Tesoro Manzanillo
Ranked #6 of 52 Hotels in Manzanillo
Reviewed 6 March 2010

We stayed at the Tesoro in Feb,2010 and were pleasantly surprised.

The facility: The hotel is an older somewhere 1970th, but for it's age, in good shape. Needs some updating though it is not terrible unless you are very picky.

The rooms:

Fine. All of them ( or most at least) with a excellent ocean view. Some rooms have different bed headboard (older and newer). Most have balconies. Depending on the location of the room balcony size may vary.

The room with romm number of xx50 an up overlook over big white roof of hotels facilites and the buffet. If you saty on 15 + floor it ight not be an issue, but for lower floors the few from your balcony may be that pretty.

Best room numbers to stay are XX20-XX30th. Favorable floors 8-12.

Food:
The food was excellent, good selection, somewhat repetitive but it's personal choice. If you are a burger or junk food lover there is a snack bar where you can some your favorites.

Stuff.

Excellent on most parts. Very friendly. We changed the room with no problem in 30 minutes after we got the first room ( the view from balcony was not pretty enough)

Weiters are good.

The ala cartes were good. Book in advance as they go fast. In Mexican ask for Spanish coffee. It's quite a show.

Room cleaning service is a bit on lower side.

Entertainmet.
Nightly. Almost all shows are very good. Recommended to see.
Few times a week there is disco club open till 1 am.

Bars.
11am-1am
Open everywhere where the show is. Drink selection is good enough but do not expect a huge variety.

Smoking.
Hotel is not designed for smokers. No smoking inside in closed premises. No ashtrays in rooms. But you satill can smaoke in room of course.

Beach.

Very good. Send is clean ( though you may find some sigarett butts there). Gets very hot during the day.

Water is amazing. Warm and with very low waves. Good for all ages. The nature of the bay is very beautiful.

Sun is coming to the beach around 9am. If you want a cabano on the beach come earlier.

Location.

The hotel is quite far from the city. It's 15 min.walk to main road where you can go shopping or go to ther destinations. Though you can always take taxi from hotel or local bus.

Manzanillo is very friendly a safe city.

We liked Tesoro. Good value for money. If we decide to go on the budget vacation Tesoro is the one we would go to again.

I put a short video about Tesoro so you can get a general idea of what to expect:

We just got back from a wonderfull week. The staff were friendly and profesional. The food was fabulous you didn't need Ala carte the buffet was different everyday. The sports and entertainment staff worked their butts off to make sure you had a good time. we paid for a 3 and half star but got 5 star food and service. They set up Televisions and opened up the bar so we could watch Canada win Gold In Hockey and were just as excited as we were. What more could you ask for. I just don't get the bad reviews maybe these people wouldn't be happy no matter what I saw a few of those people there. Great time I will be recommending this resort to all my friends. Can't wait to go back.

We were a little nervous about staying at Tesoro due to previous reviews that we had read on TripAdvisor. I learned from this trip that I will always read reviews, but I will save judgement until AFTER my own experiences. There were 6 of us that went. (Ages 23-25) When our flight landed we were greated with a large air conditioned bus and $1.00 Coronas. The bus ride from the Airport to the Resort wasn't long, and the views along the way and the beers kept us entertained. Check in went very fast... under 10 minutes. We got the rooms and beds we requested. Our swipe card for our room worked fine. We had a king sized bed, large bathroom. AMAZING view from the 3rd floor. Very clean. Smelled fresh. The fridge was stocked with water, pop and beer. (daily) The pool was beautiful. Everyday we had no trouble finding a chair to tan on. You are given a towel card when you check in and they give you HUGE blue towels everyday... if it gets wet or damp you can change it in whenever you want for a fresh towel. Our room was cleaned daily, and it was noticeable. I slept well on the bed, the shower was great.. alot of pressure. The staff was very nice, and service was wonderful. The Mexican and Itallian a'la carte wasn't anything amazing. It featured alot of the same foods we would have seen throughout the week at the buffet. We went into town a few days -- There is a Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Burger King etc all within 4.00 (USD) cab fare. We ate a few lunches in town at local mexican restaurants and it was delicious. (AND CHEAP!) One night we went out for dinner in town.... 6 of us had a full course dinner (incl. smoked salmon, beef carpaccio, clams, steak, sea bass, stuffed ravioli, spanish coffee, creme brulee, cream puffs) all for under roughly 30.00 each (USD) .. The restaurant was beautiful, right on the ocean and we could see downtown manzanillo across the shore. There were several activities that the resort offered. (Incl. Sunset cruise, party boat, deep sea fishing, snorkeling, horse back riding, ATV tours. etc) The bars on the resort closed at 1am.... which we didn't like. But the entertainment staff did offer a toured night out on the town... and local cabs take you into town and are all eager to share information about good places to eat and drink. Saturday there is a market in town and there is ALOT of stuff to look at and buy. The buffet at the resort was good. The location is beautiful, right on the ocean. There was always fresh fruit available and fresh soups every lunch. Amazing guacomole and salsa. Room service was great... amazing chicken fajitas and they have great french fries and burgers.
So now some "bad" things:
As a group of younger people we weren't impresssed with the amount of children that were at the resort. The week we went was the Mexican Mardi Gras and Lent... so there were alot of mexicans on the resort and they have large families. Once they left the resort was calm and quiet. so next time I don;t think we would go during that week.
There is alot to say about this trip.... It isn't as bad as some of the reviews I've read. If you pay for the Holiday Inn then you should expect the holiday Inn... not the Hilton. Overall we had a great time, lots of laughs and I'm sure we will do it again :)

