“Sustainable cuisine in a wonderful setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2014

Malva is a recent arrival to the thriving restaurant scene of Ensenada and Valle de Guadalupe. The restaurant is run by Roberto Alcocer, a true son of Ensenada. Roberto's training and creativity in Malva are living proof that sustainability is not only good for the environment, it is also very tasty.
Most of the ingredients, now including the wines, are raised or cultivated on the premises, and the seafood is brought from Ensenada's markets.
We, 12 adults and three children, had a fixed seven course meal. To that we must add a little appetizer and an "exit" dish as Roberto calls it.
Food was fresh and varies. The "escolar" was perfect, the salads fresh, and the dry lamb cooked in a brick oven was a new and fresh approach to lamb, which usually has a game taste, not liked by everyone.

The restaurant serves the wines from its vineyards, and some local and small brewery beers.

I reccomend reservations in advance, to make sure there is enough food prepared for the day.'

Although the Ensenada region has many new, exciting and good restaurants, Malva is outstanding in the way it combines in a very creative and tasty way regional ingredients and a first class attention. I counted more that seven staff present serving our party. We went on a Tuesda, a day when the restaurant is closed. Malva will break the rule and open for parties of five or bigger and a fixed menu.

Don't miss this opportunity of combining a great landscape with an unforgettable meal.

“A great new relaxed restaurant in Valle de Guadalupe”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2014

A lot of the restaurants in Valle de Guadalupe are great, but can take forever and are quite expensive - such as Laja and Corazon de Tierra. We ate here twice for lunch on a recent trip to Valle de Guadalupe and loved it - the food was delicious and the service was fast. The restaurant only opened about 4 months ago and it has seating outside in front of the grill where all of the food is made and also some seating inside. The restaurant is situated just outside of San Antonio de Las Minas and there is a nice view from the seating area over the surrounding vineyards.
There is also a wall covered with graffiti that I was admiring when we first sat down. The chef noticed my interest and explained to me that locals kept saying that his place was really upscale, but he wanted people to understand that it is more relaxed - it is an open outdoor kitchen with a wood burning oven - so he decided to have the wall graffitied. The result looks awesome and definitely gets the point across that this is a more relaxed place.

The menu is currently only in Spanish, but the chef speaks English and will explain all of the dishes to you if you don't speak the language. The first time we went we had four courses and the next time we just chose a few of the courses we didn't get before. I am sure I have forgotten some details about the meal, but I will try to list the courses here to give an idea of the food.

When you arrive they serve you freshly toasted bread that they toast in the wood fired oven. The appetizer was a small corn tortilla with black bean paste and peanuts topped with rosemary and cilantro flowers and a slightly spicy sauce, the first course was a salad with arugula and edible flowers, the third was liver tacos, the fourth lamb seared with a black bean flour and for desert we had orange panna cotta and four ice creams - popcorn, horchata, caramel and goat cheese. On our next visit we had the octopus in buttermilk, the corn soup with cheese gorditas, quail and the lamb again (it was just too good). To drink there is wine and craft beer, but we had been wine tasting earlier in the day so we settled on the orange and rosemary agua fresca.

Overall, the food was great, the people were nice and the service was quick. I would definitely recommend it to people visiting the valley!
