“Good Place for Teetotalers ;-)”
Reviewed 10 July 2012

We visited Secrets Huatulco in Feb 2012 for 10 days. There are some very nice things about the resort; however, we experienced a lot of negatives too and by the end of our stay I was definitely underwhelmed despite Secrets receiving rave reviews from others.

First, the pluses:

-- a beautiful resort with a great view. (Note, however, that despite being on the Pacific, there is no sunset to speak of as the resort actually faces south).

-- the Huatulco area is lovely. We visited the local town (Crucecita) and loved it (if we went back, we'd probably stay at a resort closer to this town). The town is very quaint with good restaurants and friendly people (locals and visitors).

-- For the most part, we liked the food. The Market is kind of *pedestrian*, but the service was good and we only ate breakfast and lunch there, so we weren't looking for a *dining experience*. We really liked the Seaside Grill -- good food but kind of a limited menu; good service and probably the best views.

-- With a caveat (see below), staff was very good. Everyone we dealt with went out of their way to be helpful and accommodating.

The Negatives:

-- As others have mentioned, this is a beach resort in name only. The drop-off is precipitous and the wave action / rip tide is lethal. Although I have a few more pounds and mileage on me since high school, I was on the swim team and still consider myself a pretty strong swimmer. It took about 10 seconds to realize it would be near-suicidal to try and swim in that surf.

-- ¿No habla ingles!? Wow. For a resort that caters to North Americans, I was really surprised by how few of the staff could speak *any* English, and, for those who could, how poor their command of English was. Whenever you asked a staff member something, you could be sure of an eager smile and a "It's a pleasure" response. However, I quickly realized that they had no idea what I was saying and the eagerness and friendliness wears thin when you can't find anyone to actually help you get something.

-- Probably the biggest disappointment were the drinks. I'm not a big drinker, but like to have the occasional cocktail. I learned not to bother asking for anything at Secrets except beer or wine; otherwise, it was a pretty good bet that what I received was either not what I received or was so watered down that it was undrinkable.

Case in point: I love margaritas and figured they would be delicious at a resort that advertised "unlimited luxury" and "top-shelf spirits". Even though I enjoy margaritas, I don't have much tolerance for alcohol: one is my usual limit, two will pretty much finish me for the evening. At Secrets, I couldn't even detect that the margaritas included tequila. In fact, one night, as a little experiment, I decided to see how many margaritas I could drink before feeling the effects of the alcohol. I gave up after SEVEN margaritas and not feeling the slightest effect at all.

On the whole, it was a beautiful place with very nice (but non-English speaking) staff. However, the negatives outweighed the pluses and I would not return to this resort. Moreover, despite registering my disappointment on the Secrets survey form at check out, and sending a lengthy e-mail to Secrets HQ when we returned, I got no response to either and so have serious doubts whether I'd visit any other Secrets resorts.

