“Just came back, will not return!”
Reviewed 2 July 2012

Let me start by saying that the property is beautiful; but the rooms and the service at the front desk from the supervisor will make your vacation a series of headaches. To begin with, they couldn't find our reservation, we waited about 20 minutes before they realized it was there all along. We were there with family from CA and from Mexico City- total of 6 rooms. My family from Mexico City had to pay extra for arriving too early and having to cover breakfast. When they left, they were asked for the bracelets (giving you access to food/activities) at 12:00 p.m.- their plane didn't leave until 6:00 p.m.- the supervisor wouldn't even allow them to drink water! My 16 year old niece was saying good-bye to the rest of the family staying behind and two security officers went to the beach to find her!

Of the 6 rooms; 4 leaked from the roof (had to place two towels on the floor daily, there were bugs (not bed bugs) in 3 of the 6 rooms- to the point that my sister asked to be moved. We asked for non-smoking rooms- my other sister had to move the day after arriving due to the smell. The phone didn't work in one room, the TV didn't work in the other- AND we payed extra for "premium service"! They also ran out of food on two days in which large groups of kids (middle school kids) arrived!

We would have still had a decent time if it wasn't for the rude service of the front desk manager who treated all of us in the most unprofessional manner. If you haven't booked- don't go to Karmina- by the way- the beach sucked. We have been to every beach resort in Mexico- this is the first time I take the time to write a review- it should indicate how bad our experience with this hotel was.

Room Tip: Check for bugs before you unpack

My family and I just returned from a little known resort town in Mexico called Manzanillo. Not many Americans are going there yet because it hasn't really built up like some of the more widely traveled resort areas in Mexico. We chose the resort because it offered large family suites, activities, kids club with an all inclusive package. although we traveled in the rainy season, we enjoyed the resort. The rooms were large, well equipped with great comfortable beds with a pillow menu. We did purchase the premium club experience which allowed us some of these features along with free Internet/computers in the private club area. Overall food was good although several nights some of the restaurants did not open because of rain. The emplyees were good overall, but expected tips even though it was included. Some of them did not provide
good service after we didn't tip in the first few days. We discussed this with the assistant
manager who talked to his staff and that did improve. The resort was clean, staff spoke English
well enough and the activities were fun despite the rain. One night, the disco music was way too
loud and disrupted sleep but overall we enjoyed our trip and didn't leave the premise accept for
an ATV trip which was excellent and safe. I would recommend this resort for families with teens.

teens. Pretty beach, great pool area.

Room Tip: Look online to view the rooms to choose the one that best fits your family.

We recently spent a couple of nights at the Barcelo Karmina Palace Deluxe. We have been there several times over the last few years, generally a few nights at a time. As always the service was very nice, the food at the buffet was decent, the grounds and room extremely clean and pretty. Our only complaint was that being low-season not all of the restaurants were open, so waiting in line in the morning to make a reservation was somewhat irritating. In fact, the first night we were there we weren't able to get into any restaurant due to it being filled up within 20 minutes of taking reservations (10 am). We did enjoy the Japanese restaurant immensely! But would have loved to enjoyed the romantic atmosphere and fantastic food at the Mexican restaurant in the palapa on the ocean ~ hopefully next time!!

My wife and I got married at the Barceleo Karmina Palace on January 28th, 2012. There were approx 50 of us in our group ranging from kids up to our parents.

The resort: The resort is gorgeous and very well maintained. It has 3 a la carte restaurants; Mexican, Italian, and Japanese, as well as the buffett. We found the food to be very good in all of the restaurants and greatly enjoyed it over our two week stay.

Pools/Beach: The beach is on the smaller side and in a cove. We've been to both coasts of Mexico, and the water is definately more 'pretty' on the Gulf Coast than the Pacific, but we all enjoyed it. There are somewhere aroudn 6 pools throughout the resort, all interconnected along with a water slide for the children...adults are not allowed to go on it...though we still snuck down, and proceeded to get chased away by security. LOL There is also a "hot tub", however it wasn't too hot.

Service: we had amazing service the entire time, whether it be at one of the bars or restaurants, the staff definately work for their tips. PS...order a Spanish Coffee, and enjoy the show!

Night Life: They have nightly shows that run from 9-10pm. The disco then opens at 11am. The first hour of the disco is live music, followed by a DJ. We had friends come with us to the wedding, and they partied every night...they enjoyed the disco.

