“Hotel and Condominiums are separate proprties”
Reviewed 25 May 2010

The La Concha Condominiums are located next door to the La Concha Hotel. These are two very different and separate properties. However, if you stay at the Condominiums you have access to all the amenities of the hotel but the Condominiums are owned by individual homeowners and managed by it's own staff at the direction of the homeowner's association. The Condominium's pool grounds and gardens are in impeccable condition. The condos that are available for rent vary depending on the taste of the condo owner but most are second homes to folks from the western states of North America and are roomy, well maintained and nicely furnished. These are people's homes first and rental property second. Just thought it was important to distinguish between the two, for folks reading these reviews.

Very beautiful view, however, the two bedroom suite was very outdated! Needs new kitchen, bathroom was so-so! Living room couch, hide-a-bed not clean, so I put a sheet on it! Outdoor patio furnishings torn & dirty! Didn't want to sit on them. No blender, toaster didn't work right! On the upside, food & service was good! Friendly staff!
Twisted in San Felipe!

The hotel is OK, but needs some work & is overpriced. The Fiesta Inn up the road is less expensive & newer & has a nicer beach. The pool was gross after the weekend--it turned green. It is also in serious need of refinishing.

The staff was generally nice & helpful overall--Geovani was very helpful--but the persistent "Mexico time" lateness does get old. I had a massage scheduled at the spa for 930am & no one showed up til 10am & then they actually called & asked where I was.

The food @ the restaurant & bar is just so-so.

The dive operation is OK, but not really as advertised. The flyer they presented to our group was obviously written many years ago, as there were no mantas, no hammerheads & no whale sharks. And, we never did meet our host James Curtis from the Cortez Club, as per the flyer. One would think that James would like to say hello to a group of 30+ divers....They need to upgrade & provide more consistent & organized service--no ladders on boats is just ridiculous. And the boxed lunches are mostly atrocious.

RE TOWN: It's 80 pesos or 8 USD (theoretically, this is equal to 106 pesos) to get to town ONE WAY by taxi (just because the exchange rate is 13+ pesos per USD, does not mean you will get that; most places still seemed stuck on the 10 peso per dollar rate).

You are definitely better off to get pesos @ the ATM to spend instead of dollars!

It's 30 USD for a taxi from the airport. If you're staying for more than 3-4 days, it will probably be cheaper to rent a car to drive to & from town & the airport as you will not want to eat @ the hotel the whole time....check on priceline, hotwire, etc for last minute deals a couple of days before you go but reserve a car first on a standard site. You can cancel the reservation if you find a better last-minute deal.

Mediocre accommodations, no air conditioning except in room and dining area, and the dive operation falsified what we could expect---which is why we went---and they charged for things they DO NOT SUPPLY or deliver. They sent out boats with divers and snorklers without ANY ladders to get back in after being in the water, and the ladders that they do have are inadequate, and unsafe. Also, the boats are in terrible condition, with cracks and torn cushions, and the management routinely adds extra people to full charters without permission of the charterees, and sells spaces TWICE.
Meals in the hotel have absolutely NO VARIATION, no clocks in many rooms, and my shower had moldy tiles in the ceiling of the shower, and the toilet was very tempermental. However, the rooms were clean and the hotel staff was very pleasant, and wake-up calls were on time (after they got my phone working). I never got a washcloth in the 8 days there, and had to ask several times to receive more than one towel, or a bathmat.

My wife and I stayed with another couple celebrating his 40th Birthday by fishing the Sea of Cortez. I booked the trip through Tailhunter as part of a fishing/scuba package so I'm not sure exactly how much I spent on the room itself.

The hotel is well situated on the beach with our room (and it looked like most) facing the ocean and perfect sunsets. The July weather was of course hot and humid, but the A/C worked just fine. The room was small with a king bed and mediocre bathroom. The accomodations suited us as we were there for fishing and diving and did not spend much time in the room except to sleep.

We ate at the retaurant at the hotel for breakfast and spent about $9 USD for the buffet. The food was good with fresh fruit and juices. We spent plenty of time at the pool/bar/beach and received incredible service. The bar staff hustled and we rarely had to flag someone down.

The beach was not terribly crowded although it looks like the 4-5 palapas are first-come first-serve as I saw people staking out the shade as early as 8:00 AM. The bar staff will traverse the sand to bring you buckets of icy cold refreshments! We brought a sample of our catch (dorado) to the bar who turned into fresh sashimi accompanied by a few slices of chile.

The pool water is warm and the pool is kept clean except one day when it appeared the filter/pump was broken and the pool was green, by 9:00 AM the staff had it cleaned up and ready to use.

We usually went to town for dinner which at the time is a 100 peso taxi ride each way. Ask the locals where to eat, we were never steered wrong. It was best to use pesos but no one turned away US currency.

We dove with the Cortez Club which is next to the hotel. Their operation was safe, had good loaner equipment and did not overbook their boats.

Our trip to La Paz was fantastic and spoke with people who had stayed at La Concha for over 20 years. We enjoyed it and would book this hotel again.

Hotel is in need of some tender love and care, it has huge potential, good beach location, but away from the town of la paz if you want to sample food outside of the hotel. The 4km walk into town is dangerous since part of the route is along an unsafe highway which then joins up with a promenade, but taxi's are cheap and plentiful.

All the rooms have amazing sunset ocean views and a fairly large and empty beach with chairs and palapas for shade. You could snorkel or wade out into the water to cool down or just walk along looking for cool shells and coral. The pool and restaurant area are very nice and the service is amazing with very friendly staff. We ate at the restaurant 3 or 4 times with good meals - fresh Mexican but with a little flare thrown in for all the American guests! Most meals were in the $6-12 price range for dinner. Drinks were expensive compared to elsewhere, so that was the only downside. My wife and I booked 4 nights here just thinking it would be a nice place to sleep close to both the downtown (but not in it) and the beautiful beaches outside of town. It served well for that purpose but we easily could have spent an entire trip at La Concha if we wanted to just relax. I would recommend this place to everyone wanting a quite beach-side stay and would certainly stay here again.