Just returned from a week at the new Secrets Huatulco Resort. First i will cover the good things. This place just opened in December, so everything is fairly new. The rooms and furnishings are beautiful. I really appreciate the double sinks, the roomy closet, the in-room safe and the comfy bed! We opted for the preferred club for two reasons. The first was that a balcony with a jacuzzi tub really intrigued me and the other was all of the hype about Preferred Club status. I'm not sure it was worth the extra money. The way this resort is set up, there are preferred rooms in all six of the buildings. Yep that's right. I was expecting there to be a preferred club building with it's own separate P.C. lounge and concierge. Well, that isn't what i found when i checked in. The preferred club lounge and concierge are located in the main building of the hotel, just off the lobby. If you go to this hotel, you will see just how inconvenient this is. We happened to be in Building 4. In order to get to the preferred club, we had to walk down the hall (exterior) to the elevators (only one was working at any given time during our stay) and then up to the top floor where we proceeded through the Sky Bar (this is beautiful with amazing views) and then to another set of stairs (or elevator if you had all day) to get to the preferred club lounge. The "lounge" turned out to be a single room with a few tables and a couple of computer terminals and a concierge who was usually there. The offerings here consisted of continental breakfast with juice and coffee in the morning from 7 am on. We never went here for our breakfast because we had to walk past the Market Cafe which was already opened and where we could have anything we wanted for breakfast (including made to order eggs). They also opened at 7 am. The only advantage we saw from being "preferred club" was that we had free wi-fi, but it seemed to only be available in our room. We were hoping to be able to sit by the pool and connect to the internet to check mail etc. The jacuzzi tub on the balcony was barely big enough for one person to stretch out in, and was cramped for two adults. So, I would say, save your money and do not opt for the preferred club. It is cheaper to pay for internet when you want it. I think that all of the rooms are beautiful and have the same amenities and they certainly all look out at the ocean with an absolutely gorgeous view. They have 8 restaurants at this resort, but the week we were there (4th of July) they were not all open due to "low occupancy". The nice thing about that low occupancy is that there is never waiting for a table in the restaurant that is open and rarely a wait at the bar for a drink. However, it was maddening to have spent a considerable sum of money and expecting all restaurants to be open, only to have a choice of just 2 (sometimes 3) each night. Lunch was just as annoying. We ate a fantastic lunch on our first day at Castaways, which is set up high on the hill near the spa and gym and therefore has amazing views as well as very tasty a la carte food. When we tryed to go back the next day for lunch, it was not open. I think we managed to eat there twice more during our stay after complaining about it being closed. (we ate there every day they opened it.) The gym is wonderful although small, but all of the equipment is new so it is nice and it also has the awesome view, making working out so much more pleasant. The staff is quite nice there, always very pleasant and with a smile and greeting and they usual Mexican response "it is a pleasure" when serving you. For those who complained about the beach, well no, it is not sugary white sand. But it was very walkable for us and there is a "secret pathway" to the other side of the bay where there is an equally stunning view out on to the ocean. The red flag was waving the entire time we were there as well, but people were in the water anyway. The red flag indicates a strong undertow, which there definitely was, but there is a life guard on duty from very early in the morning until ??? All in all, i would say that our trip was very enjoyable, but if i return, i will come back when there are more people there so that one could experience the full scope of services that this hotel has to offer.

We stayed at Secrets Resort in Huatulco and had a wonderful experience. The resort is set in a beautiful bay looking over the ocean. If you are looking for unspoiled beauty, easy to get to, quality cuisine, and a romantic atmosphere then Secrets Hualtulco is the place to go. My husband and I enjoyed the jet ski tour and the spa as well. We were in a preferred swim up room which was kept very clean and so were the pools. We enjoyed trying a new restaurant every evening. It was the best food we have had at an all inclusive.

Huatulco is a destination on the far south Pacific coast of Mexico many travelers will not be familiar with, I expect, because it is difficult to get to. From our city, there is new non-stop charter service so we decided to give it a try as we frequently visit the Riviera Maya. The Secrets resort has only be open less than a year but the staff is doing their best to work out the kinks. The airport facilities and the subsequent road to and from are not quite ready for prime time so pack your patience. I will say everyone we met was very friendly and helpful but your high school Spanish will come in handy here.

The adults only Secrets Resort 's 6 buildings are terraced down over a steep hillside so there are good views from virtually every room. We were in Building 1 at the top which we liked because it was quiet, close to the restaurants and was the only building (we heard) that got good wi fi. The rooms are comfortable with good AC but on the smallish side as compared to resorts we have been to. Also, the decor is starkly modern which is not my taste but to each their own. A disappointment was there was no air conditioned bar we could gather before dinner. The Sky Bridge bar was fun but very hot and humid and after dressing for a nice meal, it would have been nice to have had a cool place for pre-dinner cocktail. All the main restaurants all were air conditioned although still got steamy at times.

