Owner description: An active, snow-capped volcano well-worth a side trip.
Reviewed 11 May 2012

I too visited the Nevado de Colima with Jupiter Rivera of Admire Mexico Tours. I probably could have gone on my own as I was living a couple of hours away at the time but I wasn't that sure that the brakes on my then 15 year-old Jeep Sahara would suffice for the return trip. We spent the night in Comala to get an early start and drove out to the Nevado de Colima National Park early in the morning. Once off of the highway we immediately began to climb and the drive up through the forest of pine and robles was beautiful. Here and there as we climbed the forest opened up to great vistas. Something I found very interesting on the trip up were the different layers of soil visible in the banks along the road. We could actually see by the different colours and textures of the layers how they had been laid, one on top of another, when the mountain was formed.

Arriving at the parking lot at the top of the road that is accessible to the public we noted that it was starting to cloud over. No matter, we were the only people there which was nice and we set off for the observation centre and then the summit of the Nevado on foot. As we walked up the dirt road through the pine forest I could feel the lack of oxygen in my lungs - we were at almost 4000 meters at that point and reached 4000 meters at the observation centre. Jupiter had us all take it easy though and we all made it to the top in good form, no problems with exhaustion or sickness due to the altitude.

Unfortunately when we reached the observation point where the University of Colima have their station to monitor the Volcán de Fuego - the active volcano - the cloud and mist had us completely socked in and we couldn't see much more than about 10 feet in front of us. It was chilly up there, and rather eerie, with a fairly strong breeze blowing the cloud and mist around so things kept appearing and then disappearing. So with no view of the Volcán de Fuego we made our way back down through the swirling mist and cloud to the vehicle in the parking lot. Even though we didn't get to see the Volcán de Fuego the trip was well worth it for me. A great outing in a pristine environment.

We went with the assistance of tour guide Jupiter Rivera of Admire Tours (highly recommended). This is a difficult hike due to it's elevation of 4365 meters (14,320 feet), the trails starts at 3200 meters. Pace yourself and take many breaks.

This used to be an active volcano but now during the months of December it's really cold and it even gets some snow on the mountain it is great place for hicking and watching nature. It is about a four hour drive from Manzanillo.

The snow capped volcano is dormant. It is pretty, but not worth the 2 hour trip from Manzanillo.
