We flew into Puerto Vallarta, rented a car from Gecko car rental and drove to El Careyes. This was a 2 1/2 hour drive. A bit on the crazy side, but very scenic and enjoyable. You can stop on the side of the road and enjoy and ice cold beer. Do not recommend doing this drive at night though. We arrived at El Careyes and greeted by a man serving us mint ice tea and cold towels. Our stay at this resort was just perfect. We wanted to be away from all tourist, and we were. It was so beautiful and quiet. We rented kayakes every day, and kayaked around shores and coves. We brought home some absolutley beautiful seashells. Our price included a free "american" breakfast each morning. This consisted of a huge plate of fresh fruit, kiwi, mango, pinapple, yummy! Along with eagss and cheese. We also went horseback riding and the guide pulled over and got a coconut in which he opened with his knife and told me to bring it to the bar and put some tequila and lime in it. The bartender at El Careyes was more than happy to do this. It was just a fun, relaxing, exciting, perfect 10th anniversary trip . If you do not like big cities and tourist this is a great place.

Tucked away in Costa Alegre area between Puerto Vallarta & Manzanillo.
Easier to get to the resort from ZLO. We fly direct 3 hr from LAX.

An older but very colorful complex with attentive staff. Has its own beautiful little beach or walk over or kayak to Playa Rosa to the north or Careyitos beach to the south. Pool area spreads out in one of those circular/geometric designs w/ palms & landscaping around. Sunset dining is superb, and as an alternative Playa Rosa nearby has another very romantic restaurant.

This place is not for night party animals, PV or Cabo is the place for that, but if you are looking for a quiet relaxing, romantic getaway, this is the place!! Yet for active daytime activities, there are plenty! You can hike, bike, kayak, fish, etc using their on-site activities center. On this trip we tried their on site stables for a quick & fun horseback jaunt over to Careyitos beach and some pretty lagoons w/ caymans!

There is no high speed internet but they have a computer room w/ 2 computers.
In adddition there is a game room w/ pool table, air hockey & soccer table, as well a movie room (besides picking up DVD's for free to watch in your room), a good spa & spacious fitness area, and a small store as well as a sundries store w/ some basic medications. So the place can make the claim of a resort, as they got just about everything covered even though they are in the middle of nowhere:)

This time around we had a one bedroom suite with a huge living area & an outdoor covered patio w/ spa (great for watching sunsets if not by the restaurant area). If there was a complaint it would be lack of any drawer space and a very small closet space (about 3 feet). Unfortunately in this room they stuck the safe (which is appreciated) in the middle of the closet area so you don't have any room to hang clothes for 2 people, especially w/ the lack of drawer space. So pack light!

On a final note, a good touch, the resort provides Raid for those pesky ants as well as bug spray for mosquitoes! Some reviewers usually complain about it, but keep in mind you are surrounded by jungle and are in a tropical clime.

1. Getting there: the drive takes 3 hours from the airport at Puerto Vallarta. The three legs of the jouney are: a). Drving through PV. b). Mountain jungle driving, and c). Open country 2 lane country road. We stayed for 3 nights, and wish we one more night. Flying in from Manzanillo would have been easier, but flights are infrequent or there are long connections. When we go back, we will plan on a week, and explore more of the area.

The drive is beautiful, but take your time and as you will have to drive through small towns (equipped with speed bumps) and you will encounter the life of rural mexico; horses/cattle on the road, slow driving trucks, and as we found... a 300 car political rally on the way home, with the occasional car breakdown.

2. Being there. we were one of 3 couples the first couple of days... and we had the resort to ourselves. the entire community of beautiful villas is beautiful, quite, and private. if you take a fishing trip or boat trip, the entire coast line is undevoloped and pristine for miles. On a two hour fishing excursion just offshore from the hotel we saw hundreds of jumping dolphin, schools of bait fish, mahi mahi, and turtles.

3. Pro's... excellent first class service. If you like fishing, it is easy trip to the fishing grounds close to shore and the hotel. the restraunt will prepare great ceveche and cook your fish to order. The room islarge and spacious, and the master bed has AC. We both had the best hot rock massages, and there is a nice gym to help work off the tequila! We liked how the kitchen shared some of the fish caught by guests and they had staff members search the waters for live ocotopus to add to the dinner menu. The beds/pillows are comfortable as well.

4. Con's: our only complaint is the dinner menu is a bit heavy on continental and we wish we had more little local influence and sea food. They will however work with you on the menu and the ceveche is great! Casita las Flores (the condo's above the hotel) has an awesome beach front restaurant next door.