Other reviewers have covered the service and meals pretty well already, so suffice it to say, we were mostly happy, especially with the evening meals. The breakfast buffet was hit and miss and after a week, got old. There was no restaurant serving an ala carte breakfast although we were told there is one open during high season. I have found the food in general is better on the Pacific side as we love the spicier salsas and like our Mexican dishes, muy picante. Sadly no lobster served here except for one night where there was an event with an upcharge. Also shrimp dishes were not quite as plentiful as they are in the Cancun area all-inclusives.

Our chief complaint is the beach, although scenic is not usable. One morning we were just barely walking in the surf and the lifeguard came rushing over to tell us not to even get our feet in the water as the undertow was too strong. The sand is very coarse and gets very hot so beach shoes are a must. Red flags were out everyday so we were not able to get in the ocean at all. A repeat guest said this is always the case no matter what the time of the year. I have trouble believing Secrets would build a resort on such a rough beach so who knows. We went in June which is the start of rainy season but we only had one morning of rain which was welcome due to the high heat and humidity. The pools are large and nice and the bar service was great so no problems there.

I would say this is a nice destination for travelers wanting to try something different and who are primarily pool people but enjoy looking at the ocean.

Senor Everett Medina
Chief Concierge
Secrets Resort and Spa
Huatulco, MX

Everett - I just wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for all of your efforts and let you know how much my entire family enjoyed our stay at your resort. It was a phenomenal destination that we will long remember. We could not have asked for a nicer, better maintained facility. The grounds, common areas, restaurants and pool areas were all immaculate. The Housekeeping Staff did miracles with our rooms. The Bell Staff, Wait Staff, Concierge Desk, and the Spa staff (to name only a few) were equally fantastic. The food in every one of the restaurants was delicious. We especially enjoyed Cin Cin (Italian cuisine) and the Market Cafe. However, I would be remiss if I did not emphasize that our best memories of the trip will include the friendliness and professionalism of your entire staff. When I use the word "entire", I truly mean it. We were absolutely delighted by every single member of your staff with whom we came into contact.

My personal favorite was the middle age gentleman on the Bell Staff that had recently injured both arms in what I believe was a motorcycle accident. I have never met a friendlier or more personable individual. He always greeted me with an "Hola Senor", a firm handshake, a smile on his face and a "How is your day?".

My wife would not let me send this without her complimenting the entire Hostess staff at the Market Cafe and tell them thanks for how much fun their daily Spanish lessons were.

We have never felt so pampered in our lives.

As for Huatulco itself, it was an absolutely delightful destination. I marvel at how it could be etched out of the mountains and provide such a delightful view of the Pacific Ocean. Visiting your resort in the "rainy season" was somewhat concerning to us before our arrival. However, the grounds were so lush and the fact that we were treated as the "only guests" was totally unbelievable.

My one regret was that (with your very busy schedule) I was unable to track you down during our stay so I could share my appreciation with you directly.

Secrets - Huatulco will definitely be on our "Definitely Return List".

Very Appreciatively,

Jerry XXXXX and Family

We had a problem with the reservation, they need to coordinate with the reservation center,if you want to make a reservation call directly to the Secrets Huatulco by phone.

Room Tip: saty away from the first floor, because of the insects!! spiders. is better and shipper ocean view...

We stayed at this Secrets Resort for a week at the end of June and the resort and the views are unbelievably beautiful. I don't think I've ever been or seen another resort that looked so amazing. Looking out from some of the restaurants and bars....SO gorgeous and romantic.

With this being a brand new resort, yes, it's going to need to iron out it's hiccups and to be completely honest...we would not return for another visit. We definitely had some things that we weren't pleased with or were frustrating.