My boyfriend and I just returned from Tesoro Manzanillo, being there from feb10-17th. I was a little worried after reading some bad reviews, but those people must have been crazy because Tesoro was awesome!!!! Its no 5 star, but everything is clean, staff is nice, beach is awesome, and food was great. The hotel was built in 1984 so of course the buildings are a little worn down, but it was still nice. We had a nice room on the 3rd floor, not in the huge building, that had a king size bed, mini fridge stocked with beer, pop, and water, bathroom, and balcony facing the beach. We rarely spent time in the room because the weather was awesome, but it was a nice place to go for some cool air conditioning!
All the food was pretty good. There are two a la carte restaurants, Mexican and Italian, that you hace to book reservations for the day of, and they are open alternating days. We only tried the Mexican and it was awesome! We went there twice, the ribs were delicious, as well as the espresso chocolate mousse was to die for as a dessert! You can also get Spanish Coffee where the server will do a cool kind of show lighting it on fire and stuff.
The Buffet was quite good, and open almost all the time- 7-11 am, 1-4 (i think) and then 7-11 pm. Breakfast had an array of fruit, cereal, youghurt, pancakes, an omelette station, scrambled eggs, refried beans, tortillas, really good hashbrowns, it was all pretty good. Lunch items varied but there was always alot of different meats and stews, steamed veggies, spaghetti, stuff to make sandwiches, etc, and dessert. Sometimes the dinner buffet was similair to the lunch one, but they also added things in like a fajita and burrito station, make your own pasta night, sushi, etc which was pretty good. We always went for dinner around7-7:30 and there was no line up, but after 8:30 ish there always was a line for the food! Haha.
There is also a snack bar that is open 12-5, where you can get burgers, hot dogs, fries, etc, and there is also a bar in there. It was good for a drunken afternoon snack!
All the bars had awesome drinks! You could get pretty much anything, lots of nice blended drinks, and highballs, beer (sol light and dark), margaritas and such. The pool bar was rarely very busy and was open all afternoon, then you could either go to the lobby bar, and also you would get served in the restaurants and buffet which was a nice touch.
All the servers and bartenders were really nice, as well as the bellboys and reception staff. Right when we arrived at Tesoro we couldnt get the safe to work, but reception actually called us to make sure we were settled in ok, and they sent someone right away to fix it.
The beach was nice, a bit wavy at times which was alright, and the sand gets HOT HOT HOT! So be careful. Theres also people walking around the beach trying to sell you stuff, which got a bit annoying, but you can avoid them by lying by the pool instead. We never had a problem finding beach chairs at the beach or at the pool.
There was also lots of activities, like water aerobics and cooking and drink making classes at the ppol during the day, as well as a nightly show. We`re not really into that sort of thing but lots of people seemed to enjoy it. The kids area also looked pretty sweet with waterslides and their own pool. There is also a tennis court and ping pong table area, as well as a workout place (never went there, we were on vacation!!)
As for out of resort activities- there were tonnes. We booked with Transat tours so we were able to meet with a very nice rep who booked everything for us. We went on a snorkel tour- $35 each, which was worth it!!! The crazy thong man (if you go you`ll know who im talking about) was awesome and was the tour guide. We got on a boat and went to a few other resorts to pick up more people. Equipment was provided. The boat had music, and it was cool to see all the houses on the peninsula (Apparently Oprah has a house there!) We stopped at 3 snorkel spots, 2 just in bays that were nice, and one at a sunken ship which was really neat (but kind of scary if you are scared of sharks like I am haha). The crazy thong man also dove down and found a blow fish and different star fish to take pictures with which was cool. They also gave us beer and tequila on the boat, which was awesome! The tour lasted about 5 hours, but went by fast and was well worth it.
The other tour we went on was to the Tortuga Sea Turtle conservation place. ($45 each I think). Again we were picked up on a bus and stopped at different resorts, and we got to see alot of Mexico as it was about an hour drive to the turtle place. There they had iguanas, where the tour guide would take one out so you could get a pic, and many different sea turtles. The coolest part was releasing baby sea turtles! The staff there watch when the momma turtles lay their eggs, then they take the eggs to a safe spot as many eggs will nmot survive otherwise. Luckily one set hatched that morning, so everyone on our bus got to release a really cute little sea turtle into the ocean. Here we also went on a little boat tour throgh a swamp type place which was cool, but there were lots of mosquitos.
Other tours included deep sea fishing ($300 so we didnt do it), horseback riding, seadooing, etc.
One little tip is to take a taxi to walmart to buy your booze and souvenirs to take home" Everything was superrrr cheap!! It was only a 40-50 peso ride there, which is only a few bucks.
Overall everything was very nice and we had an awesome time. It might be an idea to bring snacks on the plane as they dont give you much, and if you have a stop over its quite a long flight to Manzanillo.
I would definetly reccommend this place, I know we already miss it!