5. we will be back.

Our daughter found this resort searching for the perfect place for her wedding. 80 of us gathered for a week and it was really extraordinary. The one downside of the travel form Puerto Vallarta is quickly forgotten when you are greeted with a fresh cloth and refreshing drink at the car. The rooms are spectacular, ours had a pool on the balcony and several of our group had units facing the ocean, all of the many units I saw were very nice, spacious and comfortable. The restuarant on property is very good, and there is another restaurant just a beautiful five minute walk away for variety. The service was simply superb, on the day of the wedding, wonderful staff served our breakfast and were still doing everything to make the reception perfect 15 hours later with exceptionally good spirits. My daughter was able to rent the home next to the hotel that overlooks it, this was a fabulous venue, with a 270 degree view, I would recommend looking into that if planning a wedding. Other points, it was great for kids, the 10-12 in our group loved the pool, as did we all, and the beach - where the protection of the cove provided calm waters fun to be in. Kids were able to be safely independent here, nice for parents. Rentals of kayaks were great adventures. Neighboring golf on #2 course in Mexico was a huge hit for many. Couldn't have been happier!

Our visit to El Careyes last year was a wonderful one- The resort was a gem! The only part that I might have changed about the trip however would be the airport to choose as there is a huge difference in the driving distance. I would insist on flying to the Manzillo international airport rather Puerto Vallarta. The driving time from Manzillo is about 45 minutes rather the 3-4 hours it took to drive from PV. Some may contest and say the drive is quite scenic- however its only scenic for the first hour or so (and a few parts in between)- the other 2+ is nothing more than a trecherous drive through barron roads and towns. Moreover if you are arriving on a night flight it can be down right dangerous. If you are adventerous then driving may prove to be fun though. When finally arriving at El Careyes we were greeted with a security gate that confirmed our arrival before letting us in. Just the drive into the property was a good few minutes in- and watching the transformation from remote dirt roads into lush green grass and palm trees was awesome. When we arrived - we were greeted with much needed cocktails and cold towels. We were escorted to our room by the receptionist who gave us a brief tour and description about the surrounding area. The room I booked was an ocean front room with a private pluge pool. The view directly out of the patio was breathtaking. Admittingly I would prefer a beach where the sands are white and water of a blue sapphire- yet I found the beaches here to feel more exotic. The resort must have been nearly empty because throughout our entire stay we saw just a few couples here and there- for the most part it felt like the resort was exclusively ours. The staff was super attentive and always ready to please. Whether it was room service, pool, bar, restaurant, spa- we were greeted with a big smile. The food was very fresh and tasty - however after a couple of days- the selection felt a bit limited. Guacamole and ceviches were always super though. When we were tired of the cuisine offered at EC we ventured for a quick 10 minute hike to a secluded fishermans beach where they offered fresh grilled fish and other local foods- this was great and at a much cheaper price offered at the resort (dollar Carona's!). You would need to walk towards the security guard and he will instruct you where to go- You can also ride a bike there. Another option is La loma's which is located to the right of EC- a short walk through the side property of EC and out into another very private exotic beach. One of the nights we booked a "Ocean Front" romantic dinner package- which proved to be a great experience and very romantic indeed. They set up a table just prior to sunset directly in front of the beach and have laterns and candles surrounding the area - food was pretty good too but mainly its about the view. The rooms at EC were very clean and comfortable- the bed and linens were plush and soft. Robes, slippers and even bug spray were availible to us. EC is not a lively destination as entertainment was not offered here- the theme is absolute romance and seclusion from the world. The pool was very large and clean.. had an interesting shape as well. The swim up bar was not open but butlers were stationed around the pool in case you needed anything. We had a couples massage- which was nice but I'm not much for them so I cannot critique this much (I fell asleep though). I would say that the most beautiful thing to experience at El Careyes would be the Sunset- it really is jaw dropping. The whole resort becomes amber and golden specs of sunlight reflect off the waters that shimmer off the walls. According to one of the waiters, during certain times in the season (i forgot which).. the moon would also be humongous at night- " Very very biig!". I was very surprised with EC- as it has exceeded my expectations by many fold. Thanks El Careyes~

Note* Bring a good amount of peso's as there is not a bank for miles - the hotel does take credit cards but you will need peso's to tip/ venture out etc. EC does offer currency exchange at an OK rate but Bank ATM's are best. Moreover the Gas stations on the way back do not accept credit cards. So be prepared- especially if you have the 3 hour drive on the way back. Happy traveling~!