When we arrived and got to our room, we grabbed a couple of Coronas in the fridge that is always to be stocked, and were sitting out on our deck staring at the view. When the gentlemen came to deliver our bags, he asked if we would like some more Coronas and we said, "Sure, would love it!" He giggled and said, "no problem." Well, the beers never came. The following morning, I noticed that our all white bedding had a dark stain at the end of it. I turned on the light and there was a quarter-size drop of blood on the end....I definitely freaked out and called room service to come change immediately. In my opinion, cleaned or not cleaned...a good resort does not use bedding/towels/etc if it's stained. PERIOD. I also woke up that morning hungover and we did not have any more bottle water in the fridge so my husband called down and requested a couple bottles to be brought up. They responded, "on the way." The water never showed....

That evening while we were getting ready for dinner, I was in a towel and my husband was in boxers when they came to the room to decorate for our honeymoon with rose petals, champagne, and a banner over the door. It was extremely akward timing. The door was open while we are standing there, and they are decorating with guests walking by looking in.

I am absolutely terrified of bugs and if you feel the same way, just be warned. There are bugs EVERYWHERE. And they did a good job, cause you always saw them out there spraying and trying to keep them out but it was gross. There were dead june bugs ALL OVER THE PLACE, the largest moths ever, giant locusts and one night there was this thing in the hallway that was a mix between one of those giant Madagascar cockroaches and a centipede. It was freaky looking! And there's little you can do about the bugs all over, but I don't think its out of line to be cleaning up all the dead ones, smeared ones and stepped on ones. And we didn't have any problems in our room, but some other guests that we befriended said they had TERRIBLE problems with large spiders there in their room. A friend of ours (on 5th floor) woke up to one crawling on her forehead and another couple who were friends of ours (first floor) were up all night cause they had about 6 surrounding their bed. All these people were shoving towels under their doors to try and keep them from getting in.

Not really a complaint, but it was funny and something I've never really seen at a resort before, but you would see little crabs around as well. We found a red one on the rocks at the Sky Bar one night, I was in the restroom on lobby floor, and when I went in the stall, there was a crab staring at me from under the sink, and a friend found one inside in trashcan in their room!

One thing for me is that I'm a beach snob. And this is nothing against the resort at all, more against the travel agent but I was firm in stating that I just need white powder sand - that's it. I wasn't picky on anything else except the sand and I was reassured this is powder sand just not white, the tan color. That could not have been further from the truth. Just know, if you are looking for that white powder beach sand...THIS DOES NOT HAVE IT. This wasn't even like your typical Flordia sand....this was coarse and more gravel like. We were so disappointed that we pretty much avoided the beach the entire trip except for the very last day we were there.

When you go to the beach though, they have these swinging beds that are the most unbelievably amazing lounges EVER! They only have about 6-7 or so, and they get taken up fast cause people will go put bags on them super early and leave, which is incredibly rude. But those are a MUST! So comfortable with the breeze and the crashing waves...it will put you in a trance!

One thing that was very disappointing for us was the night life. THERE WAS NONE. NOTHING. And it got very irritating for many who were staying there. They sent out those sheets in the morning of what restaurants were open, bars that were open, drink of the day, etc...well we tried numerous times to go to Desires, which is like their "club" if you will. There wasn't a soul inside that place like everytime we tried. One night we went and the Entertainment Team was there trying to hype up the place with like the 4 people in there and nobody was getting going. I applaud them for trying, but because barely anyone was there, they would come grab you and try to get you up and be crazy. We didn't want to be pulled into anything, we wanted some good music, drinks, while being dressed up and then we will see what happens. One of the last nights they had karaoke, and it turned out to be one of the best nights there but it only went until 11:30pm and then they cut it off and when they did, people were not happy at all. People were yelling, "boo-ing" and frustrated cause finally!...here was a night where something fun was happening and they were cutting off. And that day, the itinerary said the karaoke from 10-1130 and Desires from 11-1am. We saw them carrying out the karaoke equipment and people were grabbing their drinks and heading over to Desires and come to find out.......they just decided to not even open it! Customers, including us were mad to say the least. People went to complain to the manager because people were expecting to go to Desires until 11-1am and it's not fair to just NOT open cause whoever doesn't feel like it. We came for a good time, finally are having one, and they just shut everything down. Then we were told that they weren't opening Desires cause nobody would come in. Well possibly not within the first 10 minutes you open but that's not fair to just close it. People might have poured in later. Then, the poor bartender at Sky Bar who was getting ready to close up, was told he had to stay and serve us all since people were so mad. Everyone was trying to tip and give him money cause it wasn't his fault at all, and she should not have had to stay. All I know is that A LOT of people were pissed that night. We just didn't like how they didn't even have options and we were under the impression that the Dreams Resort is right next to us, or possibly walking distance and it's easily a 8-10 min cab ride. We stayed at the Secrets Punta Cana in Dominican and that place was AWESOME! Plus it had the Larimore Now Resort directly next door so if you wanted peace, quiet and romance, you could enjoy at Secrets but if you were in the mood for some dancing...they had a casino, sports bar, lounges and rooftop club! Here there was NOTHING like that.

