On our most recent visit to Rancho Leonero, we were treated once again to virtually the same experience we fondly remembered from our first visit over twenty years ago. Owner John Ireland has operated this resort for over 25 years, and his steadfast devotion toward preserving old style Mexican fishing, combined with maintaining the low key ambiance afforded by the rancho's tranquil location, no doubt explains why there is such a high percentage of happy repeat guests. By resisting the notion of expanding the rancho much beyond it original size, and by not being tempted into making the resort become something it is not, Ireland has effectively preserved a lifestyle and type of Mexican fishing which has already disappeared from Cabo San Lucas and is also rapidly disappearing along the East Cape. Gary, the on-site manager of this charming 28 room rancho, has also been here for over 15 years, echoing the stability and direction being taken to assure prospective guests of a wonderful sojourn at an authentic, unadulterated small Mexican fishing village. Add in the all-inclusive meals which are always very delicious, plus the availability of superior boat captains for fishing and the beautiful oceanfront house reef for snorkeling, and you have everything right here to provide you with a very relaxing, varied and enjoyable visit.

Room Tip: For a little bit extra cost, choose from the oceanfront rooms

We returned last night from our most recent stay at the Ranch, the first spring visit however. As usual, the accommodations were great, meals delicious, and the captains and crews better than any others on the East Cape. We brought another couple who had never been there (or anywhere else in Mexico) although they have traveled extensively...They were simply astounded, even though we had told them for years just how special this place is. You are welcomed (or welcomed back) by the entire staff, your drivers, your captains and crew, housekeeping, restaurant and bar, management and owners. Fishing was very good, the snorkeling on the reef in front of the resort was great as well. Planning on being back in October...

After many years of staying at Rancho Leonero I felt the need to compliment the staff & management. The service has always been above and beyond. The fishing good And the cost of the boats are priced at 4 levels according to size.the fish cleaning service is free (tips only)The ladies in the kitchen always prepare our fresh fish any way wish at no charge.
The rooms are clean & well appointed, meals are very good.I have brought many friends & family.
We all have had an enjoyable stay. This has been for at least the last 15 years.
We all recommend this resort very highly!

We ( 7 of us ) just returned from " the ranch) and loved every minute of it. This is an unspoiled spot with all the comforts one needs. The rooms were spacious ,clean and comfortable .Every room has a beautiful view of the water and the miles of white pristine beach and your fishing boats. The weather was divine with no humidity and warm afternoons and cool evenings. I looked at some of the reviews and we did NOT pay to have our fish cleaned and prepared in 3 different ways each evening along with delicious ceviche. The manager Gerry paid attention to every guest to make sure everything was perfect for them .There were a few days that were windy so we rented atv's ( hotel arranged) and rode along the beach - a blast .The meals were very good and the setting out on the patio was beautiful .If you love to fish and love a quiet spot -just go. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: rooms near the bar have less wind -if it is windy

We spent a week at Rancho Leonero in early March - the first week after the windy season which they close for 3 months. The cost is average and the beach was great - lots of walking opportunities. The cost to fish (boats were expensive and nothing was biting from shore), add the cost of cleaning the fish and cooking the fish and it made it an expensive past time. However, there was literally nothing else to do - bungalows were quaint and the decks nice. Ours however came with a number of mice which we couldn't get rid of. Our friends in the next two bungalows had large geckos. An added bonus was the wake up call each morning as the old Caterpillar they used to push the boats out to the water at 6:30 a.m. started up right next to our bungalows. On a positive note the bar prices were reasonable. The staff were attentive, but management were not especially helpful.

My first trip was with my wife and we enjoyed food, casita, super-friendly staff. Next two years on my own, just for the fishing. Either way, Rancho Leonero is a special hideaway in remote Baja. We relied on staff for airport transportation and a trip into town for delicious lunch and fun shopping.
