Loved it here best service I ever had, it was a bit pricey, and the beach wasn't the best but the service was second to none, highly recommend going. The restraunts had gluten free menus. And the staff was willing to go the extra mile dot their guests. After staying here I am spoiled

Room Tip: Loved the ground floor, swim out pool rocked

My wife and I visited this resort in for 2 weeks in early February for the first time and we were not disappointed. We have vacationed on the Mayan Riviera for several years but decided to try HUATULCO for the first time as the prices were low and Secrets had been receiving good reviews by other travellers.

We travelled with Transat and paid a small fee for the upgrade to Option Plus as we needed some extra baggage allowance due to the length of our planned vacation. Upon arrival at the HUX airport we quickly realized we were now in "old Mexico". No huge terminals and very limited shopping but the arrival process was very quick / organized resulting in our departure for the resort in very short order.

Upon arrival at the resort you have a view of the entire bay and a beautiful elevated view of the ocean below. Check in was quick despite approximately 40 other people checking in at the same time. After check in we grabbed a cocktail for the walk to our room (building 6 on the 3rd floor). This room was perfectly placed as it, along with every other room, has a view of the ocean. Building 6 is the closest building to the ocean and has a completely unobstructed view over the pool area onto the Pacific Ocean. I would highly recommend this building.

Given the previous review posted regarding chairs and the reported problem with people reserving the chairs very early we were prepared to get up early the first day to ensure we got a chair. As it turned out there were plenty of chairs available throughout our trip regardless of what time we ventured down to the beach. Additionally there has been alot of talk about a lack of shade at the pools and on the beach. We were fortunate that we had the opportunity to secure chairs with access to shade every day but this could certainly be addressed by the resort providing more umbrellas and possibly constructing additional palapas on the beach.

Despite other reviews claiming they were unhappy with the beach we were very pleased with it. There is a slope to the beach leading to the ocean making it difficult to go for runs on the sand if that is up your alley but otherwise the resort has its own private beach as there are no other resorts in close proximity to the property. The sand on the beach is coarse in comparison to Maroma Beach on the Mayan side or Varadero / Bavaro beaches in Cuba and the Dominican but we found after a day your feet get very used to it and had no problems walking in the sand (which is very deep) in the morning and late in the day. The sand is far to hot to walk on during the heat of the day as the temperature was constantly in excess of 32 degrees every day without any clouds.

As outlined above the weather in Huatulco was unbelievable. Having vacationed on the Mayan side for the past 9 years we have grown accustomed to the afternoon clouds and occasional day of February rain. Over the course of 2 weeks in Huatulco we were shocked to see a cloud let alone have any concern for rain. It is my understanding the weather in Huatulco is very stable and that our experience is the norm rather than an exception.

The resort. This is the first time we have stayed at a Secrets after having the opportunity to stay at numerous five star properties over the years (see other reviews for some examples). We were very happy with the service which was typically as good or better than that we have received at other properties. It should be noted that despite becoming a more popular tourist destination employees of the resort dont speak english as well as those on the Mayan side. I found this to be part of the experience of being in another country and never had a problem getting anything that we had requested.

As stated above, every room has an ocean view. The rooms closest to the ocean are furthest from most of the restaurants. The rooms are adequate and comfortable but certainly not the nicest rooms we have stayed in. Our room was the standard suite that included a rain shower with a sliding wall that could be opened to provide a private view of the ocean while having a shower. Our only complaint about the room would be the use of glass for the bathroom door. I can see this being an uncomfortable set up for some if not most travellers.

Despite being a relatively large resort (399 rooms) the resort is constructed in such a fashion that it is not an enormous property. There are plenty of rest rooms available in close proximity to the public areas and a couple of good pool / ocean bars which feature excellent beach and pool side service. The bars were all stocked with a wide variety of premium liqours and two types of draft (light and dark) along with "Bud and Bud Light" in cans. We feel pretty strongly about tipping while in Mexico as the minimum wage in the country is under a $1.00. We tipped regularly and found we received exceptional service! I noted the vast majority of people did tip regularly so it was nice to see but must say the staff appeared to provide the same level of service regardless of whether they were being tipped or not.