We stayed there from Jan 18 to Feb. 01/10 in a master bedroom oceanview. The checkin was quick (after a long delay at the airport) and a bellman took us and our luggage to our room quickly. We had emailed a request for a room in the low rise part of the resort on the 3rd or 4th floor with a good view from our balcony and they had emailed us back confirming it. The bedroom had a king bed with a good new mattress and box spring on it and an dresser with a television and a mini frig (which was stocked each day with 3 bottle of water, 2 pop, and 2 beer), 2 armchairs, a table with a mirror over it , a picture
on the wall, and a balcony. The living room had a table and 4 chairs, a couch, a stand with another television and more dresser drawers, and a ice bucket and glasses, and a table lamp and another balcony. The only things that was lacking was a coffee table, a picture to dress up the wall plus the furniture on the balconies was poor - not comfortable at all. There also was a walkin closet with lots of shelves and the safe.
The suite was spotless and was kept that way the whole time we were there. The bathroom was not elaborate but was clean, lots of nice towels, shampoo, and lotion put in daily.
When we came back from dinner the first night they had left a plate with a huge palm leaf with apples, pears and grapes - a real nice touch!
They have a buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (closed for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights), a cantina for hot dogs, hamburgers, etc from 11 to 5 each day, a dinner buffet with a show every night either on the R floor or the beach, they have a bar in the cantina, a pool/swim up bar by the huge pool, and a lobby bar open 530 to 1 am (they need more comfortable furniture in the lobby bar), an Italian restaurant every other night and a Mexican restaurant the alternate nights. You need to make reservations for them but never had a problem getting one. They do want men to wear long pants in the Mexican restaurant but will let you in with long dress shorts if you don't have long pants on.Most of the beach is used by the resort but on either side of it is an area the local people use. All in all a great beach. The bay has lots of little boats, a few small tour boats, a place to rent sea doos, kayaks, banana boat rides, etc. The resort has stores on the lower level and the lobby level with nice stuff, and nice staff. The manager is always around and is very helpful. We have stayed at the Karmina Palace previously
and my husband and I preferred this resort. The only thing we found annoying was the last Sunday there was so many day passes sold that there was a long lineup for breakfast. They could easily solve that by opening the cantina up for breakfast also.
Overall, we found the resort a great deal, and the staff got to know you and caterred toyou. We would go again to this resort

I agree with all the good reviews. Great place for kids.
We didn't get beer in our fridge. Boo Hoo! But I guess we would have got some if we asked because they gave us extra water. We only drank wine anyhow.
I wonder what difference that new big apartment building will do to the sun on the beach in 2011? Will it block out the morning sun?
Our all-inclusive package from Canada was very good value.
The charter flight alone YVR to Mexico was cheaper than going Air Alaska
