“Incredible gem”
Reviewed 6 April 2014

We booked La Concha because it was affordable. When we arrived, we were shocked at how beautiful and clean the place was! The staff was beyond incredibly friendly and helpful, the private beach is gorgeous and relaxing, the rooms all face the ocean and were very comfortable and roomy. We were just blown away with what a wonderful little affordable resort this was. Just amazing!!

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean. I would ask for one on the 3rd floor to get the best view!

This beach hotel on the outskirts of La Paz isn't for everyone. If you're comfortable in a sterile, unimaginative, air-conditioned chain hotel, then you'll be disappointed. But if you're looking for something unique, friendly, and funky, La Concha is for you. The staff are wonderfully nice and helpful, the food is good, pool and dock bar are lovely, and the beach - though marginal and not very good for swimming -- is not too far from Balandra - one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. And the Malecon with its nightlife and esplanade strolls, is minutes away.

Room Tip: In March 2014 there was a lot of construction in the hills across the way, so any room on the east w...

First, the price and location are great, we had a balcony and fridge. It was a great escape from the Carnaval crowd because its outside the city, and you need a car to get there. But the concept of "beach" is not what I expected... Full of seaweed and some garbage from random hippies down the coast, but it saves itself because of the nice beach chairs and palapas that let me enjoy the view. Seemed a little unnecessary to charge you extra to use their kayaks. I was so looking forward to the beautiful pool, however it was gross with things like bugs and leaves and who knows what else floating on top all the time. The most annoying thing about this place is the a/c unit has a little box over the control so you can only turn it on or off or turn the temp up or down. This means that you cannot set it to run constantly and it shuts off when it gets To the desired temp and then turns on again later, etc. this on/ off pattern continues the entire night and every time ours turned on, it made this weird rattling noise and kept us awake all night. I wish we would have changed rooms, but we were only there 2 nights so whatever. Also we were at the end of the hotel where all the service people are and they start working at like 7am with cleaning and delivery trucks, etc. needless to say, we didn't get a single good nights sleep during our time there. I told them at reception when we checked out, the guy just shrugged.

Yes, this place is olden. No elevator makes getting to your room a drag. The drawer is busted on the dresser and good lord, would you think a vent is a good thing in the bathroom? It has it's drawbacks but at the price I thought La Concha was just fine. The sunsets by the pool were spectacular. Drop a few bucks extra on that bar tip and get a ticket to the booze moon. I say YUM! on those piña coladas. The restaurant was just ok to our surprise. Service was Luke warm and slow. So, rooms are ok, poolside and palm shade was fantastic. I'd stay here again.

Room Tip: Choose ground floor if you need accessibility.

They gave us a special deal (108) for the honeymoon suite which had a jacuzzi. The room was cheesy, smelled bad and we were grossed out by the jacuzzi (although it had a romantic mosquito net over the bed). The only shower was a hand wand which was busted. The person who recommended it said they had kayaks you could take for a morning tour - when we asked, they replied that the fleet was disabled except for one working kayak. The beach views are nice.
Upon checkout I informed management (before I wrote this review) and asked what they could offer to restore our experience. They offered us free breakfast, except they already made us pay cash for our breakfast as they would not allow charges to our room (despite a credit card on file??). With that option gone, we asked if there were anything else they could do and they responded that was all they could offer, so we thanked them and politely left.

Wife and I, along with another couple, recently stayed at La Concha Beach Resort. No mas! The nicest feature about the place is the lobby. It's all downhill after that. While "location" may be everything, in the case of La Concha it's the only thing. The rooms are totally worn-out, the bedding and towels are thread-bare, and the physical plant so in need of repair one would hardly know where to start.

There wasa a two inch gap between the bottom of our room's door and the threshold. Fortunately, we had brought a beach towel that we stuffed in the opening to keep the critters out while we were in the room. The bed itself was as hard as a rock, with a top mattress that was some kind of rubber-like material. It was so low to the ground that getting out of bed was not second nature.

Many of the chairs around the bar pool were so worn and dirty, we felt uncomfortable sitting in them ... both from a sanitary and structural point of view.

While many rooms are designated non-smoking", this is not enforced. The other couple had to change rooms when the smoke from a neighboring room infiltrated their nearby room.

Until and unless a major renovation is undertaken, likely at great expense, this place should be avoided. Sadly, I suspect, it may have once been a glorious resort. Felt bad for the wait staff.

We had read many mixed reviews about this place and other hotels in the area when we planned our dive trip in the Sea of Cortez in September 2013. We are very pleased with our choice in La Concha! The dive shop is only a few steps away and although the hotel itself is showing its age a little, we found it to be perfectly suitable and comfortable. We had a balcony overlooking the sea and the pool area, in room fridge and flat screen tv. The room service was fast, friendly and they seemed to try and accommodate you as best as possible. It's not a super fancy mega resort, but it's low key and has a lot of charm. I hope to return again soon. The diving exceeded our expectations. Mantas, sea lions, whales, dolphins were daily sightings. But we did not see any hammerheads :-(