The restaurants, Overall they were good. Each had a different menu and all were al a carte for dinner which we really enjoy. Every night there is a theme dinner which is buffet style. We enjoyed the Buffet one night which provided a wide variety of food but a completely different atmosphere than the restaurants. The service at all of the restaurants was very good and the menus were provided a good selection of different dishes. We really enjoyed the food at the Italian and French restaurants. The atmosphere in the mexican restaurant was probably the nicest as it was a little darker and slower paced in our opinion. When you visit make sure you go to "Cast-aways" for lunch as it provides a great ocean view while you enjoy your meal. Dont forget to enjoy the view as we actually saw whales (breaching) while taking a much needed break from the sun! The food at all of the restaurants was very good. I would not say it is the best that we have experienced when compared to other all inclusive resorts but we couldn't complain about any meal we had!

Fitness area, overall is very well equipped. New equipment and several cardio options. We enjoyed running off the resort to La Bocana which is a short but hilling jog from the hotel.

Huatulco overall was wonderful. You will not find any sign of commercialization in Crucecita or Santa Cruz. We had the opportunity to enjoy both of these towns as we caught a boat at the Santa Cruz Marina and enjoyed a private bay tour during which we were fortunate to see numerous dolphins, sea turtles and of course bays along the coastline. La Crucecita was a great spot to do some shopping and enjoy some time away from the resort. I would call it "old mexico" as the locals dont speak great english but are very approachable and quick to provide any advice that they can.

Overall this is one of the best all inclusive vacations we have experienced. As outlined above the weather in Huatulco is exceptional, the resort was clean with very good service and good food. The rooms were clean with amazing ocean views and bars were very well stocked. The area is low key and has a very friendly feel. We highly recommend the bay tour as you will see the may bays that make up the area. Most of these beaches are unoccupied but very clean! We may have a hard time booking anywhere back on the Mayan side again!

If you go make sure you talk to "Luis" in the Mexican restaurant. He speaks very good english and is quick to offer advice on how to get the most out of your vacation!

NOTE: The resort needs to construct some stairs from the ocean bar down to the beach area. Every day we observed servers navigating the rocky path down the hill while carrying a full tray of drinks! It is not a matter of if but when a guest or employee takes a nasty fall and suffers a serious injury.

Room Tip: Building 6 / 3rd floor. This is closest to the ocean with a clear unobstructed view. Lower rooms wil...

We just returned from Huatulco where we stayed at Secrets. We didn't get the room we had requested and had to wait two days to change rooms so we would have a king bed. The food was mediocre, same thing, no variety. Long waits to attend the restaurant, and long wait to get served. The furniture throughout the resort is overly large, cheap wicker with cushions and definitely not comfortable. This is definitely not a 5 star hotel and I would be stretching to give it a 3 star rating. Pools are in need of a good clean as there is black algae growing in the pools in the grout areas. Also, be aware to put valuables in safe and not on the shelf below the safe as this area is access by staff (or anyone else) from an unlocked cabinet on the outside of your room. The cabinet is large enough for a person to crawl through. And, for those of you who are shy, the bathroom toilet area is clear glass.

Stayed at Secrets for two weeks middle of February with brother and sister-in-law. Beautiful resort, service, food, etc. second to none. We were in building one, top floor and had a great view and good wifi service from our room. I think the top floor of any of the buildings would have the best view, as mentioned in other reviews. We also had to play the towel game, but are early risers anyways. Had to reserve a larger spot on the beach by 6:30 or 7. Loved walking to La Bocana in the morning - around a 15 to 20 minute walk along the highway on a good sidewalk. Beautiful beach, and a few restaurants to have a cervaza, etc. Walked to Dreams Resort one morning, about a 45 minute walk, and were able to go in and look around, and even have breakfast there. The beaches on either side of the Secrets are also beautiful and worth exploring. The food was tremendous, we preferred the a la cartes, over the buffets, although the tropical buffet night set up around the pool was nice. The Mexican restaurant for breakfast was much better than the Market. The Market almost had an institution atmosphere. Service was wonderful. For the Olympic Men's hockey games, the Desires bar was set up with a big screen TV, etc, and for the gold medal game, they even had a breakfast buffet set up and the bar open at 6 in the am! I really liked the turn down service at night, and the sheet with the next day's activities and restaurants that would be open - very handy. Went on a fishing boat with Gilberto - $300 for the day, up to three couples. We all caught fish (mine got away), saw dolphins, a whale, many sea turtles, etc. Stopped at Maguey Beach for lunch at Alfredo's - great coconut shrimp. Toured along the coast coming back; very worthwhile and would recommend Gilberto as very reputable. As others had stated, it is very hot here, we were using 50 SPF and re-applying often and didn't burn, but saw many badly burnt people there. All in all, a very memorable vacation and would definitely like to go back!!

