Our kids own a timeshare that includes a place in Loreto, so when they offered to gift us their week, we gratefully accepted, not knowing anything about the area. This is in spite of the fact that as residents of southern California, Loreto is only about a 2 hour flight.

The resort offered an affordable Zodiak boat half-day excursion to the Marine Park, which included some snorkeling time, so we went.

Well the excursion company and the captain of our little boat was fabulous, but you want to know about the Marine Park ... so ...

... OMG! I don't use this term lightly. After all, I'm a 70 year old grandmother and we don't generally start our sentences with OMG! But honestly, this really is an OMG type of experience.

You like birds? You'll see birds. You like fishies? You'll see fishies. You like dolphins? They'll literally be dancing at your feet! You like sea lions? We found quite a few sunning themselves on rocks at the edge of one of the islands and they were unfazed when we all grabbed our cameras and phones to take their photos. You like stunning scenery? NO PROBLEMA!!

I understand that this jewel of a place is second only to The Great Barrier Reef in size and scope. It's protected by the Mexican government and is a UNESCO World Heritage Center. I'm very grateful ... and I think you will be too.

Although you can find excursions that include longer time snorkeling, we were content with our 1/2 hour or so. Our goal was primarily to become acquainted with as large an area of the park as possible and we did.

But there's more to be explored. Our captain told us that at the beginning of the year the migrating whales are present in abundant numbers and that's worth a visit. There are also sea turtles to see and lots of other amazing life.

My husband and I plan to be VERY NICE to our son and daughter in law. Yeah, yeah they're great and deserve to be treated well by their parents ...

... but we want them to send us down to Loreto again!

Next time, we think we'll take a snorkeling adventure excursion!!

We took an boat tour of the area and visited the national park. It was beautiful, with something to see everywhere you looked (fish, birds, and rock formations). I would highly recommend a visit.