The Infinity pools are just amazing!! Most unbelievable views and the water is perfect temperatures, just perfect! You never have a hard time getting towels or finding a lounge or umbrella.

THE SPA IS THE MOST GORGEOUS PLACE IN THE WORLD!!! If you go to this resort, the spa is an absolute MUST!!!! We spend 2 days at the spa and they have the inifinity pool, the hydrotherapy, the cold/hot water rock thing you walk through and the treatments there are the best we've ever had. The first day we went to get a Hot Stone Couples Massage. I would fly back just for that massage!! All the employees are the nicest people! They made you feel so comfortable and welcomed. They even brought us mimosas and chocolate covered strawberries in the infiniti pool for our honeymoon. RENE at the spa is wonderful!!!

There are a lot of fun things to do by the pool too. We did archery one day which was awesome! They provided it everyday at 4pm, and they had basketball in and our of the pool, a giant fountain, the swim up bar, rafts...it was so wonderful. Plus the pool(s) are huge, you have a lot of options and you are never fighting for a spot.

Best restaurant?? SPICE!!!! The Hibatchi grill was the best restaurant BY FAR! But make sure to make your reservation to sit up at the grill - ahhhmazing!! What we found a little odd about it though?....we loved it so much we went back, and when you are not sitting at the grill, it's a whole different menu which was more mediocre. But sit up at the grill for sure, it was the best, most tasty food we experience the whole trip and they really fill you up! The spring rolls and mushroom soup are delish! Plus with your fried rice and veggies, you get your choice of 3 meat/fish! I had the filet, chicken and salmon, soooo goood!! (omg, mouth watering....)

We also did an excursion - the 7 Bay Cruise on jet skis that stopped in one of the bays for snorkling which included the giant sea turtles! I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend doing this. It was so gorgeous, i can hardly describe. The rock formations around the bays and it's so peaceful and quiet, there is just nothing out there, but they look straight from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Just unbelievably sight-seeing! And the water is sooooooo turquiose blue out there! They said the water wasn't as blue at our resort cause of the rain but that was the most fun excursion ever! While cruising around on the jet skis, the instruction was blowing his whistle and we all came closer to form a circle and who was playing with us, along side of us?....1 MAMA AND 2 BABY DOLPHINS!!! I've never seen baby dolphins before!! They were soooooooo adorable, everyone was going nuts! It was the neatest thing, and as soon as we started up the engines again to get going, they were playing in the wakes and took a few jumps out of the water to play but couldn't keep up. But that was by far, the coolest thing I've seen!! Plus the instructor was such a sweet, funny, all-around cool guy - everyone had a great time just hanging out with him!

The employees there do work incredibly hard and they are so friendly and they never show aggrivation, frustration or that they are annoyed. They do everything with a smile, are always greeting you and responding with "it's a pleasure." So sweet!