Rooms: As the Bride and Groom we had our room upgraded to the Master Suite with Pool. This room had a kitchenette (fridge, sink, counter), dinning area, living room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and 3 balconies, with a pool! The room was amazing, we will likely never stay in a room this nice again. The only downside (complaint) i have regarding the entire hotel is the maid service (staff who clean your room every day). We found things did not get refreshed, ie face clothes, towels, soap, etc. We needed to ask the front desk daily for these. The good thing...they stock your fridge with 2 beer. If you leave an empty beer with a note beside it, with how many you would like, they will fulfull your wish (up to 6 beer at a time).

We also had our wrist bands upgrade to Platinum, which meant, unlimited dinenrs at a la carte's, free room service, and access to the Platinum lounge (Free food, drinks, and internet)...you could also receive premium liquor or wine for free.

Wedding: Our wedding was amazing, we had an amazing dinner (reception), amazing ceremony, and the pictures from Jehova turned out fantastic. If you have any questions regarding weddings, feel free to contact me.

PS...take the sunset cruise...it's an amazing time, and some great views.

I just got back from Barcelo Karmina Palace Deluxe from a trip with my family (7 adults, ages 24-61). It was a wonderful week and a very relaxing time, which was the goal of our trip, bringing together family from across the USA for an all-inclusive week in Mexico.

The pluses:
>The property itself
>The room
>The Club Premiere!
>The Shows
>The pools

Details: The resort is absolutely beautiful and wonderfully maintained! Clearly, they were no where near capacity (to the extent of closing some amenities...see below), but the grounds, gardens, pools were exceptional. You'll read a number of reviews complaining about the beach, which are all true. However the ocean views are excellent from the pool, and you have the upside of not getting sand everywhere.

We booked two master suite rooms for the 7 people, and the rooms were great (I'll go 4 star quality, not perfect, but very good). Huge space, two bedrooms, a living room with flat panel tv, two balconies with spectacular resort and ocean views. Very nice bathrooms, marble flooring throughout, and a decent bed. One slight issue, family was pretty much English only with my wife and I speaking a little spanish, and only about 10 channels in English. The rooms were on the 6th and 7th floors (7001 and 6001), and were very convenient to the lobby, with great views from both, but better from the 7th (top) floor. Maid service was acceptable but not great, room kept clean and towels changed daily, as in the humidity, nothing dries! Air condition was on full the entire time, but even still, needed to use the ceiling fans. The group was very happy with the rooms though.

With these two rooms came the "Club Premium" distinction, which is available with other rooms as well at a cost. For the Club Premium, we received gold wrist bands entitling us to premium liquor options (still had to specify to not get the standard), a special concierge and help with dinner reservations, and most importantly the Club Premium lounge. This room became our little home away during the week, and constantly had a couple hot food options and a variety of cold items and desserts, along with a premium liquor selection, wines, beer (only Sol), tea, coffee and soft drinks. The hot food items were consistently much better than other food at the resort. One day was "sushi" day, and there was a great selection of sashimi and nigiri available. This feature definitely made (some might say saved) the trip. I can't recommend this upgrade enough, particularly relative to the rest of the food at the resort.

Evening entertainment was quite decent, and most nights split between English and Spanish. It was no where near Broadway quality, but the same dancers, singers, and band did a different hour show ever night, which was quite impressive. Definitely worth checking out to see if it's your thing.

The pools were immaculate and plentiful, so our group had no problem finding a variety of great spots to relax. The staff was constantly making sure all the leaves and other things were out of the pools, bar service was reasonable in the pool, and a nice division of kids areas, family areas, and adults only areas works well.

The minuses:
>Language barrier if not fluent in Spanish
>The food, particularly the buffet
>The elimination of activities & restaurants due to lack of guests