Room Tip: Any top floor of any building; building one, top floor with low numbers had good wifi service from...

We stayed here January 2014 First the good
Nice room although needed work, very dark no lights
Nice beach and pool area
The not so good
This is the cheapest decorated hotel i have stayed in for a five star
example, the chairs in the fancy french restaurant are plastic patio chairs from walmart,
Theres not on plant anywhere just concrete and lousy stools and the theater is rows of cheap chairs all lined in rows no tables no service no view its terrible.
The food
I asked for an egg white omelet and they couldn't make it didn't know what it was.
All of the restaurants are in the middle of the hotel no view lousy seats no air conditioning and the worst food i have had in my fifteen times at all inclusive.
Service, The service is terrible half the time you ask for something and they never come back.
I have stayed at the riu palaces and the barcelo palaces, let me tell you this does not come close to them at all. I just can't figure out why someone would write a good review they must have a timeshare or sit in the pool bar all day and just don't notice the lousy food and serrvice.
Another example of this place is the movies by the stars is a image put on a cement wall and no sound with walmart lawn chairs in a row.
This place is a three star at best because the room is new, and the poor staff are over worked as they don't have enough of them.
Go to any of the other chain as this one is just not worth the money.

Room Tip: Don't get a hot tub room they have the worst view.

This review may seem like a photocopy of others here, so I guess that means most of them are spot on with a few exceptions. So I will keep it short.
First, I want to say I heard lots of negatives on Air Canada Rouge. We booked through ACV to get a better flight than Transat or Sunwing, and were very disappointed to find out we were on Rouge. However, I still think there is more seat room on the Rouge 319 than the other two carriers, and the flight attendants were awesome, and we pushed back at both ends on time, so I have virtually no complaints. I don't expect or pay for white linen and cornish hen on the flight, I just want to get there. One tip, download the Air Canada app before you board the plane if you want to watch inflight movies.
The arrival and transfer were what you expect.
Read any of the other reviews for a detailed rundown of the resort, but I will echo a few points.
I'm not a connoiseur of fine food, nor very adventurous with dining, but I tried EVERYTHING, including things I never thought I would. The food is tremendous at all the a la cartes. The only one we didn't do was CinCIn. I have Crohn's disease, and did Mexican, Japanese, seafood, etc., and never ONCE had a problem. Breakfast at the Market cafe is consistently good, and the coffee tastes like coffee. Room service was second to none.
We are beach people, but due to the slope, and the waves, we were forced to become pool-goers.
Other than goofy little flies that just annoy you, bugs were non existent. My wife has always been a bug buffet and I think some no-see-ums got her, but I never saw any :) I never had one bite.
The negatives to us were
1) Beach (its not their fault, its the Pacific side and is what it is)
2) Towel Game ( when in Rome...we went down at 6am like everyone else. Difference is, we went back at 830 and stayed all day). The resort should definitely enforce the rule. We saw way too many chairs with towels sit unused ALL day. I believe there are enough chairs and umbrellas if ignorant people weren't so selfish.
3) the pool bar, sky bar and several other places seemed understaffed at peak times.
4) We do all inclusives so we do not have to carry money. The bartenders are more eager if you have green in your hand. We tip at the end of the week, not as we go. Seemed to slow us down.
5) Some of the evening entertainment was excellent, but some was, well, marginal.
6) Premium liquor (crown royal, grey goose) rare or non existent. Drinks were sometimes pretty watered down.

This is a couples resort. There was some partying, but it seems to be designed to spend quality peaceful time with your mate. The clientele while we were there was 80 percent Canadian, so we made friends about every other step. Balance seems to be US midwest...Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri. And like most resorts, other guests gave us more accurate information and advice than the resort does.

One warning...its HOT. 38C every day, and the sun is intense. Heed all the warnings on here about the heat and sunblock.

In summary, we had a terrific, relaxing week. No major complaints. If you are planning to go to Secrets, you will not come home feeling you wasted your money. It may or may not be your ideal holiday, but have no fear, either way you will feel good about it and be glad you went.

One cannot overrate the level of service the people who work at this resort provide, the natural beauty of the setting, the incredible vision the architectural firm had as they designed the way the resort would fit into the rugged terrain, or its cleanliness.
