanish. He also gave me the ins and outs of the area. From the bar you have a view of the water with a sand bar where the seals bask in the sun, until the tide comes in. Plenty of outdoor seating as well. The sand bar disappears, but the seals move across the water to the Island where they can still be seen with their pups. They have fishing cabanas that protrude into the inlet..I did try my luck at fishing when the tide came up. I didn't have too good of luck, but people around me were catching fish. They also have a beautiful pool with a bar in the center of it..What a great place.
I drove my Mercedes down and had concerns about parking in the streets of Ensenada. I've heard stories about Mexico. I was pleasantly surprised after a few days of driving around Ensenada. It is NOTHING like the stories I've heard. The people are genuine beautiful people. They are very helpful and honest even though they don't have wealth, they're wealthy in culture and honesty. I love the people there! I feel totally comfortable down there. There are Wal-marts, Home depots and all the fast food restaurants that you see in the states. Including Applebees'. I can see myself retiring there! The cost of living is incredible..
You don't have to leave Estero beach if you don't want to. They have everything you need. If you visit there, be sure to ask for Miguel at the restaurant, tell him Nick from California said hi!! I can't stress enough what a wonderful place it is....Meeting Miguel was one of my highlights of the trip...I welled up with tears as I was leaving to go back home...

Room Tip: There is RV camping with a view of the water and lagoon. There are rooms on the beach with great vie...

Estero is located right on the water in Ensenada. The rooms are clean and the staff friendly. There is a nice pool, restaurant and often live music on the weekends. It is about 15 minutes south of downtown Ensenada. There are regular hotel rooms, some that surround the pool, and other "suites" that are separate from the hotel which will allow pets. Definitely recommended.

Room Tip: The oceanfront suites have sliding glass doors that lead to your own patio with an ocean view.

Two friends who were visiting us from England said they wanted to go to see a bit of Mexico for a few days. We took them to stay at this hotel for 2 nights and they were in heaven. You feel like you are in a different world as soon as you drive into the grounds. We had rooms 108 and 109 beautifully furnished, very large with a patio that had a view straight out onto the ocean. We sat at the water front restaurant /bar with margaritas and watched the sunsets, we swam in the pool and luxuriated in the jucazzi. The food and the service was great. They even opened up the museum and gave us a private tour as it was officially closed on that day. Make sure you visit the museum it's really worth it. We left for our wine tour feeling relaxed and very happy. I would highly recommend this hotel and we will certainly be back.
Thank you
Maggie and Alf Hope

Room Tip: The Mayan rooms are facing the ocean with big patios.