Details on the minuses: Apparently end of May/June is not a busy time for US travel to Mexico (or at least this resort). If that's what you're looking for, here is great for you, as my family was pretty much the only group speaking English at the entire resort. Some of the staff was bilingual, but there were a number of occasions where there were significant language barriers. I did what I could with my Span-glish, but there were some instances. The staff is generally very polite and willing to work with you.
The bigger minus was the food. While we didn't expect exceptional food, the quality was really quite disappointing. With a fairly empty resort during the week, they only had a single of their a la carte restaurants open every night, and the line formed rather quickly to get a reservation. While we were only stuck twice without a spot a the restaurants (had to go to the buffet), it was still quite annoying. The buffet was not up to 4 star (or probably even 3 star) standards, and agree on the breakfast that the bacon and hash browns were near inedible. There were a number of other options that were fine, and the fruit was great. As indicated above, the Club Premium lounge was where we ended up for breakfast most days and were quite pleased. The buffet, big disappointment.
For the a la carte restaurants, the food quality was better, but still some disappointing elements. The Italian restaurant was reasonable, some decent entrees but still around the Olive Garden caliber of food (not four star). The Japanese restaurant was probably the overall best food, but worst location. Decent sushi (middle of the road quality for where I live SF Bay area, but decent), and some other good options, quality miso, pretty good noodle entrees. The location was next to the buffet restaurant, with no view, and a noisy atmosphere. The Mexican restaurant was also decent, but not spectacular. Reasonable food, but AMAZING view. With the resort almost empty, we definitely got one of the best tables in the place out over the Pacific Ocean. Took our time, decent food and just enjoyed the views and the margaritas.

Lastly, as mentioned earlier, the resort was no where near capacity. As such, each morning we would need to find out which restaurants would be open that evening and make a reservation quickly. For all except the last night, only a single a la carte restaurant was available, and for the most part, only the buffet was available for breakfast and lunch (aside from the snack bar by the beach). Also, the resort has a large board of activities available by days of the week, and it seemed like every time we tried to go to one, that was cancelled for the day (e.g. no yoga, aqua aerobics, sporting events). The lack of activities was offset by the bonus that we could sit in our choice of chairs, and there were practically no lines for any bars, restaurants, etc, and we got the same table every night for the show.

All in all, it was a very good trip. We enjoyed ourselves, and the minuses didn't cost us a relaxing vacation. It's not above 4 stars, but going in expecting a beautiful resort, a nice room, and okay food, you won't be disappointed in the value.

Safe travels!

Room Tip: Club premium rooms on the upper floors would be best

Jo and I stayed here for a relaxing all inclusive break before we return home to the UK to get married. We arrived and were quickly shown to our very nice suite. We looked out of the window and noticed the resort was busy, but there was plenty of space on the beach, although the pool had very few beds left.

When we checked in we were told we still had time to take advantage of lunch so we headed to one of the restaurants on site, and to be honest the food was just OK, but as lunch is all inclusive buffet style, it was OK.

Heres the but. As we left lunch we tried to book one fo the restaurants for the evening. First we were told all restaurants were full therefore we would have to book for later in the week. As we were only there for one evening, this was not possible. Then we asked if there was space in any of the restaurants and we learned there should be in the buffet but we may have to queue. I found it strange that we had no option to attend the proper restaurants as guest only staying for one night and I learned it was first come first served, and that they had been fully booked before we arrived. Mr Garia told us we should have booked in advance and also that as we were staying one day we were not entitled to use the bookable restaurants. Also that even though we had been encouraged at check in to have lunch that we were not supposed to use that service.

I did ask to speak to the duty manager, as the restuarants do look great and as our stay was for just one evening and as a special treat was there anything we could do to attend later in the evening or pay extra. I have to say the manager, Rafael Marquez Garcia, was the rudest manager I have ever met in a hotel. To be honest he was rude, raised his voice, told lies and blamed the fact the hotel was busy(even his own staff told me he was saying things that weren't true) and he made me feel as if he was about to ask me to leave the hotel. This matter was worsened by the fact that I am a vegartian. He told me that was my chosing and that he had veggie options in the restaurants that I could not get a table in. He then explained that if I went and waited in my room he would arrange for some one to come to offer me a veggie option in my room. But his staff told him that the veggie menu he promised did not exist. We ended up back at the buffet and waiting for a table for some time. Then the food in general was typical low end all inclusive, and the veggie option was chips, veg or a salad that had seen better days. This really did put the dampers on the Saturday and when we tried to get a drink at the bar later that evening we were served in cheap plastic throw away cups.

Sunday was a different matter. The hotel was in general less busy, the food was fresh and drinks served in quality plastic cups. The resort has a prime location and we even watched the fish and large lizards as we wandered around.

I have stayed in many hotels around the world many top class and many that are average. This one is a nice hotel with great location, friendly staff and is clean. The food and drinks are below average and never have I had a member of staff or management be so rude. There are other hotels locally that offer better value and if you travel up the cost for an hour there are many that are better and cheaper.

Mr Garcia, as discussed I wanted to give you every opportunity to make our stay welcome and your actions and lack of them after we met mean I am writing this feedback so that others are aware.
