“GREAT HOSPITALITY”
Reviewed 4 April 2013

This was our 3rd time staying at Las Gaviotas and at every stay, we've enjoyed the warmth hospitality given by it's property owners and their staff...great for families, suites very spacious and colorful, great views of the bay and the Malecon no matter what floor your in. Well located, close to downtown and some local beaches. Can't wait for a return trip. We had a really good time.

Arrived on a Sunday afternoon and checked in to room 4D. We were two couples traveling together for the 1st time and found the 2 bedroom 2 bath unit perfect. I think it was Janet who greeted us by name and provided our keys. We flipped for the room choice and my wife and I won so we chose the ocean front room. Ideal location just off the Malecon by a half block. I think the hotel is 10 rooms and all very roomy and large balconies overlooking the bay and Malecon. Awesome breakfast included, nice heated pool and a warm ownership will bring us back again. Your host will help with any arrangements happily.

We stayed one night and were pleasantly surprised with the unit and Gail, the owner, was so friendly and helpful. We were staying in San Jose Del Cabo and drove up to la Paz to see the beaches. Unfortunately, it was so windy, we could hardly get out of the car. When I opened my door, the sand blew inside of the car and got all over it. The next morning Gail makes breakfast for everyone at no extra charge. What a great breakfast we had. Fruit, juice, coffee eggs the way you want them, fried potatoes, and the best was her homemade sourdough bread. While we were eating we could watch the hummingbirds at the 2 feeders she had hung in a tree. It was a fun experience.

La Paz is perfect for travellers seeking a more authentic taste of Baja California, and Las Gaviotas is the closest thing to feeling right at home in a hotel. Their units are perfectly priced - $140 -$160/night - for couples traveling together or families (read further for a description of the "rooms").

Location: The hotel is one street up from the Malecon, a little further north from the main hub of activity on "the strip". Turn right when you see Los Laureles seafood restaurant (keep your eye out if you're driving as street signs are few and far between). You are at most a 10 or 15 min walk from most of what you'll need (including groceries, liquor, gas, bike rentals, day tours and tons of restaurants and bars).

Size & amenities: It's a four storey building with four units on each floor. The owners, Gail and Chalo are very welcoming, though you might not meet them unless you're there on a Monday or Tuesday. There is a small restaurant downstairs, underground parking (free) and a pool in the yard out back. Breakfast is included and consists of coffee (not bad!), juice, Gail's homemade bread and eggs or an omelette of your choice. Simple stuff that does the trick.
The "rooms" are actually full on apartments with kitchen (fully equipped), dining room, living room and huge terraces overlooking the Sea of Cortez. Every morning you wake up with a sprawling view of the sea! For an extra $9 (over the course of a 4 night stay) we were able to secure a room on the 4th floor, the top floor. Ours had two bedrooms (queen beds), two full bathrooms and 15 foot ceilings! Corner units have plenty of windows and thus lots of bright light.
Gail and Chalo have also assembled the most helpful hotel binder I've ever seen - detailed information on what to do, where to eat, how to make a phone call, the safety of the water, and even how to deal with police who unjustly pull over tourists hoping for a pay off.
The small restaurant, Passione, is great for a midday snack or easy dinner if you don't have other plans, but they don't have a liquor license, it's BYOB. Passione is closed on Mondays, as are many restaurants in La Paz, so make sure you do your homework and make plans accordingly. Find a place that's open or cook "at home".

Overall a wonderful experience as long as you're not expecting marble finishings everywhere and chocolates on your pillow. We will return!

Room Tip: Pay the nominal fee and reserve a room on the 3rd or 4th floor.

We stayed here for 2 nights and had a wonderful time !! The owners and staff were so friendly and helpful. We arrived and checked in within a few minutes and were pleasently suprised with the accommodations. The 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment was huge. Each room has a lovely balcony overlooking the bay which is gorgeous. There is also a full kitchen and a couple markets that are a quick walk away so you can stock the fridge and make your own meals. One of our favorite parts was the sunsets. Absolutely amazing every night ! The Malecon is a block away and has tons of restaurants and shops. We decided to take the recommendation of the owners to go to Balandra Beach one day. We walked to the bus station and for 40 pesos each took a 35 min. bus ride north and were blown away by the beauty of this wonderful place! The water was very shallow and the sand was soft and white. It was a warm sheltered bay that had several different coves you could walk between. A great place to go with a family. We also loved the breakfast each morning by the pool. They had homemade bread and jam, fresh fruit, eggs and potaoes each day. There are a couple hummingbird feeders that are fun to watch too. We had a wondrful time and felt we got a great deal considering the price, space and hospitality of everyone who worked there!! When we go back to La Paz, we will stay there again in a heart beat. I highly reccommend this hotel to families, what a deal!! And with only 16 units, it feels like you are staying at a friends home.

Just off the Malecón, we spent 2 nights here after an unforgettable adventure to see the grey whales on the west coast. The 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom units had a great view of Malecón and bay. We watched a Mardi Gras parade for children-El Carnevalcito- from our balcony. Everything was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was served by the owners who were also very helpful with a plane reservation problem.
We easily walked to restaurants in the city.
We would definitely stay here again.

We showed up at Las Gaviotas late one evening with no reservations...Chalo was wonderfully
kind and welcoming. We ended up staying 3 nights over the Christmas holidays 2012. What a great way to spend Christmas morning poolside enjoying a delicious breakfast complete with homemade bread and served by the lovely family while being entertained by the many humming birds!!! Chalo even offered us a room in their B &B which was not open at that time to accommodate us when the hotel filled up Christmas eve by guests that had reservations. Rooms are spacious, clean, comfortable and safe. We also appreciated all of there recommendations and directions, we truly felt as though we were visiting friends!
